Couldn't find my DSM shop manual CD, don't know where it ended up after a couple of packs, re-packs of the home office. So, I mosey over to Google and do a search of:DSM ManualSure enough, google spits a whole page of links for:Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders...
There's all kinds of posts for idle surge. Search for it. Also check this out: http://vfaq.com/mods/wayback/BradBauer/engine/surge.htmlThe first one to check, in my opinion because it's so easy to fix, is the BISS screw (and washer). I got lucky when my GSX started that, a couple of bucks...
I bought my 91 GSX in July of 91, when I was 38. It's still my daily driver (... although now it only has to drive 1 mile to park at BART). In all that time, only once has it stranded me - that was when the cap's on the ECU went. That was when I found this site and have used it with great...
You won't feel anything ABS from slowing down; that's likely rotor warp! If you panic stop and attempt to lock-up the brakes, trust me, you'll know if you have working ABS. You'll think your foot has hit an open 120 V AC line the first time it happens.
Depends. Even though there is a burned spot, it may be fixable. Hopefully "Steve" will reply and set you straight. One reason to have an Eprom'd ECU is if you want to run DSMLink. They replace the Eprom with their own.Otherwise, there are a number of places to get rebuilt ECU's. Just...
For a 1G, ask if they've replaced the Capacitors in the ECU. If not, do it first thing after you buy it. Capacitors cost about $5, but if you wait til it fails, it's +$200 for ECU rebuild.
All Frickin Right! Got my rebuilt ECU back, and it fired up on the first crank!Who said DSM's aren't reliable? I've got 120K on my 91 GSX, and the ECU blow up was the FIRST time that this car had stranded me in 14 years. And, that was pretty much my fault for not knowing about the...
It has all the information, including the electrical schemas, etc. I recommend it. But it assumes you are already a dealership mechanic. I also will likely spring for the Hayes manual for a little more detailed "how to".FYI.. it was obviously just a burned CD copy, not anything original.
Well, shoot. Wish I had. Didn't even realize I had a potential problem until I started researching. I'll pull the ECU tomorrow to see how bad, but based on the smell and age of the car, I'm fairly certain I got bit by the capacitors. Tell you tomorrow.I wish that the ECU problem was on...
ECU=Engine Control Unit The smarts that figures out how much fuel to inject based on all the other sensors.I'm pretty sure it's toast as when I was doing triage looking at spark/fuel, it smells like electrical failure. Follow the original link to see why... if you've got a 91 and haven't...
I know, I know, I should have read about the capacitor problem on the ECU's sooner. Especially when it started stumbling a month ago... thought it just needed new plugs and a tuneup as it still ran strong at WOT. After reading about closed/open loop on the ECU, I have a better understanding...
I have a complete stock, one owner, 91 GSX with 118,000 miles on it. I've used it as a daily driver here in the Bay Area and it's always been a killer car. Never wrecked, always pampered & garaged, and have always run Mobil 1. The only thing I've ever had to do to it was to replace leaky...
