So I'm getting closer and closer to building the motor for my eclipse, my end goal I would love to hit 9 seconds, I'm guessing that's somewhere in the 600hp range, obviously I dont plan on hitting this as soon as I drop in the motor. I would like for it be able to handle it though. I've been reading all the posts I can find and I feel like I'm right on the edge of needing a I-beam rod. Does this sound right? I was thinking map rods or turbo tuff. If you all feel a h beam will do me fine that would be great news but I don't want to test the limits its not a budget build I want this car to last. If h beam will work I planned on scat rods. Ideas?

Still trying to do some digging for answers but nothing super clear that I can find for my goals I see alot of people suggests eagle rods, for some reason eagles has me a little worried some people say they are great other say not so much.

Sounds like your build plan is close to mine. Ive been teetering on eagle/manley H beams or turbotuffs, and im leaning toward the TT's just for extra room. Seems like all the H beam rods are not recommended over the 600hp mark. Some have done it and more prolly will, but i like the security of an overbuilt rod that wont snap if the car happens to misfire or dead fire.

What are you building? 2.0, 2.4, 2.3, 2.1? Aside from hp, rpm limit and piston dwell would be my main concern factors when looking at rods. Longer piston dwell times and lower acceleration rates tend to be gentler on rods (think high rod ratio).

Well I was thinking of a 2.4 for a while with the auto, I dont think I will be revving it that high so I was tossed on a 2.0 vs 2.4 but I think I'm back to a 2.0 build. I think the tt might be better too I like having reliability. What do you think about a auto and 2.0? I haven't dug to far into the shift box for the autos so I'm not sure if I can set shift points to rev the 2.0 up higher.

Im not as familiar with the autos, but i beleive you can get them to go up to 9500? If you have an auto, id go 2.4, youll be able to get on the converter and build boost sooner, plus launching an auto is cake. Im a 5 speed so im doing a 2.1 for the sliver of displacement and better piston dwell/rod ratio.

There are alot of guys running the 2.0/auto combo making boatloads of power, but usually nitrous is used for spooling on the line.

I think youre on the right track with the TT's, the extra money is worth it at that point. They're a little heavy, but as long as you use a race bearing for a higher rpm motor they seem to be ok. "weight is sign of reliability" ?

I wanted to stay away from nitrous now im back to thinking of a 2.4 haha. I think im convinced now on the tt rods. Im not to up to speed on the autos my last was a 5 speed, but for 300 bucks for the car i guess a auto will do! Im also debating on building my own motor im definitely mechanically capital of building a motor and have, just never a 4g63 motor but i like the satisfaction of knowing i did the work myself i have a 13 second cummins and i did all the work minus the transmission. Plus the money saved would be great i just need to now find a machine shop that has some knowledge with these motors i dont want to just trust a napa.

Yea i personally thing a 2.4 auto would be filthy. As far as building the motor yourself, theres another way?? Haha, i build all mine, and so far i have a long list of zero failures. 4g63/4's arent really any different, id say the oiling system and timing belt need the most attention during a build. Keep it clean as always, and look up all the oil mods, there should be 3 or 4. 2.4 timing can be a touch harder, but i believe extremepsi has 2.4l belt kits to take the guess work out, and adjustable gears are a useful piece to get.

Sounds like itll be a fun car for sure, ill be tuned in when you start the build thread!
