2G Melting fan after small changes?

So as the title is, i melted a fan but i dont understand why! Because i changed very little and have never melted a fan is 4 years ive had it all exposed,
I did quite afew changed but the main few are what im thinking might be part of the issue but not sure how!

The adjustments i did were as follows,
1, took the restrictor out the stock EBC solenoid,
2, Fitted an intercooler.

Thats it that i can think of exhaust/temp related! Now could that restrictor being out make the turbo run that much hotter and possible melt my fan and 1 fan plug,
I checked exhaust and i changed the DP gasket again incase i messed the other one up last weekend and 1 leak i can see is underneath the O2 housing and its small but not in the direction of the fan or plug. Nothing from manifold to turbo, So would the intercooler do this adding heat? Seems bizarre and doubt it is the IC myself but i dont know what to think of this,

I have had everything uncovered for 4 years ish and never had this until the 2 main things above were done and now i melted a fan,

So any advice or assistance would be great, i might whip up a heat shield for now as a safety and see if that helps with the melting.

Raising boost certainly increases your exhaust temps, but it shouldn't be too drastic. I've melted a couple fans after running for years without heat sheilds, and it was very frustrating. I found it hard to believe that they would melt as I had never had any sheilds, nor could I explain why they suddenly started failing since I hadn't done any recent mods. I was finally sold when I opened the hood after fitting a new fan and driving to test it, and as the fan came to a stop one of the blades started melting... Strapped on a heat sheild and haven't had a fan melt again; it really makes a big difference.

Exhaust leaks are especially deadly to fans as the gasses coming out are extremely hot, even if they're not blowing directly on the fans. Good sealing gaskets and heat sheilds are a must in my opinion, and you can fab up sheilds super easily for very cheap. It's not like it'll hurt to give it a shot.

So my small leak from my o2 housing could be blowing air down and then raising causing the melting, since i cannot find a dedicated block pattern from gasket failiure i put it down to excess heat and as you say, maybe the small leak is raising bay temps causing the issue,

If thats the case then i will just swap in my 16g now since i have shields for that already and run it at alot lower boost till i can get the ecu and injectors in, once i done that i can make extra shielding around the fan area to protect it more

Thanks for your reply. I know im not the first to melt a fan but most others i read are gasket issues where as mine dont seem like that so thats what baffled me LOL
 
Any exhaust leaks in the bay are a significant concern as the exhaust gasses can easily exceed 1000°F just cruising, which makes anything in the vacinity incredibly hot extremely fast. A small exhaust leak can lead to pretty crazy heat output, especially under boost.

Not going to lie, it's embarrassing to admit to melting fans, but we've all done it at some point! XD Hopefully a swap with some fresh gaskets and sheilds will solve your issue; good luck :)

Im not fussed if its embarrising LOL as you say it happens to the best of us, just annoyed its not caused this before and sealed just fine and now it leaks and i never touched that part at all! But if thats going to be the cause then im going to just swap my turbos and use all my shields i have bought and get a turbo blanket aswel,

Im never afraid to admit stuff thats happened, just sometimes advice is all we need to figure it out. Now i know the issue i can look into resolving it soon
 
Make sure that your fan is turning on. My turbo side fan was blowing the fuse and I ended up with the plastic fan supports melting (that fan is mounted on the front of the radiator). This car also has a front mount intercooler.

the fan turning on was what made me find this issue as all i could here is a (ting ting ting) as it went around and hit the motor cooling plate thing, for now im going to wrap the o2 housing and in a few weeks take it all off and replace the turbo and im going to get moving on getting my new hood made as then it will be vented so it will also aid the cooling and heat better
 
Updating this thread,

I did all the swaps and new turbo is on and heat shielding and most importantly the new fan went on aswel, been feeling better with the under bay temps and the other day i see its starting to warm the blades up as they slightly twisting but i have ZERO exhaust leaks now so i think its weird why its happening after all these years, and for that im blaming the FMIC blocking flow through the rad cooling the fan blades down!

So i am going to make a cover to clamp into the heat shield for now but i will have to make ducting from my rad out the hood to orotect it further and also it removes heat better,

I cannot think of anything else wrong now, as the cars not over heating so the fmic is the only big change i did before it melted,

Here is a pic of how i got it setup now,

O2 housing is wrapped and manifold is cast from FP with heat shield, turbo has a blanket so its helped but not cured it 100% so on to the next ideas for heat control, or i just remove that fan completely??

Most of the issues I’ve seen are all leak related. Even a small exhaust leak pointed the right can melt wires, hoses etc. Run your hand over the manifold to turbo flange and the turbo to O2 housing flange to check. You might feel something. You might not.
I did all that and the paper test, no leaks and my wideband is not showing a leak either, i have just narrowed it down to lack of air flow to the rad/fans from the front of the car keeping the bay alot hotter causing this issue, i have done everything up again but still happens so i covered the rad with a hest shield and so far it helps
