What housings are the hx40 failing on? Stock or Aftermarket units? Could there be a material difference in the housings allowing materials to break off (due to heat) and enter the turbine causing a premature failure?

Just my thoughts on the topic.

I've noticed that some bep housings are machined too thin in the entry of turbo blade. I had to grind some material away because it was starting to crack.

Bringing this back to life:

I have a Bolt-On HX40@29psi

The turbine wheel failed on my Holset for the 2ND! time two days ago. The first HX40 was bought brand new, and the turbine broke after about 500 miles. The turbo was disassembled, and turbine wheel had failed. Oil was not an issue, the bearings were perfect. I swallowed at got a new assembled center section from my local authorized Holset distributor. Went on to make about 520awhp on a dynojet at 29psi. This turbo held up for about 5,000-10,000 miles. It just failed while doing a pull. Makes me never want to run a Holset again!

My diesel repair shop's theory is that the turbo just isn't happy at such a high rpm shaft speed that happens when in use on our applications... Idk... I'm really pissed...

FYI, 7 years later, this happened because I was running way too small of an oil drain tube. As soon as I upgraded from 14mm ID to 19mm ID, never had an issue, was a great turbo.

The .55 BEP housings are most prone to failure for the Holset. I switched to a .70 ar T3 housing and have pushed this HX40 to just shy of 40 psi. I broke 2 in the .55 housing but I am on E85 which is much hotter going through that small hole making things glow. In my new housing, so far so good. Attached is a log from a pull the other night.
