I just have to vent about the 2018 Eclipse Cross. I haven't even seen this till now. If you haven't seen this disgrace, go to Mitsubishi motors and check it out. The fact that Mitsubishi would dare give this crossover suv that looks the same as all the other stupid suv's they are putting out these days the name "Eclipse", makes me sick to my stomach :ohdamn:. They did away with the eclipse and the Evo. But thank God we can still get an Eclipse Cross . There are zero cool cars being produced anymore (from Asian manufacturers). If you want a new sporty car, you are basically stuck with a scion frs/subi brz. Id die before getting one of those. Or a 370z. Toyota isn't making $hit but eco class cars now. Mitsubishi is in some state of denial that their cars are appealing. Nissan is the same as toyota except for one sporty car starting as 30 grand (the 370) and Im not counting the GTR, who can afford it. Honda I guess is putting out a 300hp Civic type r now. Great, lets all drive Civics again :toobad:

What I'm hoping, since this is called the Eclipse Cross, they went to market with the crossover first to cash in on the current CUV craze, and that we'll get the Eclipse back, a coupe built on the same platform, perhaps even in it's former glory (AWDT) given that Mitsu currently has no Halo cars. I've been disappointed before (come on Mitsu, you literally had AWD cars using near-enough to be the same platform as the USDM 3g and 4g. Throw us a bone...).

I dont know where you've been but this move has been going on for a while now. Sports cars are are going to be phased out and hybrid/electric are coming in. All car manufacturers are pressured with the CAFE standards and new tighter regulations.

Also the new civic type r is actually a damn good track car. Its nothing like the Hondas of old.

That is super gay. Its really sad when ford (focus RS) is putting out a better sport compact than the asian manufacturers.

I hate how all the new cars are making everything electronically controlled. Personally i think that there are a few thing that need to be mechanically linked, like the throttle, brakes and steering. I guess toyota didn't learn anything from their “unintended acceleration” problem cause now they have put a brake-by-wire system into productiion, I haven't actually heard of "steering by wire "but its probably being developed.

As long as looks don't matter, driving a civic wouldn't be that bad.
I remember back in the day when anyone with a honda was the enemy to us mitsubisi drivers. 15 years ago mitsubishi was superior and honda got no repect. Now honda has one of the best engines out there (K series). I was making over 400whp at 9.5psi on a turbo'd acura RSX that had an stock accord bottom end and a stock RSX type S head. Im getting ready to drop a completely stock TSX engine in it an should be making around 450whp when im done.

Unless something changed, emissions restrictions are largely per manufacture, not per model. You can have a polluting, gas hungry sports cars (within certain standards) and have that offset by how green the rest of your lineup is. If I remember correctly, volume plays a part in how efficient a vehicle has to be as well.

You're right though that (affordable) sports cars are dwindling, but I'd say it's less about regulations and more about the current market. The demographics that were traditionally sports car buyers just don't seem to care about motoring as much anymore--they've moved on to other status symbols, and cars are just another disposable appliance, not an object of passion.

Really really sad. I love my dsm. Now that the next version of the eclipse is dead, I was sad that I'd even consider an evo when trying to continue the successor to our platforms. Mainly because I don't LOVE the look of the evo like I do our cars. But it's still something I'd consider. Then I read this today:

https://carbuzz.com/news/the-mitsubishi-evo-could-come-back-but-not-as-you-remember-it

So I'm pissed because I would never in a million years consider an sti. Nothing against them, I have just always loved the Mitsus more. Too bad they are giving up now and hopes for a newer evo have been shattered as well.

Turbo2G ... I love your OP. I feel like if I could have written a post about Cross I would have written the same post as you - I have the exact same feelings. We had a long thread going on about this thing over on Starquestclub forums about 7-8 months ago. I can't see the difference between this thing and the Outlander Sport. I guess it's bigger than the Sport, but smaller than a full size Outlander. IDK, seems like they're splitting hairs for a very small portion of the market. Seems to me like Mitsu totally gave up on the idea of actually making money off cars - I'm not saying that just a sports car fan either ... their whole line-up is weak. The Accord and Camry are still top sellers and they don't even make a sedan? :hmm:

The Stinger is a pretty cool vehicle; the Eclipse Cross is a damn joke. Saw it at the Chicago Auto Show and was disappointed to see the namesake on such a crappy vehicle.

Whats funny is that Mitsubishi is concerned about abusing the epic name "Evo" but they dont seem to care much about the epic "Eclipse" badge?

First muscle car era then it was the TURBO era

They have new muscle cars but it ain’t the same

It’s all about you getting around have to spend tons of cash to go fast and be legal...

The queen can’t be having derelics boostin around with turbo modifeds

You're right about things going down hill after 99. That's a given I think most people can tell. If you ask me, a manufacturer's flag ship car ought to be a coupe, obviously performance oriented, with speed in mind in the very body styling. So why is it that not only did the 3000gt get dropped, but the Eclipse became less than the Lancer? I understand the racing heritage and where the Lancer Evo came from. That's fine.. make a rally car. It's cool. But to make a sedan your only performance oriented vehicle and gradually phase out the Eclipse with run of the mill n/a engines in fwd only was a huge mistake. Now they have nothing. They even got rid of the Gallant, which had some cool options a great sleeper could be made out of. As with the others, the earlier were better. But the point it, whoever is making these decisions should be removed from the company. The name Mitsubishi was respected. Now they seem more concerned about their name being on a microwave or ac/unit or household fan.

Eclipse was named after 1974 Unbeatable Champion Racehorse

“Eclipse was a legendary, unbeaten racehorse. Physically larger than almost every other horse at the time (his heart was later found to be twice the size of normal horses), and with stamina and speed to match, Eclipse was like a superhorse sent by horse-god to win races.”

Now it’s diluted so bad I spent months deciding if I should take the eclipse letters off my center tail and color match it or if I should just replace it with a carbon center tail because I could never have it say eclipse!

I also find myself referring to the car as “race car” instead of eclipse

So embarrassing

When u say eclipse no one thinks Supra rx7 ect ect

They don’t think 1g/2g Awd 4g63 TURBO double wishbone suspension independent rear 2 door coupe under 3000lbs NO

They think this

Dont worry folks, other manufacturers always follow suit, coming soon to a Chevrolet dealer near you:

The Corvette Z06 hybrid crossover!!

I'm actually surprised there isn't gsx's used as drift cars considering slot of people only do about 400 hp or less while drifting. I love my Eclipse. Never thought I would get one but once I did it grew on me even if it's a pain in my ass

I think this is the most spot on thing in this entire thread. Are there still performance car enthusiasts out there like all of us? Yes of course and there always will be but lets face it guys we are not the majority of the market anymore. Did you know less than 25% of cars in the US are even produced with a manual transmission option anymore? And of those cars its mostly just the sport cars whose market requires it.

Most people do not have a passion for their car. They want something quiet with a decent interior and a bland color that has plenty of room on the inside to carry all their crap from point A to point B. Mistubishi has just decided to focus on selling SUV's to this market because it truly is larger than the sports car market. That is why they dropped the Evo, not because it wasn't making money but because it is outside of the image they are trying to create for the company now. So don't expect to see any true performance options from Mistubishi for a long time it's just not where they are headed.

And who cares, let them have all that weak boring stuff. Ive never owned a new car in my life nor will I most likely. I enjoy wrenching and being connected to the mechanics of the cars in the last century and I will stay that way for as long as possible. All the electric BS they are putting on new sports cars takes away from what I love about driving anyway. I'm just gonna enjoy it while I can because mark my words at some point electric cars will be a requirement and IC engines outlawed.

I don't know that they're going to be phased out - some are still selling pretty well. But more manufacturers certainly look to be moving away from them and focusing on safe bets, since historically, performance models sell lower volume. Mitsu has completely abandoned the performance category in hopes of making gains in the "safe" and popular segments - unfortunately for all of the brand's loyal performance enthusiasts.

I hope Mitsu surprises us one day. Crossovers are for women and guys that live in metropolitan areas and have full beards. :notgood:
