Definitely the wrong thing to do. Just buy a used one if you're worried about spending money on something you might replace later.

Fix the wires you cut with proper connectors and then try it. At least you will eliminate that thought. Then worry about the free mod when you fix the problem.

Remove all plugs. Inspect for fouling, etc. Pour a few ounces of gas in each cylinder and install plugs. If it still doesn't start, you have no spark.
