I joined the forum ages ago, but never bought a DSM. I had a 460 whp EM1 Si in college and that was the last time I was into the import scene. Now I ask for advice from you guys as to what I should look for when trying to buy one.

Knowing how fun these cars are, I have always wanted a 97-99 GSX. I drove a 20g turbo YEARS ago and it was the first turbo car I had ever driven at that time...set me back harder than my current CBR.

I hope to find one that someone has built up (I just don't want to mess with a build, and don't have the time for it). I know I want one with a 6 bolt motor, but I am going to have to re-educated myself (somewhat) about DSM's.

Here is a pic of my Civic that got stolen in Vegas years ago:

You definitely won't be disappointed once you find one! It took me 5 years to find the one I wanted...But it was well worth it :hellyeah:

DSM's are for those who like the DIY type of lifestyle. They're really rewarding when done correctly and properly mantained. They're by no means unreliable as so many people make them look. It's bad maintenance and the Fast & the Furious scene that has brought so many ricer boys and people with tacky tastes that have ruined so many DSM's. Mine works like clockwork and I only do basic maintenance to it. It's all in the setup, realistic expectations about your build (if it can handle the power you want), good fuel and a proper tune.

Now for wanting to buy an already built car, it's really a coin toss. Knowing exactly what your car has and how it has it will really help you on the maintenance of these cars. It's very difficult to get into that groove with someone elses build as they have a way of doing something and you might have another. Either way, keep in mind the rust on the strut towers and on the underside near the B pillars. Good luck in finding one and hope you enjoy it.

In my opinion if they don't know the maintenance history on it, you don't want it. Most people who actually have running cars are meticulous about maintenance. If you want something that isn't going to grenade, find one that was maintained well.

what doubleclutch said, don't buy a cat in a bag, meet up with the person selling it and get as much of the history behind the car, especially the reason they're selling. if they were serious about the car they'll be able to tell you everything about it.

2nd gen with a 1st gen block and 2nd gen head. Make sure your 97-99 has a 1st gen block already. You don't want the deadly crank walk. You can always go the ez route and get a 1st gen and swap the head. Good luck show us what you get.

I may be mistaken but late 97 through 99 had the crankwalk issue "fixed". Not to mention the argument that crankwalk was potentitally a way overblown issue by people who bought V8s and lost to DSMs so they had to come up with some reason to justify them not buying one. "I would buy a DSM but I don't want crankwalk, bruh"

Hey guys I was actually looking st buying a gsx. If anyone knows one that is for sale in good condition would be traveling to pick up so would have to talk on price. Does Everything on a 2nd gen engine bolt up to a 1st gen block the same? and what about the internals?
