probably a dumb question but, my 96 fwd tsi had power when I began working on it. I currently have the engine and transmission out of the car. when I connect pattern power nothing comes on (headlights, dash, etc). Does this mean there is something wrong in the harness or will the car not show power if certain electrical components are not plugged in?

Depending on how long the engine has been out of the car could your battery have possibly discharged down zero volts? Or possibly just forget to hook the battery back up since you were doing pretty heavy maintenance on the car the battery should have been disconnected. Then again you can also check fuses.

So far I charged the battery all the way back up to 100%, I connected the positive and negative terminals I made sure I cleaned off all the connections, and I've checked all of the blade fuses and everything looks good. When I turn the key on I don't get anything no power on the dashboard Or anything. I'm wondering if there is some sort of ground or something really important obviously that I'm forgetting that's not connected. What else would I need besides power and ground from the battery?

i checked the whole box but I'm going to check it again and make sure

Is your starter ground wire grounded?

Make sure your grounds go to the body, if there are none then that is why nothing will power up. Most of the grounds go to the motor/trans so just making sure you have a good body ground is all.

Figured it out boostedmm17 you were right. Checked the started wire and there's a big ground that wasn't connected to anything. Everything lit back up and functions as normal now thanks guys
