Hello Dsm'ers

I know this is a MLS Gasket From Cometic but I was wondering I don't know the exact type like the diameter and such so I just measure on the inside the Full Circle to get that correct? and the Thickness of course is just measure the MLS fully compressed..

Only reason I ask this is I want to know what to buy when I purchase the new Gasket... Plus there is another Underlying question I was wanting to ask.... Look below these pics for that "?"

Here is what I see..

Inspect the Deck

I hope I don't have to deck it just trying to save money on unnecessary things if possible..

I look forward to hearing back any advice..

If you don't get your head and block decked, don't use an MLS gasket. Use a normal composite gasket from Felpro: http://www.extremepsi.com/store/product.php?productid=17780&cat=863&page=2

Inspect your block and head the way he's doing the block. If it's out of spec and you don't want to have it decked, use the composite gasket. It won't seal right with an MLS unless decked.

You would have to check the deck flatness with a machinist straight edge and a light behind it and a set of feeler guages that go down to .001

So say the block is flat within .001 to .002 could i use a mls . i had the head check and it is flat.

The mls gaskets require a surface that's perfectly smooth not just flat. They can't fill in minor surface imperfections like a composite gasket can. Cometic calls for 50Ra or finer surface finish.

Why are you changing the gasket? If there were no sealing issues with the cylinders I would clean and inspect the deck.

You can use a razor blade to clean off the gunk and a red scotch brite to finish removing fine particles. Once the head and block surfaces have been cleaned, you should use a machinist straight edge and a set of feeler gauges to check for flatness. Most feeler gauges only go down to .0015 so thats what I use for this test. The feeler gauge should not pass under the straight edge at any point on either surface.

If both surfaces pass this test and you did not have any previous issues, there is no reason that you should not be able to replace the MLS gasket without any machine work. I hope this helps.

I decided to pull the engine after it started leaking oil and I couldn't tell where from AND my Transmission was Slipping(now I know why. Crappy Shop switched part or idk story for another time).. I am a novice at DSMs I worked on V8s and such with my dad in my teen years but nothing substantial and plus that was like almost 20 yrs ago I remember some stuff but I wasn't into cars as much as I am now.. BUT ANYWAY.. I plan on resealing EVERYTHING with brand new seals and locktite where needed and Replacing the HODGEPODGE of Bolts n Nuts I run across.. Maybe even Tap a few holes out to make sure the bolts run smooth in.. Just wanna get the engine running smooth again and do a few other UPGRADES.. Like BBK and Stage 2 Upgrade with EVO Syncros to my Trans By TRE Transmissions.. I am looking for BBK I would do the CTS-V I seen but kinda low on funds for that with this build maybe Evo Brembos with VR-4 Knuckles.. but maybe next year tax season. LCAs and Billet Transfercase housing is in there.. Both by Members here.. Group buys... List goes on n on.. lalalala
