Hi, I need a replacement clutch kit, for a stock 1G that I would like to eventually mod. My time on the internet is limited, so I cannot do a thorough search myself, although I have and have come up kinda empty handed. Any help is appreciated, thank you!

Southbend for stock pedal feel but higher load clamp!

Thank you all for the quick replies! This is going to be the biggest project ive done on the car. Can anyone explain what the difference between "4 puck and 6 puck"? Or the different types of clutches, for example: sport performance and heavy duty. I should add that I'm on a budget and ultimately just need the car running asap as it is my daily (unfortunately).

Whichever clutch you decide to go with, do not overlook other items to consider as well.

  • Resurface or replace flywheel.
  • OEM TOB.
  • Inspect pivot ball/fork (I would replace, but some do not)
  • Gear oil for trans/t-case
  • Brake fluid
If you plan to daily drive your car, I would not recommend a puck-style clutch disk.

Thank you, yes it is my daily driver and will be for quite awhile so if that is a factor I hadn't considered to mention. If not a "puck" style, what other options are there for me?
So I take it that a clutch kit would not include a replacement fork/pivot ball or flywheel ?
And that means I have more things I need to look into in order to fully replace the clutch? Would it probably be best to just replace it all with a stock setup? Sorry for the bombardment of questions LOL.

I would recommend a full-face disk. (non-puck)

Typical clutch kits will contain:
  • Clutch disk
  • Pressure plate
  • TOB (throw-out bearing)

Yes, as mentioned in post #8.

If that is what your budget dictates, yes.

Hey guys, after looking around at different clutches, I found this South bend clutch that i feel would work well with my stock car, and my budget. Does anyone have opinions on the stage 2 daily? http://www.southbendclutch.com/listings.cfm

And I was also wondering if it would be overkill to put a stage 3 clutch in a stock vehicle, that may or may not reach stage 3 ponies?

I don't think it would be overkill to get stage 3. I would just get a stage 2 daily and call it a day. By the time you've upped your power level you'll have a better idea of what you'll need.

Thank you Vegas! I must also ask if the TOB for the kit would be up to par, or should I always no matter what stick with getting an OEM TOB for any clutch? I am prepared to order one, no biggie on that.

My vote goes to OEM. I have destroyed both, but OEM has held up longer for me.

The link you posted for Southbend only show non-turbo clutches. You should contact TMZ Performance for your clutch if you go the Southbend route otherwise go stock till you need to upgrade for your anticipated future mods. They have special Southbend clutches just for our turbo cars.

If your'e getting a South Bend, I would just go through Tim, our local DSM South Bend clutch dealer. His username on this site is twicks69. Shoot him an email or PM and he'll get you squared away with a clutch that fits your needs. No sense in spending big bucks if you're just putting around town in a near stock car.

I got a Stage 3 SS-TZ a few years ago and it has held up fine in my modded car with a stock flywheel. Pedal is firmer but nothing too outrageous. I daily my car and sit in traffic and my leg doesn't get tired. Unlike some other aftermarket clutches out there where it feels like you're driving a farm tractor.
The friction plate is made of Kevlar on the SS-TZ I have, which takes longer to break-in but is plenty robust and has a pretty smooth action like the organic clutch materials. The Kevlar can glaze over in stop-and-go traffic but you can actually deglaze it through normal hard use. I've got dozens of drag strip launches on it and it is holding on just fine.

This thread has a bunch of South Bend clutch info if you're seriously considering one.

Thank you Dhan for your time chiming in. I appreciate you describing your clutch set up to me, that is very informative! I'll give twicks69 a shout and will peruse the link you shared. Thank you!

For a stock feel on the pedal (so you don't wear out the pedal bushings) but more clamping force, the Southbend is it. Love mine.
