All my new tranny parts showed up, and I picked up a used tranny with evo 3 stuff in side, it hurt the intermediate shaft and 4th gear so I have some extra parts and will buy a new intermediate shaft to fix this tranny for a back up this year.I also dropped off my new block, MAP stage 5...
Yes I had the block o ringed before last year, and with the MLS gasket worked great until I turned the boost up a little to high :(I had been running around 39-40psi on E98 and towards the end of last year I wanted to see a little more. So the night we drove all over to all the good hang outs...
I will work on some pics but the race car is done for the year. I have 2 spare blocks and heads I am bringing to MAP along with my custom CP pistons and Custom Carrillo rods and many other parts and I want a motor that will handle 850AWHP for a season by spring time. Also on 10-28-2012 at...
The track had tons of grip, to much for my setup. I broke 5 axles in 3 passes, the number of cars and classes plus no open time trials limited me to 3 runs Saturday and 1 elimination run Sunday morning.First pass we upped tire pressure to 16psi, and left the line with 8psi. We broke both...
Time for the small update. The new 3/4 syncro set showed up and they are installed. The tranny shifts great at 10,000rpm and we are working out the tune with the 26" tall tire and shifting. The RPM drop per gear is a lot more then the last few years, but the traction and MPH per gear is well...
Thank you CP/Carrillo for looking over the old parts, and cutting up the new set of pistons for the year. The new pistons have a little different out shape, to help piston stability, and they now have 6 gas ports for the top ring, and they added polishing to the final steps of machine work...
I guess I would have to look at 25.4 rules, but I know for a 25.5 chassis in Minnesota the 2nd cross bar for the main hoop would have to be a little lower, and the inner funny car bar would have to go down to the 2nd cross bar for the main hoop, but as long as it gets the sticker you are good to...
The plasma cutter is the main issue. As long as the machine is setup right, and you grind the cut edge and clean the parts it should weld fine. The reason you do not want to grind down aluminum welds is in the welding process affects the temper of the aluminum. So the weld is the strong...
For MIG welding and plasma cutting auto tints the way to go. I use a miller auto tint with the flame pattern, and it has a good sized window. I wish it went down to a shade 8 for cutting. And TIG I love my Jackson hood with a gold shade, I run a 10 for most stuff but have a 12 I swap in for...
For ss you really need to know your way around a MIG. I would recommend a already made manifold of some nature, there should be one to put a turbo just about anywhere in/on/around a Dsm.Or if you insist on reinventing the wheel thinking it will save you time money or a headache then mock it...
When you weld aluminum its melting point after the oxidizing layer is removed is 8-900deg F. There is nothing that I know of that can handle that kind of heat and conduct electricity and be easy to install and remove. But as far as mock up and taching together you can wrap it in blue painted...
At home o have a Airco 250 water cooled TIG on an 80amp breaker(just have to hold off on 310amp welding).Great machine all mechanical should run for ever. I did adjust the gap on the high freq. And the wife hates it when I weld aluminum and she is trying to tape something off the TV, lol...
I will have my rods and new set of pistons late next week. I have ordered stuff from parts dinosaur and am talking with MAP and Dukes for the rest of the parts. Some good changes this year is new timing belt stuff, I am building a new head with 1mm over valves new springs and crazy light...
If I use a wire feed on stainless its only to gaft some cheaper exhaust back together and the chunk of SS is on hand and right length. Or if I do exhaust hangers on a SS muffler that is MIG welded together from the factory. Use the 75/25 it will stick it together.~John
yes I am a fan of solar tybe b flux mixed with methanol. So I mock it all up either tack or blue tape it together then mark and brake it all down, flux the back side of the welds and weld it all up.~John
You can mig weld stainless steel. I would never try with flux core wire. 304SS or mild steel works, only solid core wire with inert gas 75%Co2 25% argon. Set the welder up for less heat then mild steel welding a little slower wire speed. TIG is the ideal method for SS welding.

Well for the most part the 2g chassis are rusting away all on there own. Looks good man, keep up the good work.I would like to see some more pics of the back end tube work.As far as chassis certification like said above you need to fallow standard TIG welding processes when welding...

I still use the front mounting holes on the block. I have heard of the #1 cylinder wall cracking on high HP cars with the mount cut. I will take a better pic when I get home.
I am ok driving slow. I did a lot of spirit driving early on in my driving career. I did get a hand full of tickets and pulled over way to much. So now I am fine driving a slow POS from point A to point B, but it can not be to big of a POS.And when driving the race car around there is...
I recall we cut the valve seat AS big as it would go for the 2mm overs, and it was no were near the edge of the valve, we just got lucky as can be the 1mm overs lapped right in.Street pulls at these power levels are not WOW for me any more. 2nd gear is over in just over 1 second when its on...
The focus was to see how it was at 40psi, because it runs good at that level, the 44psi would have been a bonus, when you see the dyno sheet you will understand.~John
There was a local Dyno day here at MAP this weekend. I pulled the head off my car to replace some bent exhaust valves and drove it down there to see how the car did on an AWD DynoJet.I replaced the 2mm oversized exhaust valves with 1mm over valves. I ended up lapping them in, which worked...
I have a hand full of things to work on before the car would be good to take down to Texas for some real racing. I hope to get a few things done over this winter and we shall see, about what time of year do they do that?~John
I do need a ball bearing turbo, let me know what you have.I was not at the shoot out due to work, and the car needs some more work before I go back to the track and try to better my ET/MPH.I do have a few build threads, but they are on a local car forum and Galant VR4.org.91 Galant...
This was from early this year:First off a big thanks to Shane and DB Performance for making this possible. The car did make Great power, then we found our wall, and it was 2 fold.So I wanted to get the car back to the 650 or so it was last year so I could hammer out the 60'. Then if...
I have posted videos and pics, in the drag strip section: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/drag-strip/410121-1-4-mile-update-my-91-galant-vr4-1062-a.htmlAnd the Great Lakes region: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/minneapolis-area-dsm-forum/410143-john-maple-grove-mn-my-91-galant-vr4-1062-a.html...
I will dig threw my pics and see if there is anything I missed. Or if you want to see something, or more pics of something let me know. Thanks for looking.~John
I'll sell it to you cheep. And yes we are working on the 60', the car likes to break stuff at the track, or due to weather conditions etc. If I have gone to the track in the last 2 years I either get 2 or 3 runs. I have only broken the tranny 1 time. So with a few more times at the track and...

I run an Eliminator fuel pump, base fuel pressure 40psi, FIC Blue Max 2150 injectors @ 90%duty cycle with a 2.0L running 41psi and my trap speed is 157mph. I would try to up your base fuel pressure to make the injectors bigger, or take some weight out of the car.I suppose at 44psi my car...
And you are now kind of up to speed on the fabrication that went into this crazy project. We figure there is over 3000 man hours in the build up to this point. We have some stuff here and there we want to change, but the car might be out for paint over this winter.~John
Yes the plan was to make it look as much like it did, but easy to work on. The lexan rear window and the stickers and roll cage are the dead give aways, besides the pissed off noises this car makes driving around. If you are talking about the welds on the inside of the water to air, well I...
Here is the start of the 1 piece removable front clip, just to make the car easy to work on. You can take the hood off with 4 pins, or the hole front clip comes off with 4 pins and 2 zuss fasteners.~John
Thanks, this is the fastest and quickest Galant VR4, in the world. For now, I hope someone steps up and takes the #1 slot back. Then I would have a reason to go back to track.~John
I had a fun and long weekend up at the MAP proving grounds, my car number was 1616.We made 2 runs on saturday. The first run was just to see what the boost was at, look at the log, and see if the new tranny parts were happy shifting at almost 10,000rpm.So we cooled the water to air down...

Use a widebang o2 sensor and a palmpilot to log knock, injectors, etc. And as long as everything seems in order it should be fine. For the 1g knock sensor about 5-10 knock count is ok.~John
