So, I'm looking for a helmet now that I am in need of one, don't want to spend a lot of money on this potential life saving piece of equipment. Suggestions? And I would rather not hear about my priorities.;)

In all seriousness though drag racing my car is just means to an end, once I can click off a solid 12, I doubt I'll put it through the abuse anymore so justifying some 250+ dollar helmet is hard to do. I tried on someone's Fuel brand helmet in a medium size, loved it. But the $60 price tag has me wondering why it's priced so low compared to others. Are they actually NHRA legal and good to Go?

Will a DOT motorcycle helmet do? Or is it supposed to be a SA2010 or SA2015 rated Helmet? I think I know the answer but wanted to check before buying.

Hey man, I scored 3 helmets last year watching Ebay clearance and old stock items. I got 2 Impact Racing and 1 G Force Helmet, all Snell 2005 for 90 buks each, brand new in the box. The G Force even has the HANS device attachments. Keep your eyes open! They need to be Snell rated at my track not DOT. I just typed in Snell 2005 racecar helmet and quite a few came up. Even this Simpson (Impact's mother company).

If your track requires something newer than 2005 then 2015's are the next I think but they will cost more. Mine are great helmets. :thumb:

Most sanctioning events will require a Snell rated helmet. Typically, they are only good for 10 years. To play it safe and ensure you can use it for a handful of years, shop for a helmet that is at least SA2010. SA2005 will be real cheap right now because they are phased out. Summit and Jegs can get you what you need for about $170. If you plan to be into motorsport events for the foreseeable future, then spring for an SA2015.

As of Jan 1st 2017, NHRA sanctioned tracks require a Snell SA2010, SA2015, M2010 or M2015 rated helmet No more SA2005 rated helmets. According to the IHRA 2017 rulebook, SA2005 helmets are still legal this year at IHRA sanctioned tracks.

That $60 Fuel brand helmet is not Snell rated and would not be legal for faster than 14.00 ET at an NHRA track. That $80 Ebay helmet is rated SA2005.

I am surprised that it is Snell rated. Usually when it says meets/exceeds Snell ratings, it does not equate being Snell rated. It has the large sticker under the padding? If so, that is a good deal.

Has a Snell 2010 on the back of the helmet.

Has a Snell 2010 on the back of the helmet.

You will need to check inside the helmet. During inspection, they check inside the helmet for the Snell label:

I love my HJC Hellion that I bought from a local motorcycle shop for $130 CAD + tax. SA2010, comfortable, lots of features, great price. Go to any motorcycle shop and try some on (bonus benefit of supporting local business!!!).

Does your regulations allow motor bike helmets then? As ours does not, they have to be under and over chin strap and no click system and can ONLY be dedceted racing helmets! Bike helmets snell or fia are still not allowed because they have different padding and conforms to different rules here,

I got a hedtec helmet which is snell and fia rated and it can only be used on track but not on bikes!

I think I found one, Snell M2015 rated for 85 + 30 shipping but has a scuff, new but discounted due to the scuff, or the same unit without the scuff for 119 + 30 shipping. WTF $30 shipping!? It's like 3.8lb, put it in a cardboard cube, can't be that much to ship...

I don't think the track officially allows the use of DOT motorcycle helmets, I think he must have just slipped though the cracks. It's Atlanta Dragway, it's apparently owned by NHRA so they're very strict about enforcing the rules, or so it appears. Some of the drivers were telling me of one or two other tracks a little further away that were MUCH more lax on the rules. I'm not sure that's a good thing, either way I figure I need a helmet if I'm going to want to be able to make more than 2 pass's on any trip there to race so.

I got this one one Amazon about 3 yeard ago for under $100. It's listed at $120 now but there's probably a newer version available. It's a motorcycle helmet but I don't care. Works at Bandimere Speedway for test and tunes :D
