Well, my 16year old wanted a 97-99 GSX. Being the good dad I found him one so now the fun starts I guess. I'm a Mustang guy (15GT 50th Ann car) but these DSM cars are pretty mean! We got some work to do, oil leak down the back of the motor and general clean up to bring it back to its glory. I'm an aircraft jet tech so I should do ok with it but I'll have to learn from you guys also. Thanks in advance!

Well if you just bought him the car common maintenance is as follows;
1. CHECK FOR BOOST LEAKS/VACUUM LEAKS. It's capitalized because 90% of the problems you will face will probably be a boost leak/vacuum leak.
2. Shuddering, bogging, or misfires? First check plugs and wires. Ngk Bpr6es copper plugs and Ngk wires will never hurt. If it's not that; BOOST LEAK. Other possible culprits is Tps, Maf, and Cas sensors. Check the knock sensor for gooey crud on the back of it.
3. Our cars like synthetic motor oil, our transmissions love OEM Mitsubishi Gear oil (GL-4) or Redline. Syncromesh is popular but some will argue against it. Last but not least, if your son respects his car the car will respect him. These cars have a mind of their own I swear.... Ask me how I know.... But HAVE FUN!

Thanks for the info. I really stressed to him about caring for a vehicle expecially this one. I'm sure I'll pull my hair out at times but he'll either learn the smart way or the hard way$$$.
