First off, apologies if this has been discussed prior. I've been looking for days on here and couldn't find anything clear or specific enough to understand and didn't want to revive 6 year old posts to ask questions on it.
I have a '99 420a Eclipse automatic with 177xxx on the motor with tons of problems I'm not even going to bother to list. I originally wanted to just fix it up and "restore" it back to base engine, but I decided to go the turbo route. (Yeah buying a GSX/ST is cheaper/easier/m00r p0wer I get it but I don't feel like buying a second project car after just purchasing this one, especially since I don't plan on reselling this car, ever, especially if I built it. And I want the experience).
The transmission is what I'm stumped at. My current one is throwing codes, goes into limp mode occasionally and leaking. I was going to go through some troubleshooting steps I found here: http://www.allpar.com/fix/trans.html , but now I'm wondering, if I have to make a more capable engine to handle boost, I have to do the same for the transmission too, right? So should I even bother trying to fix it if I have to have a "better" one?
Well I can't seem to find any valuable/clear information or lists anywhere on where I'm supposed to start/what I'm supposed to do to get a more robust transmission for a decent turbo build, or if someone even makes one specifically for 420aT's, or maybe I'm having a major blond moment . I've seen some posts about swapping a 420a auto trans with a GST trans, looks like it could go either way though. GSX I know for sure is out of the question. Even saw some Neon ideas but not sure if that's a good route. Kind of just want something a bit stronger that will work with handling decent boost that just bolt right up nice and easy, that's probably asking for a lot though haha . I do not plan to do a manual swap by the way, I couldn't care less for the whole auto vs manual thing.
Uh, where to start with the trans?
