Judging by Gilz times, he is running a pretty big turbo that doesn't come to life until past 4000, and to launch on boost needs to be over 5000.Launching at 3500 rpm is only useful for stock and modest upgrade turbos.
I hate to be cliche, but Russ Coxe ran a manually switched lockup billet converter.
Talk with John about the steps taken to strengthen the lockup clutch on a restalled converter.

You are responding to the old part of this thread, from 2 years ago:pA 14b will be fine with your stock torque converter. It will continue to drive like stock. A 14b won't be a noticeable increase in lag, you probably won't even notice a difference. If you do, check all your hoses etc for a...
Baby step upgrade. You should be OK with the stock tuning and intercooler, but don't push it without the basic tuning upgrades.
You need a 16g style install kit. All the vendors have them, ~$200.
Plus, Russ has sold his racecar and shut down his website.I'm sad to see him go. I recall Russ and Kiggly's friendly rivalry from several years back on the ATDSM yahoo group.Any word on his return to racing, or is it quits?
DO NOT LISTEN TO THE PERSON THAT TOLD YOU NOT TO CHANGE THE FLUID! :notgood:
That person does not know what he is talking about. He's probably the same guy that says switching to synthetic motor oil casuses leaks, so never change the oil again. :rolleyes:If you believe thefilter and fuid...
Fluid and filter every 15 - 30k miles. Look in the owners manual, it gives you the fluid change intervals.
An upgraded trans cooler also helps extend the life of the trans.Bill
Why the hell would you ever get a log manifold when there are so many better options with better flow characteristics available? Variety of equal length tubular, the evo 3, SBR cast manifolds and ported 2g are all better choices than a log. Your not exactly limited on space in a dsm like in a...
Are you sure about this? from HKS website:
"... the HKS SSQV incorporates both a small primary valve for ultra quick activation, along with a larger secondary valve for additional discharge capacity. The SSQV is engineered to initially open the small primary valve at light throttle and load...
I wasn't so fond of the color when I first bought it, but the deal was too good to pass up. The maroon has grown on me, though. When it's glossed and polished, the paint looks so deep, as if you can dive into it. :thumb:
I can't wait for the spring so I can clean her up again :DBill
Sorry for the teaser ;) I take that as a compliment :DIt may be up for sale in another year or two. Or I may keep it for a project car and buy some econobox commuter car.
It's all irrelevant since I'm currently I'm saving for a house, so my Talon will be my only means of transport for a...
116k miles on my 97 awd with shift kit and end clutches with no major problems (knock on wood). :thumb:
Having IPT close by my house is like carrying an umbrella and it never rains :DBill
You are from NJ. We have snow. RWD sucks, AWD Rules! A lady down the street from me is selling a 95/96 Talon TSi AWD AT. Black, stock, low miles, cherry. PM me if you want more info.I have a 97 Talon AWD AT with a Big28 and all supporting mods. I love it now (116k miles) more that when it...
Get a good converter now while the trans is apart. Contact IPT immediately for a restalled stock unit. Money well spent if you are doing any performance modifications to the car. Even if you can't afford a restalled unit, IPT can probably get you a deal on a stock refurb unit...
I love my Big28! :thumb:
Mild porting (eliminate step), 550's, 190 fuel pump, Hahn big smic, hard pipes, 1g bov, 3" turbo back exhaust, 17 psi WG actuator, SAFC, pocketlogger, auto trans with shift kit. It's a great step up from the t-25. It spools exactly the same, but has a real nice kick...

The 2.1 block you speak of, what is the combination of parts you are testing? Is this the 2.4 4g64 block with 4g64 crank and 4g63 length rods? Or is this a custom rod length you are experimenting with?Bill
good thread :thumb:On a slight aside:

look in the glovebox of the Evo. Are they tuning 930hp with an AFC??? :eek:Bill
when I'm stuck in really crappy, barely moving traffic, I leave the trans in 1st gear. This eliminates the gear hunting between 1st and 2nd when crawling at 5 mph.If I'm in slow moving around town traffic, I'll leave the trans in 2nd to keep the rpm's at ~ 3000.Otherwise I leave it in D...
I am an engineer and I turn my own wrenches. That explains all the people running away from me! Sometimes I wish I could run away from myself! ...
He is building a car full of gizmos and computers. Why leave out the MAFT?You are wrong about the wastegate. You need to consider the boost level you intend to run along with the size of the turbo. From FP's website:
External wastegates are generally mounted to the exhaust manifold or to...
My turn to hijack :pRuss, I've seen swiss cheese with fewer holes than your car!! Looks awseome.:D :thumb:Since you are on the light weight kick, have you seen these aluminum control arms from specialty products...
I wouldn't dare touch that ESi turbo conversion nonsense. You are just buying somebody's headache. Plus it has the weaker AT trans. The TSi, on the other hand, sounds like a cream puff. Since it's mostly stock, it gives you a good basis to start your mods. Plus it's a 4g63 which is...
Is it safe to assume that there are no tail pipe sniffer tests in kentucky ans Iowa? I don't think that kind of setup would fly in NJ. :shhh:There is also the Borla XR-1 race muffs

:thumb: :thumb:2 big thumbs up for lowered wingless 2g eclipse's!! Absolutely my favorite look.
The jury is still out on the wingless Talons though. Gotta see another one or some different angles.Bill
I think you stated that backwards. EGT before the turbo is HIGHER than egt after the turbo. (Think of it as a compressor wheel working in reverse.) First Law of Thermo: You can't create of destroy energy, but you can convert it. For example, the energy from hot, pressurized exhaust gases gets...
Find yourself a good custom exhaust shop. build it with a 3" cat, at least one resonator, and the biggest oval straight thru muffler they can squeeze in there.Or, if you are willing to sacrifice a little performance from a straight thru muffler, stick one of these in there...
