Found an interesting problem. The motor on the upper driver's side likes to loosen up it's bolts over time. I actually had to get new studs due to the old ones being destroyed by the mount rubbing against them. This isn't the first time I have heard of that joint failing. The studs actually came out of the mounting bracket about 4 turns and were loose enought o wiggle.

Two things:
1) Is this failure prevalent enough to warrant adding a "tighten motor mount studs" to the recommended maintenance?
2) I bought new studs from stm. They are supposed to be for the 2g mount on that side. Attached are the old part and the new part side by side. They definitely are not the same. Most noticeable is the lack of "his" on the new part and the length difference. The length doesn't seem to matter, but the mount is shaped to utilize the "hip" shape. Is that going to be an issue? Did I get the wrong part?

It looks like the correct part. I'm pretty confident mine is straight like the one you got from STM. Can take a look in the afternoon to be sure. Checked the oem parts listed on extremepsi to compare and it looks exactly the same. Do the threads on the mounting bracket still look good?

The threads were ok. One hole lost the top half, but the studs are tight and feel solid.

Don't know if your new part will be an issue. Tapers are usually to help guide & establish alignments. Both my cars still have the originals & they look like your old one (one pictured on the left).

Doubleclutch, my 1ga has the "L" bracket motor mount and the nuts on the studs kept getting loose, letting the motor "sag" in the bay. I put GREY vibration resistant RTV on the threads and they haven't loosened back up yet. My car likes to shake everything loose so I tend to use it on almost all of my fasteners. I dab just a bit on the exposed threads after assembly so it acts like a "lock" to keep things from wiggling loose. Just a thought.

I worked at Cobalt Boats for a short time and those things vibrate bad, so we put RTV on every thread that was exposed on every boat. Was a good thing to pass down to other projects!

So it is something that should probably be added to the newb maintenance checks.

Oh you're not in the nube status! Just a tip from an old man thats done alot of things and why not use that knowledge on these monsters too! :thumb:
I do keep it on hand at all times!
Maybe checking on those bolts periodically yeah. With my RTV on my nuts or threads, I can visually see they are still in place and haven't "fallen" off like stuff seems to do LOL.

I appreciate that you think of me as more than a newb. LOL. If they don't stay tight i will use some loc-tite.

I was more saying that it should be added to the "I just bought a care how i do i go faster" threads that are always responded to with "do the maintenance first." It would be added to the "do the maintenance first" list. Stuff like timing, fluid flush, clutch adjustment etc.

Maybe so. It's almost like Mitsubond. Made by Permatex. Holds vibrations and seals fast. Thanks. Just suggestions. :thumb:
