Yeah, apologies to everyone for not actually posting what was my conclusion, often a bad habit of mine whenever I get advice for issues with any of my cars. Things get in the way and usually I forget to post what went on, but I have been still been lurking for the past couple years or so. Wall...
I know this is super late, just saw this now lol. Yeah, it was a pain getting in that position, working on cars has made me an honorary Cirque du Soleil member.
I got 2 used door harnesses off Ebay, and I'm making a list with all the part numbers needed for the conversion for anybody who...
I am literally doing this conversion right now. I have an RS eclipse, not a spyder but I also thought I didn't have the harness under the dash for the switch. Both of the joystick plastic panels are in pieces, and I never liked the manual mirrors anyways. I tried repairing them with small...
Hey guys,I'm replacing the valve cover on my eclipse (420a) and I noticed quite a bit of oil residue around the metal half moon on the driver side rear of the head. It had been RTV'd in place by a shop that did some oil leak repairs, but I am redoing some of their work and would like to reseal...
Hey man, keep up the good work. I have a 420a and did a timing belt job a while ago, and it was pain. I know, working on a car when you need it running ASAP can be very stressful. I'm not very much of an expert but for the motor mount bracket (designed by a prime jerkwad), I kept trying to...
So after reading the FSM again, it seems all I really have to do is take off the 3 bolts holding the camshaft cap, put some anaerobic rtv under the edge of it, torque back to spec, and I should be good?
Thanks for the replies guys. That makes total sense considering there's no way it could leak after 3 attempts, its just a simple o ring. Is there much complication involved in removing the camshaft end cap? It can just be unbolted, cleaned, and rtv'd? Do I have to remove the magnet on the end of...
Hey guys,I recently got all the major engine gaskets replaced and now the engine is 98% leak free, but I still have one last nagging issue. The stupid camshaft position sensor was leaking a tiny bit of oil, so I replaced the o ring with a new felpro one. Nope, still leaked. Ok, this time I...
Thanks for the advice guys. I'm currently fixing up a few things on my other cars but I'll be getting back around to this one shortly.
Maybe I can take the time and start with the head gasket first.
Hello guys,I haven't frequented these forums all that much, but I have gone here for advice on doing my timing belt, fixing my water leaks, and bleeding my brakes.Unfortunately, the car has had a serious oil leak since I bought it. I did some diagnosis and found the head gasket is leaking...
Sorry for the late update.
Okay, finally got the pedal to feel good again. Car throws me out of the seat now when I brake. Good idea zotis about tapping the lines, I got a few extra bubbles to come out. I also discovered that I did not adjust the brakes properly. I mistakenly assumed auto...
Okay, I did the two person method as described. I now can get the bleeder bottle to fill up, and I've topped off the master cylinder twice now. On the last bleeding session I got only clear fluid running out (good sign) and the bubbles stopped coming. I took it for a quick run, pedal feels...
No good, the pedal just went straight to the floor. It was definitely firm before I started the car. The pedal did not get any firmer even when I pumped it while driving. I have no other ideas, and I'm really getting frustrated now. I feel like bleeding the brakes shouldn't be this hard. I just...
Thanks for the replies everyone. When I watch the bleeding videos, the position of the hose doesn't seem to matter -the fluid rapidly travels down and begins filling up the bottle. When I do it, the best it can get is maybe an inch away from getting inside the bottle, and the master cylinder...
I'd be happy to get some, think it might fix my problem? I'm reading a few other places, could it be my proportioning valve is stuck because one of the wheel cylinders was leaking?
Before I even began taking apart the brakes, I checked the fluid in the master cylinder - it was still full. You think it might have gone low at some point while driving? When I say badly leaking I mean when I peeled back the rubber cups on the wheel cylinder a lot of fluid ran out, but...
Thanks for the reply. I pumped the pedal at least 4-5 times with each attempt, no difference, the fluid just goes 1/3 way into the hose and then stops. If I take the bleeder all the way out fluid will run out. I have no idea what's going on.
Hello all,I just finished up replacing rear drums, shoes, hardware and both wheel cylinders in my 1998 RS eclipse. I found one of the wheel cylinders was leaking badly, which is why I replaced both. Everything went well, except the bleeding. I've never done bleeding before, but I have done my...
Hey, I think it's pretty cool! Although, putting a 4G63 in it would be very unique....:hmm:
One time I saw a similar car to this one driving in the oncoming lane coming out of a grocery store. That thing had more engine then frame!
Hey guys,
I've got some pretty bad gouges on the panel that's on the left of where the passenger's feet go. I found a replacement online, and from the pics it looks like the same color, but it comes from a 1996 eclipse GS. My eclipse is a 1998 RS, with a grey and black interior. Is it possible...
Hey guys,
I've been having a very bad oil leak in my 98 eclipse RS (420a). When I checked underneath, I saw most of it coming from what looks like a differential cover? Can I remove it and RTV/put a new gasket in? Will engine oil come pouring out when I remove it? I'm not exactly sure what's...
I got it eventually. I had my dad help me (experienced car diy'er) hold one of the camshafts in place and keep the slack at a minimum near the top. We kept trying and eventually they aligned. Two rotations and it was good to go. I wish it was as easy as others made it seem, but it was quite a...
This has to be the most difficult thing I've done on any car, and I've done a few jobs. I just CANNOT get the dang tensioner pulley to stop moving the belt and shifting the crankshaft and exhaust cam out of alignment. I've already tried to move the camshaft and crankshaft back or forth a tooth...
I'll keep trying, but when you say the cam gears need to be tied down, do you mean to each other? I've been clamping the belt with binder clips to each camshaft sprocket, but that's it. If the tensioner tugs the belt its moves both of them in opposing directions.
This is driving me crazy. I get the camshaft marks good, I move the crankshaft back to TDC to get rid of the slack, and everything's fine. When I apply torque to the tensioner pulley, it moves the camshaft sprocket. After two revolutions, the camshaft marks are not good. I've done it 4 times...
Thanks for the reply. I'm trying to get the car back to a family member while they use my car, so it's getting a bit annoying, and eventually I'm gonna need my car back. I got the camshaft timing marks good, and then I moved the crankshaft sprocket to 1/2 notch. I then routed the belt from the...
So now, I'm aligning the camshaft timing marks before I put the new timing belt on (420a engine). I'm using a long straightedge and aligning it with the center of each bolt, and checking the timing marks to see if they are aligned with the straight edge. Basically, I've got the timing marks...
Thanks for the reply. Have you changed them before? I have a special tool kit for installing/removing them, just want to make sure it's not a tricky job or anything. Also just noticed that your two cars have gundam 00 names. Cool, that show was awesome.
Well, my water pump was toast so I just finished replacing it now. I have two new camshaft seals, but I'm a bit nervous about installing them. The old ones aren't leaking, but I'd rather not cut corners and leave them in. The right seal looks easy to get in/out, but for the left seal the space...
Alright, I did something that was not too smart. While trying to keep the left camshaft sprocket from turning to remove the bolt, it ended up moving counter clockwise a bit (maybe 1/4 revolution). Any chance I damaged my valves? I'm feeling pretty stupid right now. It was really an accident, I...
Hello everyone,
I was wondering about a few things I read in the VFAQ's article on changing the timing belt on a non turbo engine (1998 eclipse RS).At the part when it says "Move crankshaft to 1/2 notch before TDC" after aligning the camshaft timing marks and setting the crankshaft sprocket...
Alright, well shortly after I found the leak still coming in, I decided to water test just the part that I sealed on the outside, on the bottom seam of the gas cap area. Looks like my RTV job wasn't that great, because water was still getting through. I cleaned it all off (that was a major...
Alright, I'm ready to cut the car in half to find this stupid leak. I poured water near the gas cap area, and WATER IS STILL COMING IN. After putting the RTV the water is definitely not coming out from that specific seam any more, and whatever I can feel with my hand is dry, so it's sealed well...
Thanks for the replies guys. I really appreciate the help.
The drains are definitely not clogged, I cleaned them out and inspected them after removing the left and right trunk trim covers. They are in good shape and don't leak. There was water leaking from the taillights a while ago, but I...
Hello all,
I have a bad water leak that fills up the spare tire well with water. I traced the water down to the gas cap housing area. It is not coming from the taillights or the drain tube. Anyone have a similar water leak? I don't know where to RTV if I can't see where the leak is coming from...
From the rust I've seen in many types of cars, this should be an extremely important type of maintenance. I wish I knew how the drainage system in these cars works, so I could figure out why 99% of cars rust out in the rear rockers. For example, on my 1996 mercury cougar there are similar holes...
I mean the one directly in front of the rear tire (not the one with the x on it).
I need a way to really clean all the crap out without filling it with water and just making it rust faster. What is the purpose of those holes underneath the car near the rear jack point? All they do is let road...
Thanks for the reply. Where should I aim the water? If I shoot the cleaner inside the hole in the wheel well (the one with a rubber plug), will it drain out?
I'm not sure exactly how the drainage system on these cars work. A brush is too big to fit inside these spaces.
Hello everyone,Does anyone know how to clean out the rear rocker panels on a 1998 eclipse? I see 2 small holes near the jack point, and a rubber plug in the wheel well in front of the tire, but that's about it. Could I just stick some soap and water in there and force the dirt out?I also...
