A bit lengthy but trying to give y'all the whole story so you have an idea of where I'm coming from.

Alright, so a few weeks ago i pulled the motor out of my car (friend helped) so that i could get rid of my non functioning ABS, clean up all the wiring, fill in all the unused holes on the firewall and repaint the engine bay. Anyway, when i purchased the car the guy i bought it from mentioned that he thought the bottom end might be built but was unsure. So tonight i decided to pull off the turbo and FP exhaust manifold so i can send it out to get coated. While i was at it i decided to pull the oil pan to see if the bottom end was built. To my delight i could see (with a mirror and flashlight) that the rods had eagle stamped on the side, were H-Beams and were installed with ARP hardware. Im not able to tell what kind of pistons they are from the backside but it is the normal 88mm stroke. I know that the head is ported from when i had to replace a leaking intake manifold gasket and that there is a set of cams in the car with ARP head studs. Not sure of the turbo that came on the car but the seller mentioned that it may be a slowboy 50 something trim with adjustable internal waste gate.

Ok so heres my issue, i know that the car is pretty strong from when i had it running before, did a few 3rd gear pulls while tunning (or attempting to). DSMlink said somewhere in the 500hp range, not sure how accurate that is or if its wheel or crank hp, but its definitely fast and hung around 22psi.

(got off tract sorry)

Ok so should i pull the head to see what pistons are in the motor and while I'm at it change the timing belt and tensioner or leave it be and press on? Timing belt is little beyond my knowledge, I'm sure i can figure it out, but just not sure if the time and money would be worth it just to see what pistons i have. What do y'all think?

Also any info on the slowboy turbo would be greatly appreciated, all I've found is that its basically 1 step up from a Chineese knock off and there crap. i plan on going with a HX35 or 40 since I've read great reviews about them. just haven't found one with the money yet.

U may be able to pull your spark plugs and with a flashlight try to see if u can make out the surface of the pistons. Look for something stamped on it. Beats removing the head unless something is wrong with it.

Regarding the timing components if your unsure on maintenance I would replace with oem parts for peace of mind.

Sounds like you have a solid foundation! Good luck!

Yeah i tried that but the whole is to small to really get a good idea. I agree that i have a solid foundation to build on. thanks for the help, and i probably will just replace the timing components for piece of mind

Just stick a borescope down the spark plug tube and you will see the piston tops. Would be a lot easier/cheaper then pulling the head.

You my friend are a genius!!! Not sure why i didn't think of that, i borescope Aircraft engine on a regular basis. Thanks of the Help.

I have not seen a set of aftermarket piston not have the piston manufacturer's name in easier lettering on the underside of the crown. You should be able to easily see the name. Factory pistons are pretty cheap looking and would be easy to distinguish as well.

That should have read raised lettering, not easier lettering.
