  1. My poor DSM: Almost stolen!

  2. My poor DSM: Almost stolen!

Nope, I had no comprehensive insurance on it as this was my fun car. And the home owners won't cover parts that were attached to the car. I have nothing I can do (except get the free replacement eclipse stereo since it was stolen in less than a year since I owned it.)On the brighter side...
  3. My poor DSM: Almost stolen!

Well, I'm not sure what to do at this point. My DSM which had all kinds of mods and was fast as heck has been broken into. They tried to steal the car, broke the steering lock, but couldn't get it to start due to the alarm's starter kill (talk about idiot car theives). So, instead they stole the...
  4. Where the hell is my oil going?

I would think it's more likely a problem with improper installation of your valve cover gasket than it's going bad. Make sure to scrap off all remains of previous gasket maker and crud on both surfaces. Then add a new gasket and some gasket maker material to help seal, and tighten it in the...
  5. oil leak from exhaust mani stud?

It's hard to know for certain without being there to see it, but it sounds almost certain that the shop drilled to far and yes, it's leaking now. As the others said this is normal, simply plug it with a good sealant compound in your threads that will hold up to HIGH temperatures (1200+).You...
  6. Stock head studs break with 230 hp!!??

That is not a head stud, it's a exhaust manifold stud, and yes, they are known to break very easily on the outside ones. The best advice I've seen on it is to use a die grinder with a carbide drill bit to get into it, then use a extractor... And make sure you don't go all the way threw, you...
  7. 96 Talon TSi Engine build, Please help

I haven't heard good things about the stroker kits for our engines, either get a 2.4l block and adapt it, or just spend the money on forged rods, pistons (8.5:1 is ideal, more requires better gas), ss valves, titanium retainers... But then again that's me...Your knowledge of engines might...
  8. 96 Talon TSi Engine build, Please help

For that amount of money you'll be able to toss in most everything you want... As the other posted suggested look at the parts catalog up at the top of the forum headers... As far as what parts to put in you need to come up with a real world horsepower amount you want to shoot for. Based on that...
  9. Install price???

At most respectable shops you'll pay $60-70 plus tax... If you go to walmart and buy 2 jackstands, and a jack, and do it yourself it might cost you $50... Plus you'll have started buying your own tools at that point which you really need if you are gonna own a dsm! :D
  10. Compression #'s Need Help!

As oldman said, do a wettest and see if it changes. But yea, 14 psi difference is the maximum allowed by the book... So it's bad. You most certainly have a problem be it valve, ring, gasket, etc...
  11. 90 rebuild for 91

Thanks for the input here, that's about what I assumed, just change everything over as I get to it. I'll rebuild this one, then when ready pull the other and swap the parts needed to finish it. I have no clue how much longer my original engine will last, it's got 194k miles and I'm running 16psi...
  12. 90 rebuild for 91

So, it would appear I have began a project to rebuild a 90 complete 6bolt to drop in my 91. What all is different between these years? From what I know so far:The cams are weaker? The CAS has a different connector The Coil Pack plugIs there anything else I should be aware of? I have...
  13. Leak at housing?

Sounds like the 14b turbo's compressor o-ring... It's a huge one, not hard to replace once you pull the turbo, costs $8 from mitsu... Or it's supposed to be the same one on the 2000 ford diesel trucks fuel filter...You need to pull the turbo, and use a massive pair of snap ring pliers to...
  14. Head to Manny Studs are a PITA!!!!

Thanks for your story here, I have 2 or 3 broken studs in mine from the owner before me putting on a 2nd gen manifold. I have done my best to ignore them hoping they'd go away, but alas I'm getting tired of that exhaust leak... I have a die grinder, what drill bit did you use? And what...
  15. need help FAST!!!! (should i get this car)

It's a good price for a 2nd gen I'd think. But automatic, don't buy it!
  16. What to do with my tax return, go faster or look better?

Pay off the card! You can always charge more if you need to, but if you don't put it on the card it'll only get worse over time...
  17. need help with mods(process, general stuff)

Bigger injectors do a few things. Mainly:1) Increase the amount of fuel into the cylinder per pulse, thus decreasing the duty cycle at which they are pulsed. This allows a higher horsepower to be achieved then could with the stock injectors.2) With a S-AFC to tune them (works by tricking...
  18. need help with mods(process, general stuff)

Actually it does, by increasing the fuel into the cylinder per pulse, you became very rich. To fix this you lower the reading the air meter shows the car's ecu. Thus you move the point at which you hit fuel cut to a much higher amount of air.Of course if you use dsmlink this is irrelevant...
  19. need help with mods(process, general stuff)

It sounds like you mostly know what you are doing, yes you need a fpr if you already have a 255hp pump. The 750's I still say are high unless you plan on a 50trim or similar really soon. If you're gonna keep your 14b it's just a waste of money and will frustrate you when tuning dsmlink...
  20. need help with mods(process, general stuff)

I think you're going a little overboard with your plan for the time you are after. If you just follow the stage 1 mods listed at the tech guide pages you'll achieve that time for a lot less work and money. What you were planning would completely max out the 14b and be ready for a new turbo...
  21. Tuning guides?

I hope you understand the mods are not what causes the gain in horsepower, they are supporting mods to up the boost pressure. That's were your gains will come from. They are saying with those mods your car can support 300 horses at the crank in boost pressure, but it varies with altitude etc...
  22. stupid question

The free mods are just that, the free mods (some just low cost). If you dig threw the search engine you'll find them, but it requires some effort.Mainly from what I recall:Air box elimination PVC air intake BCS restrictor removal Fuel Pump Re-wire Intercooler tire wall mod (removal...
  23. Top 5 parts!!!!

Top 5 positives:Boost controller Boost gauge Complete air intake Complete exhaust Re-wire fuel pump or replaceTop 5 negative:As the other guy said, anything that has no performance value (rice). There is always a time and place for these, but not when you want power: Rims...
  24. to buy or not to buy

If you intend to push it beyond it's limits, any car will "blow up". But if you treat it with respect, and take care of it properly it will be fine. The DSM is the best bang for the buck out there. To get you started you might want to read through the forum here, and the www.vfaq.com...
  25. getting new motor

The way I see it, if you want a 6 bolt, do it. If you want a 7 bolt, do it! If you can't decide, get a 4G64 conversion!! Woohoo!Seriously though, the 6 bolt is a wise investment if you'll keep it a long time (or forever). A 7 bolt is fine if you have no intention of keeping it for more than...
  26. How to clean my IC.....

One thing you should do is goto www.vfaq.com and look at the dsm, intake section. You'll find out exactly how to clean this, and do just about anything else you've ever wanted to.
  27. Discussion Question Going On At Shop (Boost)

your limit will be in horsepower and torque, not pressure. So no answer in psi will be accurate.
  28. Shifter bushings?

There are a lot of 1st gen short shifter kits available on eBay for our cars that are a two piece kit. They appear to greatly reduce the throw, I bought one and just got it today... I'll hopefully have some good news tomorrow when I install it! :)Also, in response to the guy who mentioned...
  29. Crashed My Car!!!! Need Help!!

It's hard to give much advise without being there to see the inside and what mechanically happened to it. I'd say pull the bumper, and the fender and clean it up. And take it from there. But then again, did it kill the power steering? Oil Filter? (Is it GSX?) How about the axle, is it bent?
  30. 2g transmission in a 1g

I would think it would be similar to the 6bolt swap into a 2nd gen. You'll need to modify the starter mount, and some bolts. But it should be possible.
  31. Is there such a thing as "port job done wrong?"

So let me try to get this, someone is upset because he didn't understand the the intake needs to be port matched to a ported head???I can see the problem if the runner is scared up, but the other issue is just ignorance of the buyer.
  32. do front/rear strut bars work?

I've found that the front bar is more for looks only, I didn't notice much difference in handling whatsoever. However the rear bar made a large difference on my 1g...
  33. which car is better?

Having owned a VR4 myself I want to warn you, be CAREFUL. When something goes wrong it normally is VERY pricey to fix it. Like a $250 alternator at autozone expensive! DSM's are cheaper to repair, but don't have the same potential. That said, the 99 VR4 is extremely rare and I'd buy it in a...
  34. "Spec" clutches?

prostreetdsmx1, I'm getting ready to order one from your site then and would like to know what is the difference from the 6puc and 4puc? Does anyone have a preference? My profile is pretty much up to date except I've added my injectors finally so it's getting to be time to get a engine rebuild...
  35. 1G WTF? FWD brake calipers on my AWD?

You don't really need to flush it completely, but do bleed it through a few times with some fresh fluid... Basically the same as a flush but easier...
  36. 1G WTF? FWD brake calipers on my AWD?

Wasn't it halfway through the 92 model year when they changed the AWD pads to be bigger? I'd imagine they are the stock pad of the smaller size...But I might not be remember correctly.
  37. Downpipe/O2 Housing gasket

Anyone know what gasket I need to match a Buschur racing 2.5" downpipe to a stock O2 housing?I see Buschur racing lists a 2.5" gasket at their site but wanted to ask first and see if anyone knows if it'll work or if I need to custom make one.Thanks.
  38. 91 Fuel pump swap - Help!

Well, I finally after having my walbro 255hp pump for about 6 months decided to try installing it today. I got it installed ok I thought, and wired up. I then used the logger software to engage the fuel pump... What I heard was it pump for about 1 second followed by a "CLUNK"! It now doesn't...
  39. Fpr??

They will work. You will have to purchase about a hundred dollars worth of adaptors and parts to make it work though... Buschar and other have a pre-made kit that include these parts but it about the same price anyway...I went the cheap route, a OBX regulator off eBay (they are universal and...
  40. What should my fuel presure be?

Is your 255 a high or low pressure unit? I'd imagine you might have a slight fuel leak in your new line maybe... I run 40psi, but 38 or so is normal for a stock car. The AFPR will cause it to be hard to start when it hasn't been running lately, but not for a minute... That's gotta be something...
  41. AFC Settings

Due to your 2g MAS this might be possible for you. Remember though the 660's are about the largest injector that the AFC has enough range to properly tune. Just bring it back to 0's or -5 or so, then tune it based on the fuel trims to start... Once you get the bigger turbo you'll have to re-tune...
  42. First logs in 2nd and 3rd gear.

Once the AFPR is on you'll notice it bleeds off the fuel pressure while the cars not running. You have to turn it once and hold for a second or two. Then do it again, and give it some gas while starting. I personally run a 1g with 40psi base pressure now also. Honestly, looking at my fuel trims...
  43. How accurate are turbo 1/4 mile times?

The type 1 timer most certainly does 1/4 mile times. However I too have never tested it. One of these days...http://www.hksusa.com/products/more.asp?id=845Let us know if you find anything yourself. I'd imagine it's about as accurate as the G-Tech meters out there. That is, useful for...
  44. AFC base correction with removed honeycombs?

That's exactly what I was looking for. I believe that page answers my question, and the thread posters question... It's just a matter of time for the 1g ECU to compensate for us correcting the fuel map I guess...
  45. AFC base correction with removed honeycombs?

Well, I can't answer your question, although I sure can say I have about the same problem. I'm new to tuning, finally have all my parts installed and am ready to go though. I too have fuel trims around 139. How exactly is it recommeded to tune a AFC? I've read some posts that say tune for .96v...
  46. how many miles per tank should i get

I get 280-320 based on all city, or mixed with highway...
  47. Where can I get an affordable FPR for my 1g?

I am running one personally. It works perfectly, and wasn't a very hard install other than the minor leaking because I didn't use permatex in the first place... Pretty good and cheap part... Of course let's see how long it lasts!
  48. another seafoam question

You know what, even if you haven't understood every other post in those threads about how to do it, there are direction on the bottle itself... If you buy it, in my opinion it's nothing but a waste of $6 or so... And I did it myself if that means anything to you...
  49. Turbo install how much?

This has actually been discussed many times. The good shops ALL charge $250 to $350. Mitsu will want $400. A poor shop, or do it yourself job is $100 or less. What's the difference?Well, you see every part that comes off the turbo has a gasket to properly seal. The good shops and Mitsu will...
  50. what the hell happend!!!?!?!?!?!

I would say it's likely they filled it with el-cheapo 85 octane gas. That would cause it to have very bad knock, and to basically do what you are describing. That's the best case scenario. Worst case, whatever happened you are now running incredibly lean which could indicate your fuel lines are...
