Hey guys, I've recently come across some issues with my car. One day, I was driving to work and everything was fine. I got out, parked my car, and went into work. It came time to leave work, and I go to start up my car and a whining noise arose from the engine bay. I didn't think much of it because when I got out to inspect what the noise was, everything looked fine. On the way home, I noticed that my car was stopping a lot quicker when I was coasting to a red light (it felt like I was pressing the brake pedal at about 10%, but I wasn't on the brake at all), and around 5mph there's a metal-on-metal rubbing noise until I completely stop. While at a complete stop, the whining noise coming from the transmission area didn't go away until I pushed the clutch in, and then it went away completely. I also noticed that when I got up to cruising speed (40mph-50mph), the car would feel like it was vibrating and a droning sound comes from the back of the car. As I got closer to home, it felt like my front passenger wheel came loose and was wobbling like crazy, but when I got out to inspect the wheel it was secured completely. I know it's a long post, but a lot has been popping up in the past couple days. Any input helps! Thanks.

Video showing the whining/whirring noise coming from transmission area. The noise goes away when I push in the clutch, but immediately returns when I let off the clutch.

I didnt watch the vid but i would think the throw out bearing. I wouldnt drive it AT ALL. Just pull the trans and check it out.. But i love working on cars so dropping the trans is nothing. Im not sure what your skill level is or what tools you have access to. I pulled a few 4g63 engines/trans by myself by raising the front of the car and sliding them out the bottom. Maybe its just an axle though, im more of an engine guy so wait for more advice before tearing into anything.

Sounds to me like its clutch and component area issue. because when you push clutch in it goes away. Borescope would allow you to get a real good look before having to pull trans I would think. It's definitely in the clutch, fork, throw out bearing or pivot ball area. My guess is it the clutch with the vibration issue. Sorry :|

Thanks for the input guys, I will be checking my throw out bearing tomorrow. Another question though, would the throw out bearing cause the droning sound coming from the car while cruising and the metal-on-metal sounds when I am coasting to a stop? I was thinking that issue could have been my brakes being always partially engaged, but I disassembled my brakes on all 4 points of my car and everything checked out. I wouldn't be surprised if there's more than one issue with my car, but maybe this one bearing is reaping havoc.

Throw out bearing is most likely the whining noise which stops when you press clutch. The vibrating while moving could be many things like CV joint, propeller shaft components, wheel bearing, bent brake rotor, stuck caliper, rear diff oil starved, etc. Is the vibration there at 40-50 mph while in neutral whether clutch is engaged or not?

The vibration is at cruising speeds, no matter if the clutch is engaged or not, which lead me to believe it was the brakes. I also thought it was the carrier bearing was a suspect, but it seemed to be fine when I checked the drive shaft and t-case/rear differential. Is there a way to test the carrier bearing without dropping the driveshaft, or does it need to be dropped to inspect the bearings thoroughly?

No, it lessens when I'm out of gear and just coasting, but the unnatural vibrating is definitely still noticeable. Something worth noting that I forgot to include is that when I'm accelerating up to speed, the vibrating gets more pronounced in higher gears. In 1st-2nd gear the vibration is there but not too bad, but once I get into 3rd-5th it sounds like the whole car is going to fall to pieces.

I haven't had this problem with my DSM, but I have had it with Chevrolets, where the driveshaft has lost a balancing weight and it is horrible to try to drive not to mention hard on u-joints and bearings in the trans and rear dif. I know it will be hard to tell. On other cars, I would look for a place where a spot weld looks like it is but for no reason on the driveshaft....that is where a balancing weight would have been. Just tossin that out there to consider.

All mounts are in good condition, I am pretty certain of that. I will be dropping the driveshaft along with the transmission once I get my garage cleared out, so once that happens, I'll update you guys. Thanks again for all the help so far!

Useful tip on front axle removal:
You don't have to remove the axles from the hubs at all (leave wheel nuts on). You also don't have to remove ANY ball joints! Just unbolt the 2 lower arms at the chassis end (READ THIS proceedure: http://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/awd-drivers-axle-help.462647/#post-153254703) and remove the damper fork bolt and the entire assembly will swing out far enough to pull the axles out of the tranny (pry axle out the first inch with a flat blade screwdriver between the inner CV housing and tranny on each side of that housing 180 apart). Move tranny axle end out of tranny and down where it won't bump into anything. Here the control arms, damper fork, and driveshaft are shown disconnected: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=142961&d=1343792826.

Sorry for the absence guys, some things popped up in life that needed attention and the car got put on the back burner. I just got the transmission dropped and the throw out bearing was cracked in half! Time to put everything back with the new OEM part and see what magic happens. Thanks all, for your help!

I had this happen the first and only time I used an aftermarket TOB.
