  1. 1g auto seat belt upgrade

It's not that the Canadian seat belts failed to pass the US crash standards. The requirement at the time was that cars had to have either an air bag or other automatic restraint system. Canada didn't update that law until a few years later. However, I would advise everyone to try a 2g belt...
  2. Automatic TSi Power/Economy Button

Nothing wrong with bumping an old thread if you are on topic.Guitarkid, my advice is to keep it on Economy and switch to Power when you want to. Sometimes I'll leave it on Power for extended periods but usually will switch it to Power only for the brief periods when I floor it, then it goes...
  3. Are all 4g63 dipsticks the same?

They have diferent part numbers but are actually the same lenght and are interchangable.
  4. Who makes OEM?

I work for an OEM manufacturer of engine components thats supplys just about every car/truck/bus/tractor Brand Name you can think of. We make parts for Service that used to be made by other companies that have gone out of business since those vehicles were originally made. We do not sell parts...
  5. 1G DSM Platform, Still Going Strong?

1g's are still great and parts have not proven to be a problem yet. I thought my 2g GSX was the most comfortable DSM to drive but it lacked the thrill of the 1g. Must be the extra weight. The real problem with 2g's is that they rust out quicker, at least that is my experience. If you got to go...
  6. Best brake upgrade options for stock 16" wheels

If you use 2G dual piston calipers you'll need special brake lines to make it work. Instead just get the dual pistons from 93 and 94 AWD models. Direct bolt on.
  7. Seafoam suggestions?

+1When this Seafoam craze started a number of years ago, I read the accounts and watched the videos of Talons spewing smoke when using the stuff. Since I live in the downtown core of a large city and didn't want to attract attention I drove up north to a side road to use my can of Seafoam in...
  8. Toronto AREA DSM

Hello dkalfop. Keep in mind that Tuners is an international site so ca.dsm.org can't compete on shear volume of information, it is just a regional site after all. When you make use of both sites then you should get all the information and contacts you would need. And the thing about the Canadian...
  9. need body work help!

You're not the first DSMer that this has happened to. My roof was dented with a crease, some people get lucky with just a smashed windshield. I replaced the hood and windshield cheaply enough but didn't touch the roof. A couple of years later the roof was the reason the car was the only one...
  10. Tempramental 91 Talon TSI AUTOMATIC

There was no industry standard for OBD1 so there are many different connectors and data outputs between manufacturers. Therefore no store or shop will likely be able to help.Every 1g DSM owner needs to learn to pull the codes themselves. It's like a rite of passage.

  12. Stalling / misfire after UICP

Of course your ecu will store CEL codes, but there was no industry standard for OBD1 which is why you can't just buy a scanner in a parts store. As a DSM'er you need to learn to pull codes yourself.
  13. Dash lights are dim

24 year old bulbs may be the problem, they do get dimmer with age. All the 1g's I've owned have always had the dimmer switch at max and have never been very bright. If you pull the dash, replace every bulb and post a picture of the difference. Some of us could use the inspiration to do the same...
  14. 1G TCU help

It will not work correctly, if at all. I tried it once and it only worked for about 5 minutes before going back into limp mode.
  15. Rear Axles

1G Axles don't have the same issue of seizing in the hub like 2G axles. Don't think there are any issues finding decent 1G axles.XSeasonx, go ahead and try JNZ but I'd be surprised if they had any. Your best bet is probably DSM Graveyard.
  16. Rear Axles

Miller Imports would be the first place to try, but there is a pair on that TMZ link as well.2G rear AWD axles have been discontinued for years. The only places you'll find new aftermarket axles are the Driveshaft Shop which will cost an arm and a leg, and DSM Graveyard.
  17. Cheap Insurance in Ontario?

If your mom lives outside of the city then use that as your home address but keep the policy in your name. You are much safer doing this than putting the car under her name. Did this for 4 years while living downtown and saved a bunch of money until the rates were reasonable enough to change my...
  18. Cheap Insurance in Ontario?

Your name should have been on your parents insurance so you should have a couple of years as an insured driver. Number of years continuously insured is what matters. You could have had your license for 20 years but if you buy your 1st car at age 46 you'll still be paying the first time driver...
  19. General OEM EPROM chip

Yes, a non-eprom and an eprom ECU are functionally the same. Just get an ECU with the same part number. Assuming your car is a Federal M/T 6 bolt you need MD166262, if it is a 7 bolt you need MD193299.
  20. Is this the right radiator?

Yes, the sensor for the fan switch is right beside the lower hose connection. There is something there in your pic but I can't make out what it is. You should have a dangling wire somewhere close that plugs into the sensor.
  21. no coolant?

If you are not blowing white smoke out the exhaust, then it is probably just a leak. Fill it up, go for a short drive to fully warm up the car and then stop and look in and under the engine bay for leaks. try to trace all the hoses and take a good look at the rad.
  22. 2g seat belts in a 1gb

This is excellent news!I can tell you that the Canadian seat belts ARE NOT the way to go, they are crap. Have owned 5 Canadian 1Gs and only 2 of them had decently working belts, and even they weren't that great. The coils inside the retractors wear out and the belts do not return to the...
  23. Should i keep my overdrive switch on or off?

:banghead:This is one of those ridiculous questions that keep coming up all the time. The overdrive is just the fourth gear and you wouldn't tell the MT guys not to use their 5th. OD is NOT some special function that kicks in at anytime like a turbo. An auto tranny is designed to to do...
  24. where to get tcu rebuilt?

The problem is that there are so few TCU's coming up for sale anymore that rebuilding may be the only option. By all means keep looking for something in the classified section as a spare but if you need it ASAP, you'll need to send it to a rebuilder. These guys do repairs for about $200 Ford...
  25. Auto trans issue

You mean you pulled the codes from your TCU or you "Pulled" the TCU? Seems pretty straight forward that the tranny is in limp mode which sticks it in 3rd. Pull the codes from the TCU to find out what the problem is. If there is no response from the TCU it is dead, if it functions and there are...
  26. 2G rear hatch struts

I just got the Monroe struts from Rock Auto but they don't match my old ones! My old struts had a bracket attached at the end of the lower rod but the Monroe's do not. How are these supposed to work?
  27. What happened to ca.dsm.org ???

Mike, it never left, it is the dsm.org main server that crashed. Edit your host file as above and you come back home, ca.dsm.org is indeed up and running.
  28. Replacing Hood Latch Cable

I have a new cable ready to go to replace the busted hood latch cable on my 97 GSX, but I can't trace the path of the original. Couldn't find a single mention of this when I did a search either.Has anyone ever replaced this cable and have some advice? Thanks
  29. How to Remove Washer Nozzles?

I'm painting my hood and want to remove the nozzles for the window washers. Are there any tricks to getting them off?
  30. Brake Fluid in My Power Steering Fluid Reservior, Doh!

Half asleep, I picked up a bottle of brake fluid and dumped a few ounces into my power steering fluid reservior. :coy:I do know that the opposite, P/S fluid in the brake system will ruin it, but I don't see how the brake fluid should do any damage to the P/S system. A flush of the system...
  31. limp mode..now making a funny "howl"

Stuck in 2nd gear is not Limp Mode.If it is stuck in 3rd gear it IS most likely the TCU, as this is LIMP MODE.Although it can never be recommended, it is still possible to drive around in 3rd. Obviously Overdose didn't care about the condition of the tranny so there is no point in...
  32. Different size Wheels; OK?

I found a beautiful set of 4 used rims at a good price. The problem is that one pair are 17x7 +47 and the other pair are 17x8 + 42.Is there any problem with using different sizes with a FWD? I figure the 8 inch wheels could go on the front of the car with larger tires.Am I wrong?
  33. 92 Laser Fwd 2.0 Dohc Help

You have an automatic non-turbo and want to be involved in the "racing and the high performance scene"?Of course you can do a tranny swap and install a turbo but the easiest and cheapest upgrade you can do is just buy a manual, turbo DSM. Once you have a turbo model it will only take a...
  34. Cleaning Stock 92 Laser Rims

I tried using Meguiar's Hot Rims spray on, spray off cleaner on my stock Laser rims. You know, the mesh style ones. Well, not much of the years of caked on brake dust came off. So try again and use a brush. A little more came off, but all the elbow grease I applied couldn't get these wheels...
  35. Best Tranny Fluid, A/T

  36. Looking for a good book on Body Work

I already screwed up just following the instruction of the Touch-Up paint kit. :coy: That is when it became clear to me that reading a good book first was necessary. The hood of the car has so many stone chips after 210,000 KMs that it will have to be done professionally. So it makes the...
  37. Looking for a good book on Body Work

I'm looking for a book about auto body work. My car has stone chips on the hood, a couple of deep scratches and rust around a wheel well. These jobs should be fairly easy to fix myself but I have zero experience or knowledge of paint/body repair. Anyone have suggestions for an easily understood...
  38. 1G TCU Question

Disconecting the battery will reset the TCU error codes but it will not solve the problems that created the error in the first place. The TCU for your Turbo is different than the TCU for your non-Turbo. They are not interchangable.
  39. 1G need some TCU info

MD750093 is the TCU used from mid 90 to mid 92 for FWD turbos. It is the one in my car. MD750092 is the TCU used during the same time period for AWD turbos.
  40. How do i reset the failsafe code in my 91 TSi awd A/t?

Your problem then is a lot bigger than just the dirty fuild.First thing you need to do is check what codes the TCU is giving or if the TCU is bad. Follow the link below for instructions. Note: if you get no reading at all the TCU is fried.http://www.plymouthlaser.com/tcucodes.htm
  41. Post your experiences with Emissions laws in your province (Canadian Emissions)

Let's clarify this. There is a lot of talk from people who want to scrap the program but they are not part of the government and there are no plans to get rid of it. Don't expect it to disappear until we are all driving hydrogen powered vehicles with water being the only exhaust product.Some...
  42. Car locks into 3rd gear

The ECU controls the engine. The TCU controls the transmission. The tranny will not go into limp mode because of a problem with the ECU.Any time your car goes into limp mode the error code will be stored in the TCU until the battery cables are disconnected, turning the ignition off will not...
  43. Car locks into 3rd gear

First thing to do is check the error codes in the TCU:http://www.plymouthlaser.com/tcucodes.htm
  44. How do i reset the failsafe code in my 91 TSi awd A/t?

Stuck in 3rd gear is Limp Mode. To reset a TCU and clear the error codes all you have to do is remove the negative battery terminal.
  45. tranny problems

    Isn't it the Johnson Rod?
  46. 1G How to check and see if tcu is dead?

If you are not getting any reading from the TCU then it is probably dead. The tranny will also be in Limp Mode. If the tranny is shifting fine then you are connecting to the wrong pins or you have not turned the ignition on (I usually forget to do this first also).
