So let me introduce myself a little.
I'm brandon, I have purchased myself a 1990 1G Eclipse GS-T, 174k miles and needs some loving. I am replacing the head gasket, valve cover, thermostat and hub assemblies at the moment.

So in the question (s), I removed the turbo and found shaft play, not that bad, but it's some play. Should I do the upgrade to a 16g or keep this stock one. Also should I go with a fmic or keep the small stock one. I'm new to DSMs and I'm not looking for crazy power (at the moment), just want to get it driveable!

Congrats on the purchase, a lot of what you're asking depends on your budget and goals. You said drivable so I would say as far as turbo just rebuild stock one and get it back on the road. If later you want turbo upgrade I'd look into 20g. Streetable and makes good power.

My budget is pretty much whatever, like I said I don't want crazy power because I know it would require a rebuild. I'm basically just taking everything apart, cleaning and replacing things.

Taking the head to get resurfaced at a shop here in town. Going to sandblast and repaint the valve cover, get new couplings for the intercooler/intake and probably a new radiator. (Old one has dents and looks horrible) I was also going to replace the fuel pump as well and check the fuel lines. I'll create a build thread soon!

And pauley, yeah I just tried again and it's slight side to side so I'm assuming it's fine because it pulled smooth, has a slight leak at the oil feed though so I need to figure that out

Do not sandblast the valve cover. You'll get sand in the baffles and youll never get 100% of it out unless you remove the baffle.

Take care of all maintenance needs first, Timing belt, tensioner pulley's, balance shaft belt, oil pump belt, all hoses and any leaking gaskets. Probably a good idea to get a new Hydraulic tensioner also.
