Hey! I’m new to this site so correct me for any mistakes so I can learn LOL my buddy has a 98 eclipse gst 4g63t and bent his valves so we got the head rebuilt with Brian crower 272 cams and matching springs. Car also has 1000cc injectors, arm fuel rail, 1mil oversized valves, ported and polished, 70mm throttle body and aftermarket intake manifold etc. so the question is now when we go to start it it blowed exhaust outve the intake manifold and sucks into the exhaust. Intake is very hot when idling and exhaust header is warming and turbo is cold. It also has adjustable cam gears btw. Crank got turned to it’s mark with the number one cylinder at tdc and the cams got turned so the tick marks are facing each other. We are both stumped. Please help! Thanks for any advice and help.

Please post pictures of your timing marks. Clearly it is out of time. How is it even idling if it is pushing exhaust out the intake?

I will have pictures as soon as I get outve work. And trust me I’ve asked myself the same question of how it’s idling! It’s very rough sounding and runs for maybe a minute tops before it shuts its self down. We had the crank turned to its mark and made sure the number one cylinder was at top dead and the cam marks were both facing each other. The turbo system is basically off while we were trying to get it to run right just N/A

Intake completely hot to the touch while the exhaust manifold was barely warm at all and the turbo was cold. Really weird.

Is your firing order correct? It is possible you are firing as you intake is opening.

Yeah as far as we know the order is correct. Would you happen to have an exact order diagram? Everything we look up gives us multiple ways to Hook it up. And thanks so much for helping with this.

This doesn't make sense. How can the turbo system be off? Is your o2 housing hooked up with a properly working sensor? And if you are burning your eyes from the hot intake, that only makes sense if you didn't have your intercooler pipes on, which means the MAF isn't hooked up either.

You installed the camshafts backwards, hence the opposite flow of air through the engine :ohdamn:

That's a joke LOL, sounds like timing to me. It's probably something to do with the marks on the aftermarket cam sprockets confusing you. I know even the stock sprockets have more than one notch when you look around them.

When you lined up the camshafts were the dowel pins up? Also if the mas and intake piping is not hooked up it's going to run like ass.

Please post a picture of what the engine bay looks like. It will helps us understand the ridiculousness of what is going on.

A few years ago, a buddy dumped a lot of seafoam into a throttle body port on my old talon. The car started to die, back fired, and then ran backwards... pushing air out the intake.

I quickly turned off the car, but it didnt turn the car off. It kept running, backwards, after trying to plug the ports with hands the car stalled and died.

I was a little surprised, and figured something was damaged. So i started the car backup, all was good. Car was running the right way, and was running great.

This was on my old talon, and im still surprised it happend. If your car is running backwards, and continues to run backwards, something is off. Something like the fire order is off. Turning the engine incorrectly. Be careful.

Sounds to me like you accidentally installed the intake cam on the exhaust side, and the exhaust cam on the intake side. Please validate that the intake cam is indeed on the intake side of the head.
