So first I will start with the basics. How can I tell if my car is 1g or 2g? My car is a 1999 Misubishi Eclipse GST turbo Spyder. Probably should go without saying but its Convertible and is an automatic.
Second question. How would I go about changing the interior trim color from black. Also im interested in repainting my car (Previous owner got a 10-Footer) And my final question needs some explaining first so basically my car has some frame rust that was caused from it being in Chicago (Salt and Snow) and I need to get it repaired does anyone know how I would go about that? If I have any other questions il ask later and thank you for putting up with a newbie

To simplify things a lil more, 1g and 2g basically means 1st generation, and 2nd generation. Like mentioned above the 1st generation or "1g" is from 1990-94 and the 2g from 95-99. There are also 3g and 4g but those are completely different and have their own forum.

I also own a 99 spyder. Do you have the GST or the GS? It should be labeledin the back by the trunk on the right

He stated it was a GST Spyder in the 3rd sentence.

No matter what color you're wanting to get rid of, you just simply remove the interior panels and put in ones of a different color, unless you're just wanting to dye the panels. That's a different process that is talked about on the forum somewhere.

If you're not familiar with rust repair, it would be best leaving that to someone who does know how to do it. It can be pricey though.

Where would I go about finding these colored panels and also I never intended to repair it myself I'm only 16 :p this is a project car for me and my dad

Also this is one of the pics I have of the rust (will get more later) this is under the car on the passenger side

Well, any of those panels can be pulled off easily. They're only held on by clips, bolts, or screws, or a combo of those. If you're not sure on location of the hardware, just pry a little at a time to narrow down where the fastener is located.

I'm not that new what I'm trying to ask is where I can get these Colored replacement panels because iv searched and have yet to be able to find any

Look through the classifieds here on the forum, salvage yards, craigslist, facebook DSM pages. You can get them new from JNZTuning.com, but they're pricey there. You'd get a better deal anywhere else unless you're looking for factory new.

Anything safe for plastic should work. I know most part stores carry something in a rattle can made for plastic trim. I don't know what colors it comes in, and I can't speak to the quality of the finish as I've never used it.

No worries. Like it's been said, those are painted. I used to do that way back when I first got into DSMs. Like 91talonts1 said, use a paint that's safe for plastics. The key though to a good painted part is proper preparation. Make sure you lightly scuff the surface prior, and maybe use a good adhesion promoter. Some swear by using it, some don't. I've used it and not used it and still don't have a preference either way. And to make sure your paint job lasts, spray on a good clear coat to protect it. Be sure to read the labels on the paints you choose. They all have a temperature range in which they're ideal to be used at. If you spray a part while the temp or the paint itself is cold, you'll probably end up redoing the part. Be patient, and spray light coats. More light, even coats are better than 1 or 2 heavy coats. Don't spray the paint to close to the part, keep the can back 10-12 inches or more if needed. Let each coat fully dry for better results.

I apologize though for not know this was what you're asking about. I really thought you meant changing panels. Keep asking more questions though if you got any.

As much as I dislike the stuff, you might be better off using something like Plasti-dip to color your interior panels like that. It sprays on almost like a vinyl, which I would think would adhere better to the interior than regular paint. The best part is, it's removable, so if you decide you don't like the crazy colored interior, you can go back to stock!

Thanks man the only questions i have are ones that revolve around how i can afford stuff that i need to replace. The main things are 1. My exhaust system( We are removing the CAT) 2. My Brake lines (One rusted out so we are replacing them all. 3. Getting someone to fix the frame rust. 4. Fixing or replacing the ac Condenser. And i have to do atleast the first 3 with 500$ any advice on good but cheap parts?

For cheap parts like those, your best bet would be to look through salvage yards or craigslist. Maybe even the classified section here on the forum. Some people sell some good stuff at fair prices here. As for the rust part, it would be cheaper to do it yourself, but that all depends on skill, or you could post an ad on craigslist looking for that sort of help and possibly get lucky. Look to see if you can find people parting out their cars. The parts you're wanting are typically overlooked I think, so there may not be a high demand, and less people looking for them.

I actually do have a aftermarket exhaust system sitting in storage from when I converted my GST Spyder to AWD and could no longer use it. It's an Apexi N1 system plus the down pipe, 3in all the way, no cat. If interested, just send me a PM. But, shipping wouldn't be cheap for how much it weighs plus the size the box would need to be to put it all in. Just a thought though.

I would hold up on painting anything for now and would focus on maitanence first

Theres a maintance list somewhere for 2gs i would search it up and follow it to the t .

Now for the painting part of the interior panals id advise against it.
Ive never seen one turn out better than stock.
Usually it adds a low quality feel to the car and will chip away easy, an affects re-sale value .

Seems more of a jdm fad or honda thing to me but its your car so do what ya want!

Hows the strut towers? They usually like to disintgrate.

Hows the timing belt?
If u cant awnser that question than add number (5) to that list as "timing belt" usually a 5-600 dollar bill to do on its own .

Does the convertable top leak?

Also dont use ebay for anything " go fast "
I dont even like ebay for anything automotive.
Can get a hell of a deal on a rasberry pi 3 tho hah

Rember to search until you cant search no more

I understand but the timing belts great actually (only has 105k miles on the engine) the top is leak free and have yet to see the struts. Also thats why im leaning more towards plastidip so if i dont like the way it turns out then i can peel it off but now that i cleaned out the interior and made it look clean im thinking of leaving it stock (all black) although i hate the grey carpet

There are plenty of places that sell Carpet precut for the 2g. Honestly anything but stock on the trim just looks... wrong in my eyes. And the other thing is yes there may only be 105k on it... but What are the OEM Manit suggestions, also who is to say how hard that car was driven in those miles.

Timing belt change interval is every 60k miles, if you can not verify how old or how many miles are on it then it is best to change it. FYI, if it breaks say bye bye to some valves and possibly/likely some pistons too! A timing belt job is much cheaper than an engine!
Good luck with the project and keep researching and wrenching :thumb:
