ok i went through this exact same thing with my 93 laser 1.8. When i got the car running it would overcool, so i took off the thermostat housing and found NO THERMOSAT AT ALL!!! I put one in, and the car started to "overheat" but it actualy wasnt overheating, the sensor would go all the way...
to awnser the big question, yes, and oil leak can cause your clutch to slip, but in this case i dont think so, the rear main seal going can cause your clutch to slip. check it out, its a b---h to check but if u feel like pullin your trany try the rear main seal. hope that helps,
i had the same problem with my 1.8 laser i would set the timing marks up exactly and then it would be off, you really need to check the balance shaft cuz thats what was throwing mine off, does the car run? if not then its probably the balance shaft. check the balance shaft timing and try again...
