My top looked like garbage. I don't know what hell this top suffered in the past, but it bore the scars like a badge of honor. There were some splotchy light areas all over it.

When I first got this car I tried to clean it only to find that no, this will not be done away with so easily. So I tried using a heavy mix of RIT dye and super hot water (just off boiling). It didn't take. It just washed out. Failure.
So I started looking for owners who had used Plasti Dip on a canvas top. Not much info out there on that. I did find a few where owners with vinyl tops had tried it, but that is so different compared to canvas that I really couldn't use any of that info.

I decided to be the guinea pig. Here's the how to and how it turned out. Now yes, I do know that it didn't turn out "like new". That's OK, it looks worlds better than it did. We'll have to revisit this to see how it holds up.

So the Plasti Dip made a world of difference cosmetically, but didn't really seal up the canvas completely. It did make a notable difference in the amount of water in the car after a rain, so I have since sprayed a heavy coat inside the back third of the top. I haven't had the opportunity to see if it helped yet. The drips in the back below the rear glass turns out, was because the rear glass was just about to fall half way out! I just glued it back in today. It still needs to be completely sealed up though. What a pain! Still, better than spending a Grand on having a new top installed, but maybe not better than $300 or so and installing it myself.

Just a fun video of running a hose on the newly Dipped top.

The "real" test. I still need to hit inside the front half with a heavy coat of Plasti Dip to see if it will help with the seepage into the side channels of the frame (all that water that dumps onto our lap when we start driving after or during rain). Looking at how the factory top is made, it looks like the outer layer is (obviously) canvas, then there is a middle layer of something (foam?) that has turned to grimey dust and then another inner layer of thin fabric that has also lost it's integrity with time.
