I have a EVO III 16g with quite a bit of Axial shaft play (in and out) Radially (side to side) the turbine wheel is rock solid. I plan on doing a rebuilt on it. I'm wondering if any rebuild kit will work or if I need a specific kit because of the Axial shaft play.

You may need a new turbo. With really bad play the gas control ring on the turbine can damage the groove in the turbine, and cartridge. Usually the compressor wheel gets damaged from axial play also.

I would take it apart and make sure it's worth rebuilding before buying a kit.

If it's a Genuine MHI 16G, you can buy a new CHRA to use in your housings assuming they're undamaged...if it's aftermarket/Chinese, the turbo's not worth fixing.

"Quite a bit" of in/out play means you likely need a new turbo. There's only about .025" or so of clearance before the compressor wheel hits the housing and the turbine hits the heat shield, damaging both beyond use.
