So after about 2 years of sitting I am finally ready to get my 1g back on the road. The motor in the car is a rebuild one from Jasper which only has 200 miles on it. Before I attempted to start the car I did the following.
-New battery
-Oil Change
-Flushed the coolant system
-New fuel filter
-New 190lph fuel pump
-New Plugs and wires

I went to start the car and it was a little hard to start but finally she started but had a fuel odor and was idling up and down. So after doing some research I found that I may need to adjust the ISC. So after getting it adjusted the car smoothed out the fuel odor went away. I let it run for about a hour checking for leaks and making sure everything was working properly. I noticed my voltage gauge was dropping and fast then the car died. Went got a alternator put it in and the car was hard to start. Once it started I can hear a ticking noise which gets louder as I rev the engine and it has a really strong fuel smell. The exhaust is spitting out some fuel and has a low like pop sound.

I then did the screwdriver trick to try to found out where the sound is coming from. Its sounds like its either the valve cover or fuel rail. To me it sounds just a little louder at the fuel rail but I have someone coming tomorrow for a second set of ears. I checked the oil and I don't see any metal flakes in it and it looks really clean. My first thought was lifter tick but the strong fuel smell has me second guessing that.

I have good oil pressure and engine temps. The aftermarket boost gauge I have is bouncing around like crazy. Any ideas guys or has anyone had this issue before? Anyone know where to start looking? Thanks in advance.

It is possible that the new higher flow fuel pump is overcoming the injectors. You may need a replacement or adjustable fuel pressure regulator (AFPR) I think dsm guys call it. You also could have clogged/leaking injectors even though you replaced the filter. One thing I've had to do to find bad injectors when they dont have a circuit issue and ohm in spec is to unbolt the fuel rail, lift it up with the injectors inside it still, watch when you turn the key on for no leakage out of any. Then crank and see if they all spray equally. Checking fuel pressure with a gauge would also tell you if they were leaking if you had a pressure drop, but I'm not sure how to check on a 1g.

Do you still have the stock fuel pump? Id re-install and see if the problem goes away.

I'm sorry but overcoming the injectors? A 190 pump will not over run the regulator either. And please do not try and crank the car with just the injectors in the rail. At 40psi plus that's a good way to shoot an injector out of the rail and make a big fuel mess and possible fire. If you wire tie them to the rail maybe.
If idle is steady find out why the needle is bouncing.
