  1. block heater?

You can install an inline heater. I just replaced mine a couple weeks ago (factory original finally died). it goes in the lower rad hose. Readily available from Canadian Tire or PartSource. IIRC you need one for a 1.5" hose.
  2. Where's my oil going?

Not sure if it's original or not. If the turbo seals were toast shouldn't I expect to see some smoke out the tail or oil in the intake pipes tho? Don't know if it's relevant, but there is no shaft play in the turbo.
  3. Where's my oil going?

I'm going through a litre every 500 miles. No leaks, no exhaust smoke. compression is 152, 160, 151, 150. New Mitsu pcv valve. No oil in intake pipes. Any theories on where it's going and what I need to do to remedy the situation?
  4. bad clutch?

It appears my clutch is slipping above around 4000 rpm (in 3rd 4th and 5th). It's a new (oem) clutch and pressure plate. Flywheel was machined. Broke in clutch for about 400 miles before I got on it. Any ideas? Could it be a bad slave cylinder? I can launch hard in first with no slippage. Just...
  5. foglight removal 90 Talon

How do I go about doing this? I want to get rid of them to improve the flow thru the i/c, but keep them intact in case I ever want to put them back on.
  6. vacuum lines on intake mani (eliminating boost leak)

You may have just answered your question. Could be a leak at one of the injectors. Might be time for some new o-rings.
  7. leaky ps pump

thx for the info. It's not the rack, just the banjo fitting at the top of the pump. Still need to figure out where that second o-ring goes tho....
  8. leaky ps pump

Anyone have an exploded view of the ps pump. I've got a leak at the banjo fitting at the top. From what I've read, there should be 2 o-rings, but mine has only one. Need to get this taken care of before it takes out my alt. BTW, I searched, and the only link to an exploded view was dead.
  9. Grounding wire mod does it really help engine performance?

thx for the info. very informative.:thumb:
  10. Grounding wire mod does it really help engine performance?

Where is that circuit ultimately grounded to? would it actually 'bypass' the sensor ground, or could it possibly enhance it? sorry I'm new to 3-wire setups. wouldn't a dedicated ground wire potentially lessen the noise compared to a shared ground circuit?
  11. Grounding wire mod does it really help engine performance?

On my previous car i added a ground wire from my O2 sensor to chassis. It altered my sensor readings (according to the a/f meter), hence the ecu received a more accurate sensor reading. I guess I could argue by doing that I improved performance and/or engine efficiency.
  12. Starting issues - No / Doesn't / Won't Start - MERGED

sounds like the starter's not engaging. Try this - take a hammer and give the starter a couple of taps. Then try starting it again. If the solenoid is sticking it may free it up enough to engage.
  13. COLD (-30*) starts, she won't start at all...

Use a propane torch if you've got one. Just heat up the oil pan for a couple of minutes - just keep moving the flame and don't create any hotspots - and don't burn any wiring.
  14. bad alternator? ecu?

Car I'm looking to buy started ok, ran for a bit and slowly died. Tried to restart, just clicked. Played with the battery cables a bit and it started again, ran rough and eventually died. Replaced the battery and it started and ran great for about 20 miles and died again. I thought it was...
  15. flex pipe on exhaust

thx guys. Obviously no point in cheaping out. End up paying for it down the line.
  16. flex pipe on exhaust

is it absolutely necessary to use a flex section in the downpipe? I'm planning on putting an exhaust (2.5") together and was wondering if I can go without one.
  17. opinions on a 90 TSI

thanks Spellmen. In our jurisdiction all those items you mentioned (all safety items and basic vehicle function) have to pass inspection before the vehicle can be registered. Typically, it's the seller who brings the vehicle up to standard before selling. we don't have any inspections after that...
  18. opinions on a 90 TSI

hmmm - I already have a 14 sec car - I'm looking for something that'll run sub-14 sec 1/4's with some minor mods. I've got lots of mechanical experience so I'm not concerned with minor gremlins. Normally i'd look for something a bit newer but this car has only 80,000 miles on it and is bone stock.
  19. opinions on a 90 TSI

Thanks Groomz. At least YOU noticed I asked for OPINIONS - not just a regurgitation of facts. I apologize, but I thought it was obvious that I had already done some research since I listed what I know to be the differences in the 90. It's real world experience, both shortcomings and advantages...
  20. opinions on a 90 TSI

Hey guys - looking at buying a 90 TSI awd and am looking for opinions pro and con on this particular year. Here's what I've come up with:PRO 6-bolt engine eprom ecuCON incompatible tranny with other 1gens (anything else exclusive to the 90 model year?) 3 bolt rear end smaller brakes
  21. TD05H question

thx for the info. Just out of curiousity, which vehicles used the 16G as oem equipment?
  22. TD05H question

this is likely a dumb noob question, so I guess this is the appropriate forum. I went to check out a 90 TSI for possible purchase today. The original turbo has been replaced. The only markings i noticed on the replacement is a TD05H. From reading the vfaq's it appears this is either a 14B or...
  23. Cooling Down My Intercooler.

I have a water sprayer on my Probe and it seems to help, altho the Probe's i/c is a front mount. I used a windshield washer system (reservoir and pump) off a junker along with plant misting nozzles from Home Depot. It also helps to use 50% water/50% alcohol for better evaporation/cooling. I also...
  24. opinions on 93 Laser

I thought crankwalk was mostly a problem with 2nd gens. Was it also a problem in the 7-bolt 1st gens?
  25. opinions on 93 Laser

Going to look at a 93 Laser RS awd turbo this weekend and am just looking for opinions. I know it's a 7-bolt engine. Should I be concerned aout that. My plans are to eventually get it to a mid to low 13 sec car. Will the 7-bolt do this and still remain a reliable daily driver? Any advice as to...
  26. Couple of noob q's

That's one of the big problems with the Probe - tuning. Unless you've got deep pockets for dyno time, you're stuck with egt's, a/f meter, and visual checks for tuning. Again, lack of aftermarket makes it real tough too. No data loggers or bigger injectors available. Supra 440 injectors fit...
  27. Couple of noob q's

Hey guys:I just signed up to the board and I've got a few (hopefully not too dumb) questions.Firstly, I don't even own a dsm yet, but I'm actively searching for a 1st gen Eagle or Laser awd turbo. Currently I'm driving an 89 Probe GT. I'm not new to turbos or modding. I've rebuilt my...
