Hi. Im new here and i have a question or two. My current car ( an Alfa Romeo ) is probably gonna be sold since it makes some problems, but even if i fix it im still hyped on the idea of buying a DSM. Now i was always in love with dsm's since the first FnF movie ( yeah pauls green 2g ). Now i saw a good offer in my city of a 1g from 91 that is in pretty good shape but its a NA. Sure it costs 1200 bucks but i dont know exactly what can be done engine wise to it. All i know is DSMs are known for being good for upgrades and i read forums and all over alot of stuff. Possibilitys include turboing the 420a ( dont know if its with that engine ) or Turboing the 4g63 or swaping a 4g63t. Another option witch i have been offered is just put in a EVO engine. But im not quite sure how all of this is gonna happen and what cash its gonna cost me. I have a friend that works at a shop next to my house so the swap process is figured out, now im interested in what is the best option as far as swaping goes. And should i just put a turbo on the current engine it has. Again i have to find out what that engine is but i want to hear the options first.
Edit turns out that since im in Europe our 2g's get the 4g63 N/A with 150hp.
And i guess the 1g comes with 4g63s too.

There were three engines available with the 1G DSM, the 1.8L NA SOHC 4G37, the 2.0L NA DOHC 4G63 and the Turbocharged 4G63T. The very low end FWD cars got the 1.8L and you can tell quickly by noticing the one cam sprocket vs the two on the 2.0L.

It is not going to be easy to find a dsm already turbo where he is.
OP are you in Sofia Bulgaria?
Best thing for you is to get a turbo and added to your DSM, not easy or try to find a turbo car

If you don't think you can locate a turbo car in your area then your best option is going to be to turbocharge the NA car. That said, if you don't have a reasonable amount of experience as a shade tree mechanic doing a bit more than replacing spark plugs and changing oil and don't mind saving up the parts to do the conversion then that's your best bet. The question is going to be try to pick up OEM turbo parts cheap or aftermarket as you're going to eventually want to upgrade anyway.

Honestly though, unless you just REALLY want this, and actually do know a fair amount about wrenching on cars, I'd look for something else. It's going to be a lot of time, work and searching for parts. I don't mention the knowing a good bit about cars twice as an insult or insinuation but rather the fact that a lot of young people don't want to admit when they're in over their head and end up stuck in a bad situation half way though a project. But I'm not trying to scare you off the idea, if you can source the parts and have the time, it's not that hard. First thing I would do is put together a solid parts list, add up the cost plus shipping and see if it's still something you want to do. But IMO it's going to look something like this.

$800 turbo EPROM ECU and ECMLink.
$200 fuel pump
$250 fuel pressure regulator
$350 fuel injectors
$550-1000 turbo (depending on what you want to go with)
$200/250 OEM exhaust manifold, 2g, Evo III or aftermarket like Forced Performance
ARP head studs, head gasket would be a good idea IMO and at that point might as well pull the block and have the oil squatters installed into the NA block like the turbo's to help keep the pistons cooled, and pitons for 2G 8.5:1 comp, re-hone cylinders assuming they're otherwise fine, obviously going to need rings, at that point worth checking the bottom end bearings and if they're on the lose side of the specs replace those too. etc. etc. this is how this happens and you end up spending way more than you thought.
Plus exhaust, plus whatever intercooler you decide to go with OEM side mount or side mount from a different car or FMIC, 2G or Evo MAF, oh and can't forget the clutch since you're about to make waaaaaay more torque than the stock one is going to hold. Once you get all this stuff and do all this stuff you get to start it and find what you did wrong, then on to tuning etc.

Factor in a good amount of time to do this all, and do it right.
