There was no industry standard for OBD1 so there are many different connectors and data outputs between manufacturers. Therefore no store or shop will likely be able to help.Every 1g DSM owner needs to learn to pull the codes themselves. It's like a rite of passage.

Of course your ecu will store CEL codes, but there was no industry standard for OBD1 which is why you can't just buy a scanner in a parts store. As a DSM'er you need to learn to pull codes yourself.

24 year old bulbs may be the problem, they do get dimmer with age. All the 1g's I've owned have always had the dimmer switch at max and have never been very bright. If you pull the dash, replace every bulb and post a picture of the difference. Some of us could use the inspiration to do the same...

Yes, the sensor for the fan switch is right beside the lower hose connection. There is something there in your pic but I can't make out what it is. You should have a dangling wire somewhere close that plugs into the sensor.

Disconecting the battery will reset the TCU error codes but it will not solve the problems that created the error in the first place.The TCU for your Turbo is different than the TCU for your non-Turbo. They are not interchangable.

MD750093 is the TCU used from mid 90 to mid 92 for FWD turbos. It is the one in my car. MD750092 is the TCU used during the same time period for AWD turbos.

Stuck in 3rd gear is Limp Mode. To reset a TCU and clear the error codes all you have to do is remove the negative battery terminal.

If you are not getting any reading from the TCU then it is probably dead. The tranny will also be in Limp Mode. If the tranny is shifting fine then you are connecting to the wrong pins or you have not turned the ignition on (I usually forget to do this first also).
