holset drain tube with the bottom re-flanged for the mitsubishi oil pan. the oil pan drain hole will need ported to match. the drain tube is oversized from dodge to begin with and i drilled out the mitsubishi flange so the smallest area in the entire path is 19.05mm. not to mention this is a 35$ drain, instead of those crappy AN drains that do not work well or fit well.

the ends are press crimped so the tube can be spun and makes it easy to get the bolts in. the stock paper gaskets should fit fine too with some careful trimming.

enjoy

That's awesome. Should be plenty of flow for those oil hogs. I'm only running a 5/8 drain on my hx40, which has done fine so far. How did you fit the tube into the stock mitsu flange that bolts to the oil pan? Did you also open up the hole at the pan as well?

Holset guys..

Since I'm considering switching to a holset and I know all of you run them..

What are your thoughts on this? It seems like a viable alternative but then again since I've never run one.. I can only ask the opinions from the guys who know best.

From the pictures I've seen from when Archer put his holset in, that drain tube looks too long.

I run a 12 AN. fitting off of the turbo and on the pan and then run three quarter inch hose between the two fittings. It is a lot easier than using the braided line which is stiff and hard to maneuver. But that's just the way I am doing it I am sure others have a little different approach. But it works for me just fine. I think the hose is only three or four inches long total because the fittings take up some of the distance between the pan and the bottom of the turbo. I use a worm clamp on both ends and have not had a bit of trouble. I will see if I can get you a picture of my drain here in a few minutes.

So here is my drain. You can see that its a very short but slightly twisted route. The 2nd picture is what I finally hacked off and went with 3/4" reinforced heater hose and really so far it's been just fine and easier to work with since I made the "tube" length a little longer. My drain kinked one time with the stiff line so on the hose I use, I use one extra worm clamp in the place it might want to kink and it keeps it round and open. Haven't had a problem in well over a year, of course you can use your choice of any drain hose type. Hope it gives you a perspective at least.

Got boost fever Kyle. You better see a doctor LOL

I am running it exactly as the OP suggested/installed.

I bought a BNIB Holset drain tube (was cheaper than the AN setup) and hacked off the end of it.....I then hacked of a short piece of old DSM drain tube that bolts to the oil pan. I then clamped on a rubber hose like @1990TSIAWDTALON did between his AN fittings except between the Holset tube and the DSM tube.

Works very well since the Holset is sized correctly and the DSM tube is almost the same size.

Length is: whatever the Holset tube is, minus about 1" for the flange I hacked off, plus maybe 2" for the DSM tube, plus abou2-3" for the "coupler" hose. I have a long azz setup tho....the HE351VE's actuator pushed my turbo out far from where a normal Holset would sit.

The OP is right the crimp end makes it really easy to swing it around so you can get the bolts in.

I like the hose coupler too as it means I can leave the gaskets alone and just have to deal with one hose clamp and she's off easy peasy.

Yes it will so check it as you do any other maintenance item with these cars. Good to point that out!

Those that are using a hose to attach the drain make sure to use something that is oil resistant. Any regular or silicone hose will break down over time and start leaking oil.

I was thinking about stating that when I wrote "rubber hose" hahaha.

My hose coupler is oil rated for the record. :)

I find it a lot easier to remove 1 hose clamp as opposed to some bolts and a gasket once the fittings are attached. :thumb:

mine will require the drain pan be drilled out to 19mm and i will be doing that.

mine is almost exactly 12" flange to flange, there are different lengths available depending on what year dodge you buy the donor from, i think there was 1 shorter and 2 longer options.

COST IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE. this even if i did not have a OEM down tube to use the flange from i would just have cut one out of 1/4 inch plate. and i built a die out of a couple sockets to do the press crimp. still it was a 50$ project for better flow than a 100$ worth of AN adapters and hose.

honestly i could make a batch of these ready to go for holset guys if you guys had interest? in various lengths.

i like that mine looks like an actual OEM part, not a hose clamped or adapter to adapter plumbers nightmare.

Yeh, if I could even see mine I would like it to look a little nicer but hey, all of these idea's do the same thing. As long as you're evacuating the excess oil, even if you had to use a pump, it's what a holset wants. Free flow from how ever much oil you're feeding it. Mine gets a pretty healthy dose so getting rid of it is a priority.

I just measured mine, the one in the pic is actually 9" flange to flange so it must be the shorter of the available dodge drains, and there are longer ones available. But it is possible to make it even shorter that just depends on where it is cut and crimped. The AN drains and also clamping a hose on does add a point of restriction. This, while it is not smooth, is very uniform and should not slow the oil drain.

I am actually going to run a 4AN feed with a ported oil filter housing and a bypass spring out of a non turbo 3000gt. This should be tons of volume but a lower pressure so the holset should be in heaven

It will love you for feeding it healthily. I have had mine back in the shop and he always say's I don't know how you are feeding it but it shows no signs of thrust bearing wear at all, so feed her good and drain her good and she will be good to you!
