i have a 1997 mitsubisi eclipse gs 5 speed it shifts in to 1 3 5 fine but if you try to shift quickly into 2 4 r it will not catch if you shift slow it will catch also the shifter moves much farther back than it used to but still moves forwad like it should all the linkage and cables look fine any help will be greatly appreciated i just hope its not the tranny

Watch the shifter cables at the tranny while someone shifts (car off) to see if the casings move (they shouldn't) and how far the levers move in 2,4,r. The hold downs may have gotten loose. Also if casings or shifter moves under the stick shifter itself. Otherwise you may have an internal tranny problem (usually worn bearings causing too much input/intermediate shaft end play). Or broken like spyderdrifter says.
