Milpitas, California
Hi all. I've got an odd transmission problem. Haven't found it listed (no guarantee I didn't miss it, of course).

Car is a '91 Talon AWD 5 spd. Totally stock. About 170k miles. San Jose, CA area. (Milpitas, actually.)

Trans made a slight whine/howl going down the freeway. Got home, pulled the end cover off the trans, since it had that "move in 5th gear shifter wiggle", and I thought it might have a nut touching the inside cover. No such luck. Both nuts were slightly loose, but what got my attention was the intermediate shaft(?) (the middle one) was wobbly. I could see that the back of that gear was shaving aluminum from the inner case surface. Tightening up the nuts didn't help. Re-installed the cover to move the car so I could work on my truck.

Months later, I decided to see if the bearing could be replaced, having read that it could be done without yanking the trans out. Turns out the bearing isn't the problem, near as I can tell. Pulled the gear and other stuff off the shafts, and could see that the tapered roller bearing looked ok, so no reason to pull the inner case.

The problem appears to be the failure of whatever holds the shaft from shifting end to end. I've looked at the photos I can find, but still haven't figured out what could have enabled so much free play (1/8 inch, maybe). Snap ring, thrust washer, shims broken? No idea. Anyway that trans will have to come apart, and I'm not going to bother.

However, when I tried to replace the parts so I could move the car again, I discovered I have no neutral. Shifter wouldn't go into the 5th/rev gate, and it is in gear, although I have no idea which gear. Pulled the cover back off, and played with the shifter fork setup for rev/5th, but cannot get neutral. Even with the shifter indicating neutral, the trans is still in a gear, or even two, perhaps.

I DO NOT have time to screw with this car right now. My truck has a problem that has to be resolved NOW. The car HAS to move out of the driveway. Any suggestions/assistance?

Depress the clutch and have someone push the car. Even if the transmission is in gear you'll be able to move it. Or put a hammer, brick, etc on the clutch pedal while you push it

The driveway has a slope, and so does the street. IF it rolls, that would get it out of the driveway, but would end up parked probably two houses down the street to get it to the curb. Working on it there would not be acceptable, or legal, for that matter. Getting it back into the driveway would require a tow truck, and removing the driveshaft, as it would have to be disconnected from both axles, not just the rear one.

Just checked, and there is no curb space downhill, as this is trashbin night, for tomorrow pickup.

I have an adjustable hoodprop holding the clutchpedal in, no problem there. I can rotate the right front axle very slowly with a large prybar, and can watch the trans shafts rotate, so that would seem to indicate that only one gear is engaged, currently.

Since no one has offered any tech advice for the problem, it looks like I am forced to swap in my spare trans. Didn't want to get into working on the car, as I had intended to sell it. Not going to have the time to add the matching engine, unfortunately. I think. We'll see. Got an engine and trans and t-case from a wreck with 100k miles, some years ago.

Starting the swap as soon as I get done steam cleaning engine bay and undersides...

If interested in buying the car, let me know. No, that engine and other parts will not be for sale separately. Well, not until the car sells! Package deal, perhaps.

Not today. Just got back from bank and parts store. Someone tried to raid my bank account, according to the bank clerk, so the bank deleted my card. Had to order front axles (blown boots) and clutch assy to do a proper job. I can't stand to do shlock work. Still contemplating adding the motor to this swap. After I get the trans out, I'll decide. Original engine has poor compression, about 80psi cranking. Needs a valve job, as the oil test made no difference in pressure. On'y ran it for a couple months after passing smog (new cat), when the trans problem came up.
I suspect that the turbo is not original, as it felt fairly tight on the shaft. This was my father's west coast car. He had identical cars on each coast, as he spent time with family in each area. Originally from the PA/NJ/NY area. Supposedly garage kept before he acquired it, probably with broken timing belt. Buying and selling them was a working hobby for him. No body rust, just some surface corrosion on hardware under the car.

Car is the standard white body with black roof. Leather interior. Comes with two sets of oem wheels. Original white, and gen2 in silver. I forget what year car they came from.
