That’s basically what I did I lined up my cams inserted my cam lock then I inserted the timing belt into the intake cam teeth. Then I clip that down at the top with a binder clip. While the lock is still there I very lightly nudge the exhaust cam with a wrench to get the timing belt meshed in...
Yeah I’ve seen people grab the cam gears with wrenches to help with alignment, but I would never do that because remember that’s an area where if your off a single tooth your out of time. Yeah I can see an Allen wrench fitting in the tensioner pulley area that’ll work for sure if your hand can...
Yeah make sure you send it to someone who builds dsms not just an engine shop only because timing a 4g requires specialty tools and another shop may not use these and mess something up like tension on the belt itself. You can assemble it yourself if you get every torque spec and you tighten in...
Okay that relay you are pointing out is also known as the Mitsubishi mfi relay and yes that can cause issues but only related to no fuel issues so if you have fuel that thing still works. No spark seems to be our issue here but you say the cas works honestly it could be a bad power transistor...
Okay first I can tell you your battery is severely undercharged it should never crank that slowly and if you crank a discharged battery like that the heat from the resistance due to cold cranking on your starter can fry your solenoid. Not trying to sound like i know it all type guy trust me I...
Okay not using tools to time it is just giving yourself a headache buy a billet cam lock and also get that tensioner pulley tool or else you’ll have to find something else to tension it. With the tool posted above and a 1/4 ratchet with 1/4 sockets doing the tensioner pulley in car is easy...
Ah I see thanks for clarifying what cas you have. I know 1g dsms are obd1 so pulling a code from those is different than a 2g. I’ll try to help ya the best I can here but someone else can hopefully chime in on this. 1g dsms use a cas that actually gets timed so if I were you I would time your...
Your dsm is acting like mine was it just started displaying those symptoms one day and it only stopped after I replaced the cam crank sensors and timing stuff. Okay first put a scanner on your car and try to find a code with some dsms you gotta play with the port very gently and itll tell you...
Yeah it’s the little things really right. I’m still wondering though how can someone fix a bad mount for the tensioner arm? I’m only asking because I know in the future if I rebuild my motor that’s one detail I would like to get perfect.
Maybe what happened is when the timing belt was installed last whenever that may have been they accidentally put your oil sprocket on off because the way to truly line it up is by putting the mark at 12 o clock and letting it fall. If it falls counter clockwise to the mark your good if not spin...
Yeah now when you say no start like does it at least crank and maybe your not getting any fuel/spark? Or does it not do anything? Just like dsmspick I replaced my starter I wanna say last month and I forgot to hook up a wire or something and it didn’t even crank. See I doubt a cruise control ecu...
Sorry if the title is a bit misleading but what I am wondering is how important it would be to replace and inspect the tensioner arm itself? I only ask you guys because I saw a guy on YouTube rebuilding his 4g and he said that if you slide your existing arm on and can feel side to side play or...
Like jerzm3 stated at this point it’s time to determine if you have balance shafts or if they have been removed. If you do happen to have balance shafts your in for a ride because then you have to recompress the auto tensioner inspect it at that point see if it looks okay and looks with an old...
It could not be idling correctly for a specific reason or few reasons or a combination of a few reasons. My dsm had a really weak idle when I first got it. I ended up replacing the power transistor ignition coil wires spark plugs and then my idle became a lot better although it’s still apparent...
Thanks for clarifying that! Okay this is my last question do 1g and 2g dsms use the same size balance shaft pulley? I only ask because on eBay i see an ntn oem balance shaft pulley going for 30$! I also found a Koyo idler pulley for 30$ says fits 1996 eclipse gst I just wanna make sure before I...
Yeah I agree with you on that for sure. Its gonna be spring time in two months I may have to recompress my new auto tensioner slightly to put the pin back inside of it so I can get to that idler pulley. Will this do anything negative to a new mitsubishi auto tensioner?
How about replacing the idler pulley is that of high importance? I mean this car does have 180k miles although I know my engine was swapped I’m thinking it was maybe just my cylinder head which was swapped meaning my idler pulley has 180k
Very informative I would have never guessed that I will definitely be replacing this pulley. Are the chances high of such an event occuring? I’m assuming the same would go for the idler pulley.
Yeah it would be on it’s 3rd turn more then likely I agree with you motomattx I think it’s important to replace every part has a purpose imo especially something below a timing cover. Also I reused my idler pulley and while they say these can last the “lifetime” of the vehicle I think it should...
Hey is it safe to re-use the old balance shaft tensioner pulley? I re-used the old one, but I want to make sure this is safe before I actually accumulate miles on my dsm.
Yeah even if its in gear its gonna roll so ill just ask my brother or my friend to firmly press the brake while i torque that nut man but you guys were really helpful I appreciate the help.
Ahh okay guys I found the problem when i was lookin at it today the ground wire for the coolant temp sensor itself was severed now idk if I accidentally did this I doubt it or if it came like this but I know that why it doesnt work I attached a picture for you to see. So what I did was I ordered...
Yeah thats the one i replaced the two wire sensor with the harness connector. I also replaced the gauge sensor but thats working fine. I used a 3/4 wrench to install the new coolant temp sensor. It was from advanced auto parts maybe parts store temp sensors are no good?
I mean i know the coolant temp sensor i installed works when i started the car with the new cts the heavy exhaust smell went away and it seemed like it was burning cleaner.
2g turbo 96 eclipse gst. And I do not think the sensor is broken how could it be if my car started after i installed it but it just didnt control its idle. Yeah like ill try to crank it and itll kinda fire over then stall then my rad fan will kick on for a second.
Hi so today the weather was pretty warm around 40-50 degres and my car started up fine it controlled itself around 2k rpm till it warmed up. Then i replaced my coolant temp sensor it started after but wanted to die and I had to give it gas to keep it alive until it warmed up. I tried starting it...
Thank you and I would just like to add from what I understand just about cars here are my dsms problems now i bought it like this im gonna fix it though. It has an ebay non-recir. Blow off valve which is bad if you dont run speed density. Also my car has an exhaust leak at downpipe with no...
Good news tonight I took my timing covers off and I clipped the crank sensor both bottom and top! I feel much better now all I have to do is get a new coolant temp sensor to help with my dsm stalling on cold start I live in the midwest so its pretty cold out here.
Okay before I go ahead and do this does anyone have any advice special tricks used to push those plastic clips through the covers? Maybe i just use a lot of force?
during my new crankshaft position sensor install I was not able to push the plastic clips through the timing cover. Will this present a problem later? Car runs fine
Thats good to know but thats how i originally tightened it when i was doing my timing belt and it looked like my crank moved slightly but after I finished and rotated the motor six times i was still at tdc on my crank and everywhere else. Maybe the crank sprocket jst settled.
Okay ill re-torque that but how do I stop the engine from spinning just use the cam lock? Also when I installed my new crank angle sensor I could not get the clips to go through their respective holes. Will this present a problem later like my crank sensor getting caught in the timing belt?
Thank you pauleyman for the knowledge on that now I know for the future that the pin can come out. All i did to torque down my crank sprocket was use my impact and after I used the impact i put my cam lock in with the t belt on and i used my big breaker bar and i tightened it to about as tight...
Thanks for the response! Okay so to get started yes I was indeed speaking of that pulley with the two holes that you use as a leverager to apply tension to the timing belt. Well lemme explain how i did it I used that extreme psi tool which locks into those two holes abd attached a 8mm wrench to...
Update after we gave it a final inspection i bolted everything back together and now ill plug in the 1996 ecu tomorrow and run it to listen it. I will say my only pet peeve about this was my alternator belt had to slightly get bent against that front frame rail to come out smh! Its still fine...
Update got all my timing covers off was a tad bit annoying since i had to buy an impact to do my harmonic damper removal never remove that with a wrench youll spin the engine ccw! Anyways everything is perfect in spec all my marks are at tdc belt tension is tight auto tensioner gap within spec i...
I agree with you because what we as people may find weird can be totally normal for the car. Also I ordered a 1996 eclipse gst ecu last week should be here tomorrow ill plug that in to fix my issue. Last but not least im only takin my timin covers off so that i can double check to make sure i...
IDK guys my friend told me to pull the covers double check it just in case so that's what I'll do. I already started takin stuff back off tomorrow ill borrow an impact again take off my crank pulley lets see whats happening below the hood before we jump to conclusions. better safe then sorry...
Hi so I just replaced my timing belt and I notice that after sitting there is a soft tension between the cam gears but after running it feels stiffer to the touch? Also my car backfires and hesitates around 2000 rpm Im using a 1996 engine with a 1998 ecu so I have the inverted cam sensor. Could...
Hi so I am doing my timing belt, water pump, cam crank sensors, tensioner pulley and balance shaft belt. So I already have the new water pump installed I installed the new crank sensor and I installed the new tensioner pulley. Now there are a few questions I have. For the tensioner pulley...
Maybe my ignition coil is bad? The engine seemed flooded from all that cranking spark plugs were wet. I have to change my oil out now probably because it has a lot of gas in it. Maybe now my spark plugs need to be replaced and wires who knows when they were last done.
