Well I drew this up today based on the broken one I had. Problem is I don't have the pin part on the backside, so I'm kinda guessing based on some online photos. I don't have an actual one to base measurements off of. I guess I'll try 3D printing this and see how it works through trial and error.
We finished up the engine bay this weekend.Started down by this cross-member.And this is where we ended up...Very pleased with how this turned out ... time to start putting things back together and get an engine in this beast.
Thanks! I documented a restoration of another car on different forum and it ended up being 34 pages! ROFL Hopefully when this is done it'll be a pretty thorough guide for anyone looking to restore a VR4.
Now that we got the car pushed back inside, it's time to get to work on the actual painting. This is a brush-on gloss enamel Rustoleum paint. It takes time, but the results are worth it.Got some more drivers side, firewall and crossmembers to go, but this is as far as we got tonight...
Next day ... time to get some priming done.Covered the windshield before we got going.Firewall -Passenger side -More firewall -Drivers Side -Done ... including wiper cowl area and cross members.Really really pleased with how this step came out. It's so nice to be going the...
Pushed the car outside. Now, that everything is taped off we wanted to give the engine bay a good power washing just to get any grime off before we start the painting process. To be honest, this engine bay is one of the least grimy ones I've ever seen so this step is really just precautionary...
More updates from this week. Grabbed some rolls of tape and started taping off all the lines in the engine bay.It took some work, but we were also able to remove the sound deadening on the firewall so can get a nice coat of paint behind it. I think we only cut it in 3 places.
I can't believe the seats are rotted like that. I don't think I've ever seen anything like in my life. I guess that what happens when a car is shut up outside for years at a time.If you can find one, there are a bunch of guys who swap EVO interiors into the Galant. I've never done it, but it...
Am I correct in assuming this is a heater core/AC drain line? It was disconnected and just hanging here. For context, this at the bottom of the firewall, passenger side, right next to where the charcoal canister sits.
I actually have a bunch of those ^^^ and thought of that. I might go that route. I'll try drawing and 3D printing them first, if that doesn't work this will be my backup.
Picking up where we left off this weekend we started by removing the clutch and brake master cylinders and booster.Pulling the cotter pins on these inside the car wasn't as bad as I thought it might be.Takes a little bit of patience to get the booster out. It's pretty tight against the...
Worked on the car a couple of nights ago as well. This time we were focused on removing things on the firewall. If you've never noticed before, Mitsu had an obsession with brackets in the 80's & 90s. They would bolt brackets to brackets and then another bracket to that to hold it on the car...
Glad to see you check in!! I expect to be making a TON of progress from now through the summer months. And for anyone that ever needs to deal with this guy ^^^ totally honest and easy to work with. I think everyone gets a tad bit nervous buying a car site unseen, but this transaction was...
We got right to work on Monday night. Started by removing the hood. I immediately wanted to inspect the wiper cowl area. I've seen way too many cars that are completely rotted out in the area and unsavable. So, before we got too deep into the car I wanted to see what the condition of things...
Really appreciate the compliment. I don't get too-too crazy documenting things here on DSMTuners since DSM's are so well documented already at this point. But, over on Starquestclub where I also serve as a moderator I've done some pretty detailed restoration threads. Much smaller community...
So we went over and picked the car up to bring it home. My father-in-law owns a rollback, so it's really nice any time I need to move a car around, it's pretty easy. And then here we are back at the house getting ready to unload. My son got to learn how to run the controls from his...
Here's what know about the history of the car from digging around the interwebs:2010 - FL For Sale ad
2012 - FL For Sale ad when tree fell across front end
2015 - New owner swaps white front clip from #539
2015 - FS Thread after being front clip swapped
2021 - punk3rz acquires 1458
So it's time for a major update .... we've spent most of the restoration work on this car so far working on the motor - as you can see by reading through the build thread. In the background we've been buying stuff for the car as things have popped up in the classifieds and elsewhere. Back...
I watch these cars on BaT as well and I keep thinking I should be collecting the missing parts to return my car to bone stock .. Lol.What's really funny, I've spend years, even decades modifying the car in different ways, and I bet I could return the car to stock in a weekend or two. How's...
As mentioned before, we did a little bit of porting out on this 2G TB elbow we had laying around. This is the difference in size between a 1G and 2G TB.Single flute bits work the best on aluminum. We use a Dremel at the end with a flapper sanding wheel to really smooth things out - I...
I'm in the Lehigh Valley area. I used to know a ton DSM guys around here 20 years ago. Most have moved on to other platforms, but there's still a few OGs around it see every now and then.
So we finally put the last touches on the TB. Got the new FIAV gasket installed. We bought a new BISS Screw, but the one that showed up was plastic where the old one was brass, so we cleaned the old one up and put the new o-ring on that one.Time to reinstall the mounting studs on the...
With everything wrapped up on the bottom side and the oil pan dry, we could finally bolt the oil pan on. Here is the pan all painted and dry in gloss black.I ordered a SS oil pan bolt set from somewhere maybe about a year ago, but now that I opened the package I see that they do NOT include...
We've been doing a lot on the top of the engine lately, but we still needed to button up a few things on the underside. So, today we flipped it over.First, the oil pan had been epoxy coated in a primer, but it still needed some paint. So we popped that off to paint.Don't judge the oil pan...
With the throttle body just about back together, it was time to start thinking about the intake manifold again. Back in Post #71 we had soaked it in degreaser to get it all cleaned up and ready for reinstall.Time to find the intake manifold gasket.Got it!Mitsu provides 3 studs for it to...
Man ... this month has flown by. Our stuff from Extreme came in a couple days after order and we got right back to work on the TB.Obviously, what we were most interested in were the shaft seals.Take a look at these old ones:My son did a nice job cleaning the TB up and hitting it with a...
For this weeks "Motor Monday" we learning how to rebuild a throttle body. I've covered this before in my 2G build thread in a bit of detail, but I'll post it here again.First thing up we did was separate the FIAV from the TB.Next thing is to remove the butterfly screws. If you've never...
One other LONG overdue thing I did during this past summer was upgrade the fuel pressure regulator. I've been meaning to do this for years, but just never got around to it. This tiny OEM one is old and tired. Time to go.Went to ExtremePSI and ordered up some 6AM fuel rail fittings. I...
Today we went over to where the car is being stored ... I use the term "stored" loosely since it's sitting outside - more like parked. We haven't been over to it in probably about 2 years. We wanted to pull off the Apexi exhaust and put it in storage before someone got wise to it and it...
I was looking at my 2G thread the other night and realized I haven't posted anything since July. I've been working so much on the VR4 and posting in that thread that I let this one slide. So, after getting the rebuilt axle and new suspension installed, I pretty much just enjoyed the car this...
Our latest Monday installment involved taking a look at the intake manifold. I wanted to teach my son how to do some mild porting, and aluminum is a nice soft material to work with. So we setup the Dremel and I was showing how to clean up and slightly enlarge the manifold runners.Kind of...
Bingo ^^^^ One of the best tools I've ever added to my tool box. They work for removal and installation without damaging threads. I've got some pretty stubborn studs out without shearing them with these. This is the set I have.
With the oil cooler mounted, we now turned our attention to the exhaust manifold side of things. We're missing a stud, and these studs look old and original. So, we removed them all with a stud removing socket. Here we are all removed.Next, we took a tap and just cleaned up the first 3 or 4...
As I mentioned in a previous post, my son plays football, so finding time to work on this project in-season is tough b/t practices and games, but the season ended last Monday, so we are back at it. Started by just accomplishing a small task. We got the oil cooler mounted. Here's where we left...
Now it's time to get the timing belt on and get it timed. I've done this several times before so it was nice to be able to teach him how to do it. I remember having to do it multiple times when I started out with DSM's before it was correct. I also bought some timing alignment tools years ago...
My son plays football, and so it's been challenged to squeeze in some garage time during his season, but it poured rain here all day today so we took time in the garage today to finally get a timing belt on this thing.Started by getting the crank sprockets put back on.Next we installed this...
Just stumbled across the thread tonight and read through the whole thing. Incredible. I can't believe all the work only to sell it in the end. If I did all that work, I have come pretty close, not quite to that level, but close I'd never be able to part with the car. I get to emotionally...
I was eliminating my balance shafts for the first time ever maybe 15 years ago. I could not get the shaft to pull out of the oil pump so I took the oil pump over to the vice and got a pair of vice grips to get it to pop. Well I pulled pretty hard, and finally popped loose, and it came back and...
Well we are able to grab a decent inch-pound torque wrench off FB Marketplace locally and get things properly installed. To start we got the necessary gaskets ready to go.The front case gets torqued to 17 ft-lbs (or 204 in-lbs).Since we're running with the balance shafts eliminated, you...
