2G It took a decade, but I'm back

My GSX blew a gasket in 2011. I planned on rebuilding and purchased a lot of parts. I got to the stage where I needed to ship the block off, but had to get surgery. Immediately after surgery, I separated the military and spent 4 years getting my ME degree. Ga Tech moved me to Atlanta from...

How many of us use our DSMs as actual daily cars? Or how many own just a DSM?

Man, it's been 7 years since I've posted on here. My daily is a Veloster. Still have the eclipse in the garage. Motor's busted, so my kid is going to rebuild it over the years for his first car. Now that Skylines are legal, I'll probably be swapping over to one of those in the next few years.

    Battery options

I want to relocate my battery when I install my new engine. Does anyone have experience with a trickle charger instead of a battery heater? I know that BMW guys up here use them because of the battery location under the back seat, but I was just checking if any DSM owners have tried it in the...

    Any Fairbanks guys active?

There's a lot more than you think. One works at Taco Bell, a grey 2G eclipse converted talon, a white 1G tsi awd, a 1G talon at Jiffy Lube, a 2G GST owned by an older native lady, a white 2G spyder, a green 2g RS, and a beaten Laser RS turbo that I would love to get my hands on.

    Timing belt change.

Nice. Get that Bronco running first. When my eclipse blew a ring, I bought a broken 93 explorer and threw in a Bronco II engine and rear axle from a local junk yard. You'll need that Bronco if you plan on having the DSM. My explorer is priceless. Our engines only have a few differences, so if...

    Timing belt change.

I'm in Fairbanks, so I can't physically help. I have changed 4 timing belts and I'm currently doing a full restore. The timing belt is extremely easy to change. Be sure to change or eliminate the balance shaft belt and change the water pump while you're in there. Also, be sure you order the...

    Any Fairbanks guys active?

I probably have another year or two before mine's finished. Mine's in pieces in the garage. I'm restoring and rebuilding, so I'm replacing part of the frame and everything else with rust.

    New project....95 Eclipse

I have a 4G63 that I need machined up here in Fairbanks. I was going to ship it to MAPerformance in Minnesota. Let me know if P3 does any good with the build. It would save a lot of money on freight if I could just ship it to Wasilla.

    Solid SILVER spark plugs??

100% correct. That's why you see gold connectors in aircraft. Silver is the most conductive, but copper isn't far behind. The difference between copper and silver isn't enough to make a difference. The reason iridium/platinum are so popular is malleability. If spark plugs had a constant electric...
  12. Rockyp

    Solid SILVER spark plugs??

The reason people went away from copper is because it's too malleable at high temperatures. It has better conductivity than Platinum and Iridium, but under prolonged use, the electrodes lost their shapes. That being said, copper's melting point is a few hundred degrees higher than silver...

If you're from NC, I have a friend in SC who is huge in stereos. He designed a few systems and has won awards for it. This guy actually shakes grounds. I can get you in touch with him if you want designing info. He goes deeper than just speaker size and type. He even deals with the layout of...

geting tax money what subs to get?

I have this sick double-din stereo with an infinity system. The screen glows orange at night. Plus, if the day comes where people start stealing tape decks again, it wont work without this code I wrote on it. The crackles it makes when the antenna won't rise kicks in some serious highs man. Turbocharging is about energy recovery... why not recover MORE?

Ok. He asked for a physics answer. The question was if he could use the heat to cause the turbo to SPOOL quicker using steam. The heat is created in the engine and the piston forces moving air into the manifold and turbo. If the heat was just there and not moving, the turbine would not spin...

Turbocharging is about energy recovery... why not recover MORE?

Since the turbo compresses the oxygen molecules to cause a bigger bang, I always thought about putting pure oxygen in a Nitrous bottle and spraying that directly into the TB. If you get away from the turbo operation and deal with what can build a more powerful combustion, an air compressor or...

Turbocharging is about energy recovery... why not recover MORE?

Take a turbo and place the exhaust housing in a fire. I promise the compressor wheel will not spin. Blow an air compressor into the exhaust side, and the wheels spin. You just made a turbo work with cold air and not heat. It's exhaust flow that causes the spool.
  18. Rockyp

Turbocharging is about energy recovery... why not recover MORE?

It's not the heat that the turbo uses to spool, it's the air pressures that are shot out of the exhaust causing it to work. With a steam system, a relief valve would not work on low RPM's because that's when the system is at a lower temp. The relief valve would spray as pressure builds. The...

It's not that hard to install a block heater on a 4g63. I've had to do it 3 times.Remove the coolant. Take off the intake manifold. Grab a flat head driver and a hammer. lightly tap the second freeze plug from the driver's side at the bottom where the block meets the plug. (Be careful not...

    Starting issues - No / Doesn't / Won't Start - MERGED

A nice trick I learned up here. Take a bag of charcoal and make a burn pit in something about 12-18in from your front bumper. After the coals are hot (no flames), place a tarp over your hood and the coals. It'll direct the heat from the coals into your engine bay. Should heat the bay to about...

This thread won't work for a no-start at -30. When you start your car at -30 it's going to idle really high. Mine typically idles at 2-2.3k at -25 and lower. NA vs TT

A TT was tried years ago, but failed miserably. I'm pretty sure they did it on a 4G64 block. The closest that I've heard of is a twin engined talon. That has two turbos on it. One in the hood and one in the trunk. You wouldn't want a N/A 4G63. Otherwise the 20+ years of experiments on DSMs were...

    Filters help!

I'm just going to throw this out there. Most parts stores carry K&N. If it's good enough for NASCAR/NHRA/WRC, I think your truck will be fine. Also, house filters have flow ratings that are lower than a car's air filter. Lastly, why wouldn't you join a forum that deals with the type of truck...

91 Eagle Talon TSI AWD What Happened?

Stick with it. 91 TSi AWDs aren't found everywhere. If you're sure a DSM is right for you, pay the 2-3k for a nice rebuild and have a good engine as a building block for the future. There's no point in doing a stock rebuild and trying to reach 500hp with it. If you build it and decide you don't...
