As title says. I have had this car for a few months now and have absolutely zero knowledge when it comes to cars. I am loving the car though. It has about 166k miles on it and is in a slightly beat up shape, not to mention no paint. I am looking for advice on parts, pieces, and performance. So any advice I get would be great. The suspension is fine (just got it fixed). It has a 420a in it and I am just looking for a way to bump up the power to around the 200-300 range. 140 just seems a bit underwhelming to me. I am going to link a few photos I have taken so I will explain them. Keep in mind that as far as I know, every part of the car except for the spoiler should be original. Overall the thing is pretty filthy including the seats. I tried to clean em for a while but those marks were not coming out.

1. This was a photo I had taken when I first got the car. The windshield was busted (now fixed). There is no paint. The skirt on the other side is black and is now gone..... The spoiler is also gone due to personal choice and the fact that I backed up into a truck.... If possible I would like to put a body kit on it, but every single road that leads to anywhere from where I live has speed bumps on it. So if I was looking for a body kit it cannot be too low. I don't necessarily care about the look as much as the performance. I was originally planning on just making it run well and doing nothing to the outside.

2. would not upload it was just a more recent photo.

3. The passenger side fender is like as is in the photo and the headlight cover is F**ked.

4. Small patches like this are all over the car. I don't know what they are but assume that they are just scratches. As mentioned before most of the side skirt is gone.

5. Would not upload too big. Just showed a hit on the bumper.

6. The back of my car is basically a mess. When I backed into the truck not only did the spoiler rip off, but it also caused some tearing in the steel. I have been trying to find a new hatch but can't in my area. The bolts are to make sure rain cannot get in until I fix it.

7. Other side. About the same. I forgot to mention that giant patch of rust in the middle? It was covered in bondo I took it off.

8. Patches of rust like this kind of like #4

9. Interior is good nothing about that. The passenger side lock will not open every once and a while and the passengers cannot put the window down because the button sinks down into the panel.

10. The front bumper looks like it is corroding? Not sure? The guy I bought it from says he has a fiberglass bumper for me. Is that worth switching?

11. Sorry about it being so dar.k. That is what the engine looks like right now, completely covered in dirt from the three years it was standing still before I got it.

Welcome. First off everyone on here will tell you to sell it and get a GST/GSX because it takes less money to make the power you are looking for. To get a reliable 300hp out of the 420a you will need to build the engine and turbo it. Then you have engine management you have to worry about to run it properly. There is plenty to read here and on 2GNT. Everything you are trying to do is well documented on both sites.

Having been through the whole process on my 420a (check out my build thread) I would have been better off selling it early on and getting a GST or GSX. Don't get me wrong, I love my car esp now that its turboed but for less money I could have had the same thing.... get what I'm saying? I learned alot through the whole process so I don't regret it. These cars are money pits no matter what way you slice it.

As body kits go... you will get hazed for it on here. As far as performance goes no body kit really has any aerodynamics work behind them so I would argue that there is hardly any performance gain with a majority of them. The silver eclipse at the top left in the DSMtuners logo is Andrew Brilliant's car. That car has an aero kit with actual aerodynamics work put into it.

1. I already know of the whole "just sell the car thing" I just like this car a lot and there are not ANY GST or GSX near my area.
2. The whole body kit thing is just something I need to fix. Like I said, the side skirt on the passenger side is gone and the front bumper is corroding. Its not like I want to switch them, its just that I probably should since half of it is a wreck.
Oh and nice you are from Mass? I am from Boston myself. Not there anymore but I did love it. Currently in NM. Love the scenery.

on a absolutely base car with nothing but the stock parts? Is that even going to be a small bit safe :D

Well this isn't the Fast & The Furious, your passenger floorboard won't fall out heh.

If you want fast + cheap it'll be the best way to do it, safety is a different story.

Before doing any modifications, you'll want to verify your motor is in good healthy shape.

Also, do your maintenance like water pump, radiator, oil change, timing belt, etc

You'll also need to run colder plugs but there's no cheaper way to make a decent amount of power, other than Nitrous. I got my new kit for $440 shipped on eBay.

It's called the Sniper Kit so you can run 35 - 55 - 75 shots.

https://www.holley.com/products/nitrous/efi_systems/sniper_universal_nitrous_wet_kit/parts/07005NOS

A quote from the page:
The EFI kits are designed for use with engines that are basically stock.

So that should answer your question

Regardless of which brand you go with, make sure you get a Wet Nitrous kit.

I did blow up my 98 RS Transmission spraying Nitrous but it was fun while it lasted. Then I rebuilt the transmission & upgraded to a GST (still kept the RS though as a backup)

I didn't have any engine problems while spraying FWIW.

But my engine was rebuilt prior to me purchasing my 98 RS.

300HP will be out of the question without building the motor, but I did spray 35 - 55 and 75 on a stock 98 RS motor with 150k miles.

My only other mods were, Cold Air Intake, MSD ignition, Megan Racing Headers, Cat delete.

I can tell you, I spent more $ on the cold air intake, MSD ingition, headers & cat delete and I felt a lot more power from the Nitrous.

To this day the car runs great, when my transmission broke I was spraying Nitrous in first, second, 3rd and 4th (it's an auto and it took a great amount of abuse.)

I'd only recommend spraying in 3rd and up. A nice 75 shot will leave a nice smile on your face.

I had to upgrade my brakes because Nitrous makes power all through out the power band.

So with any significant power upgrade, you'll have things break, and you will have parts that need to be swapped.

If you have any other questions let me know!

I'd keep the RS, put a Nitrous kit on it, and wait to find a decent 1 or 2G GST/GSX

2 cars is always better than 1, especially older DSMs with 150k miles, things will & do break from time to time.

The great thing is we have a lot of knowledgable people on this forum that will give you wonderful advice free of charge.

But forget hitting 300HP on your RS unless you Turbo + Nitrous it. In which case, it would be cheaper to buy a GST/GSX & just swap injectors, fuel pump, turbo, add ECMLink & you'll be very happy.
