So I decided to see if my glove box would lock, and sure enough it did but now it won't unlock:cry:. I'm using the same key as the one I locked it with and me and my friends have tried numerous times with no luck. Can I drill it out? I don't care if it will lock again I just want it to open and close.

Elaborate your meaning of "everything". I know with my own master key and glove box (as well as driver's side door) I need to either jiggle the key or insert the key differently (you would think it wouldn't matter, but it does with mine). Maybe some WD-40 would also help the situation. Also try inserting the key at different lengths (in millimeters) from the end of the key's shaft.

^ ^ ^ Yup. Your key is worn out, and the glovebox lock isn't (since it's unlikely anyone had ever locked it before). A good locksmith will fudge the cutting of a new key, using his experience to guesstimate how badly your old key's been beaten-in by having all that shit hanging off its key ring. Put it in the lock, apply slight twisting pressure (I think it's counter-clockwise to unlock) and jiggle. You're doing the same as the punk down the street who steals cars with a filed-down key.
There shouldn't be anything so expensive left in the glovebox that it should ever need locking, but o well.

And in the future, run your ignition key naked, and always carry a second in another pocket.

same problem. bought my 98. put a new deck in the car. locked face plate in glove box. with the key i used to lock the glove box i tried later to open to put face plate back on and the key i locked it with wouldnt open it. so dumb if it locks it should unlock. luckily i had another key at home the car came with. tried it and it unlocked the glove box. going to make plenty of copies of the good one and rid the other one.

ok so i decided to go make copies of the key that unlocks the glove box and they wont unlock the glove box. isnt that wierd? its not a chip key so any key maker should be able to copy it right? IE home depot? i made 2 copies and they wont unlock it but the 1 i used to make copies of does.

yeah works on everything but wont unlock the glove box. dont know why. its not a chip key. nothing special about it. a straight copy of the key that unlocks the glove box should work. maybe its just our car? i dont know. sucks though.

i have 1 key that locks it but wont unlock it. i have another key just a all metal key no rubber or anything that locks it and unlocks it. i made copies of the key that locks and unlocks it and the copies of the one that locks it and unlocks it dont work. which is strange because there is no chip or anything. its just an all metal key looks like a copy. just starnge the copies of the one that works dont work.

Hey guys. This is another thread that saved my life.

I own a 2G Talon. And this is what I had to go through. I put my registration on my glove compartment and I need it to renew my tags. I locked it and could not get it open of course. So I read this and figured my key was too worn out. In fact I ran into a similar problem where my ignition would not turn. Luckily I had a spare and that would work just fine. So I made a copy of the spare and used that for the time being.

After locking myself out I tried spraying WD-40, wiggling it, kicking it, punching it. Nothing seemed to work. So I decided to get a new key from the dealership. But it wasn't easy

Called 3 or 4 chrysler dealers and they all told me my car was "too old" and the key machine would not make such key (which I think it was BS) because one dealer finally said yes. The problem is that they didn't have a blank key. So I called a bunch of Mitsu dealers and finally got ahold of one for $20. The mitsu dealer would not cut the key down because they say my VIN was for a chrysler vehicle. (again I think this is BS since DSM are both mitsu and chrysler).

Went with the mitsu key to the chyrsler dealer 30 min away and finally got it done. I guess my key was so worn out that the new key looks almost like a different key. The guy was nice and didn't charge me anything for cutting down the key :D

First try and got it unlocked.

My recommendation if you want to save some money. Even though the OEM key looks great, I think $20 for a key is too much. You can get it of a OEM catalog for like $12 but shipping is like $10 so if you need to get other stuff it wouldn't hurt. But I needed it ASAP. You can go to a walmart or home depot and buy an Axxess 51R blank key for like $3 and go to the dealership and see if they would do it. They might give you a crappy speech about how the "machine will only take OEM keys" but it's worth a try. Make sure you tell them to make it from the VIN number an not a copy of your actual key. DO NOT HAND THEM THE KEY.

Best of luck

After reading your posts and concluding that I probably had a worn key, i wrapped my key in a couple layers of aluminum foil and gently put it in and jiggled it and it finally opened. Woot woot!

All my DSMs have refused to unlock the glove box at one time or another. They're old, the keys aren't crisply cut anymore (unless a new key). I've always just had to be patient and jiggle the lock. Same with my door and trunk locks.

No need to go to a dealership to get a brand new key cut only to be turned down for having an old car thats no longer in the system. Remove your passenger door lock. The key code is engraved on the cylinder. Take that code to any locksmith or key place and they can cut you a new key from that code.

Not only this, but back in 2010, the last time I got a key made, the dealership told me our key blanks were discontinued and I could only get a blank from a key shop. Was told that at the Mitsubishi and Chrysler dealerships. Now 7 years later, finding the blanks may be a bit harder.

This is good info. However, removing the cylinder is a PITA

If you find removing a ring/circlip a PITA you must have issues. The only tool I used was a screwdriver, and that includes removing the door panel. 5 minute job tops.
