Hey everyone, here is my dilemma; I believe the synchro rings are going out in the transmission, I rarely can downshift into 2nd without grinding unless at low rpms, and since I've owned the car (6+ months) I've not been able to downshift into first without grinding, at all. My uncle said it's be better to replace it since it must come out to overhaul it anyway. Can anyone give me any opinions? I don't have access to post in the classifieds yet, otherwise I'd have an wtb ad up in there.

I'm not sure what you're asking. I replaced the synchros in my 1g a decade ago, and I don't remember it being difficult. You could just try and find a replacement transmission locally through craigslist or a Facebook dsm group.

Yeah I've noticed there's quite a few DSMs who are still active out in washington, I would say that if any of them see this, it's more then likely they'll have spares sitting around (most of us do LOL )

Thank you Vegas ,I realize my post probably sounded better in my head. I guess I'm asking if it'd be cheaper/easier to rebuild or try and hunt one down. My uncle's opinion is to just replace the whole thing as opposed to rebuild.

Boostdawd, is $500 a fair asking price or would you try and find a cheaper one (I'm thinking $500 is decent, considering these cards are 26+ yrs old)

My vote is that it's probably cheaper and most certainly easier to replace the whole thing. My advice though is to do your homework and make sure you're getting one from somewhere/someone who seems trustworthy. Last thing you want to do is replace one problem trans with another problem trans...

For a known good trans, $500 is certainly fair.

Yeah, I would say it's certainly more cost effective to just replace the entire transmission, but a piece of advice, if you have a 1g check the spline count if you aren't buying a matching transfer case. there are 21 spline, 22 spline, and 23 spline trans/transfer cases.

22 and 23

Adjust the clutch before you go spending money

Like said, a used tranny is a used tranny...with possibly the same problem as the one you're replacing.

The one I have had the best luck with over the years is a used tranny that I disassembled and sent the gearshafts to Jacks transmissions to be rebuilt. I then shimmed them using the procedure in the FSM to tolerances that I found on the forums. (I think they were Jack's recommendation) I think it cost me around $600-700...

Since the op already has a trans its even cheaper.
Im biased but i wont buy a trans to replace a working /notbroken trans. I'd fix what i have. It's very tedious but not especially difficult. But FIRST make sure the problem is actually the trans. I remember years and years ago spending 2 mins helping somebody, who was convinced his trans was bad, adjust a clutch. A few min later we did a 1 2 shift HARD. Problem solved.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Jack's is still out of the DSM game?? Still some other shops with good reputations building tranmission's for our cars though. If you're willing to spend the extra money look into TMZ and TRE. To the point above, this is the best way to KNOW you're getting a reliable transmission...

I will adjust clutch before anything else, I did change the master and slave two weekend ago, shifts better but I have not been able to adjust it yet...
I agree with Pauley about fixing the trans vs replacing it. My uncle has mechanic experience, and would be the one tohelp me do the work, he said to replace it. Im glad to be hearing everyone's two cents on the matter.

To turn the master rod easily wiggle the pedal with one hand and adjust with the other. No need for pliers etc. I usually test drive first then tighten the jam nut.

Had the same problem on my 95, no questions asked I swapped my 97 trans in.

Half way through I found the shift cable bracket was loose.(had the car only 4mnths) Seeing as someone else just did the build before I bought it. I got Boost leaks and a bunch of loose bolts.

But anyway, it started at 1st and 2nd then progressively got worse. Especially any gears that were forward 1st, 3rd and 5th. I wasn't shifting fully into gear just floating(more like carving) the syncros.

Just a quick check before you go over haul or anything cause I swapped it for no reason pretty much. Just decided to go through with it cause I grinded syncs for 4-5mnths.
