2 weeks ago I took my car in to the shop because the idle was dropping and almost stalling out. turns out my intake manifold gasket was leaking badly and I had an exhaust leak too. they also changed the oil, but that doesn't really matter. as soon as I got the car back I noticed that the idle...
well said. and my point was, hypothetically, he turns off his car, tries to restart it, it doesnt start, he loses control of the car and hits someone or something. Thats pretty smart and personally not worth it for something you cant even see from the drivers seat(ie shooting flames). drive your...
dont wanna sound like a prude, but, you're doing this on city streets with other drivers around you? how bout the safety issues. take the jackass stuff off the road so your fun doesnt ruin someone elses day, or more importantly, their life.
update: So I go out to my car the other day, at this point it has been sitting for 4 months and has not been touched in that time. I had preciously pulled the starter relay cause I was gonna get it tested but never did. So I grab my keys and the relay, put the relay back in its place and try to...
thanks Zenja, sounds like you actually read the title of my topic :thumb:
that sounds good. as soon as I have a day off Im gonna get back to fixing my car. thanks for the advice
thanks for all the help, but once again it is not the MFI relay. that relay is in the engine compartment attached to the positive terminal of the battery. The relay I am talking about is under the dash just above the inside fuse box. And, NO, my car is NOT cranking. But thanks anyways and...
i realize that but that wasnt my question.thanks for the other stuff though. Im gonna see if the auto parts store can check the relay for me and maybe explain it to me in person
no, it has nothing, directly, to do with the ECM. its under the dash on the drivers side. Its a little black relay that can be removed and it has 4 connectors. I have a reapir manual that says you can check the power to the relay but I dont know how.
i had my battery checked today and it was all good. Im trying to check the starter relay but im a noob in terms of electrical stuff so Im not sure how to do it. I removed the relay and tried to check for voltage, but I dont think I did it properly because I couldnt get a reading. How do you...
yeah I have an alarm and its the 2.0L.
Its hard to tell with my car, smell-wise, because it always smells like burning oil, but I didnt smell anything funny before.
Drove my car home from work one night for about 30 minutes. Stopped, turned the car off, then came back 20 minutes later and it wouldn't crank, nothing, just power to the radio, fuel pump, etc. Waited till the next morning and the car cranked over but it did it slightly slower. Got the car home...
yep, brake fluid was low, just topped it up and the light did not come on driving home. I'm going to check on the oil gasket thing. And, i was quoted a price of $450CAD for a new ISC. does that sound right? I also found a place online that sells for like $150US.thanks guys
I have a couple things i need answers to. First, my idle is shit. The car will either drop to 500 and kick back up or stall. Then after driving on the freeway will sit around 1000rpm. I believe it is the ISC but I really dont want to spend the money to replace it. You cant clean it can you...
i think i'm psychic, because I see this thread being closed any minute now. This has got to be the most talked about topic on this site. USE THE SEARCH BUTTON!p.s. pennzoil 10W-30
simple question, which direction do you turn the master cylinder push rod in order to INCREASE the clutch freeplay? my pedal has zero freeplay.
I just had my tranny, clutch (whole kit), master, and slave cylinders changed, but I don't think the mechanic adjusted everything properly. The car...
i've been told that Eibach are better. they last longer and are manufactured better. and make sure you know that you may need a camber kit if you drop too far. And, if you have the money, you should throw some 17's or 18's on there to fill out the gap and improve handling.
are the cables for the 91-94's the same, for NA and Turbo? so are you saying that I should only have one adjustable cable? My Haynes manual says that both should be adjustable, that is why I am asking.
are both of my shifter cables supposed to be adjustable? Only one of my cables has an adjusting nut on it and the other one doesn't. it's a 93 NT 5 speed, obviously.
All of a sudden today, my tranny won't shift into reverse. It just happened for no apparent reason. Anyways, I tried adjusting the clutch pedal and shifter cables but nothing really changes. Just now I tried it again and I got it in with no grinding but it was pretty hard to do. All of my other...
I've been using an undampened crank pulley for over a year and no problems. I also did all the reading about it and I found that it does not make a difference which one you get. I believe I read that all the BMW cars use an undampened pulley as well. I'm not saying our cars are Beemers, but it...
is yours for a 1G or 2G? because there is a difference and I found the one for the 1G wasn't very good and wasn't worth the money for barely any performance gain. I feel the pipe just looks better than the stock rubber one. but that's just my opinion.
don't worry. most likely you can return it. for me it didn't fit onto the throttle body properly. it's cheap because there was obviously no research and design done to it to make sure it was perfect. I suggest you try it out and try to make it work, but I believe that you won't get any...
i would stay away from those intakes. I bought one a few months ago and they do not fit well at all, and I actually sent mine back. it's not worth it. better to spend your money on a custom CAI that actually moves the filter outside of the engine bay. I'm going to make one soon for my car, just...
i believe there is already a huge thread on this topic, I don't have the link but try searching. engine oil is usually personal preference, but the best seem to be Mobil-1 and Royal Purple.
I recommend picking up an aftermarket aluminum crank pulley to replace the stocker. better performance and cheaper. i've had one for almost a year now and no problems.
i've heard the problem with skateboard bearings is that you have to weld them together and that leaves a possibility that they will break. i didn't mind spending the 30 bucks on solid brass bushings, and I've had no problem with them ever since
not sure about the numbers, but I believe you only need to change the intake cam because the exhaust cams are the same for both models. someone correct me if i'm wrong.
you only have to change the intake cam because the exhaust cams on both models are the same. the intake is different though because the turbo model allows more air into the engine. and yes, get one from a 1GB manual tranny car
got mine from speed-source.net and I also got the shifter base bushings. highly recommend both. you will see an improvement in your shifting immediately
update: I just sprayed some throttle body cleaner in there about 20 minutes ago, took the car for a test drive and now it's idleing fine, the throttle isn't sticking and there is a little more power. I'm thinking the throttle plate was sticking and it wasn't allowing any air in or it was letting...

my goal for this build is somewhere between 200-230hp. any suggestions on how to get there? I'm thinking of fully-balanced bottom end with aftermarket pistons, rods, etc., ported head with new valves, springs and cams. Should I go with adjustable cam gears as well or what?basically, what are...
there is a difference between 100K kms and 100K miles, but I am not actually looking to buy one, I was just curious about the prices. That was the highest price I have found. there are other cheaper ones but they have more mileage and they are 95, 96's.my plan is to rebuild the engine and...
I want to, this summer, do an overhaul to my car. I want to rebuild the engine and tranny and get the suspension done. I did some searches but I could not find what I'm looking for, there was a post on here a while back where the guy listed all the parts he was getting for a NA engine build...
the one I found has 108K kms, 1998 stock TSI AWD, 5speed, and it is one of maybe less than ten AWD models I have found, asking 15K cdn, approx. 12K US. is that about average?
