Is there a good document somehow to understand tubor sizes and what they mean? I bought a GST with a crappy turbo and I'm doing research on different brands, but I don't know what a GT30 is compared to a GT35 compared to a GT40 for example. The 30/35/40 seems consistent with every brand. Is this number the millimeters of the compressor, or is it something else?
Thank you my friends, sorry for the noob question, but I'm learning quickly about these cars and how they operate.

Not really- every brand has their own nomenclature so there's little-to-no consistency between sizes. Like the Garrett GT35R is actually closer in size to a Holset HX40 than a HX35. There's no one site that will show you all of the available brands and sizes in order that I know of....especially with new models being introduced regularly. You just kinda have to do research and figure it out for yourself, unfortunately.

Bummer. I was hoping for more consistency, but what can ya do? :p
BTW how does Forced Performance size their turbos? They have Red, Green, and Black. I have a FP Black in my drag car, but I just got a FP red for another GST I'm fixing. Not sure how the red compares to black, etc

Kinda answered your own ? there, haha. Theyre just that, the color nomenclature is how fp "sizes" them, and looking on their site will give specific wheel sizes for the different versions.

The green is what ive considered a 20-25g on steroids @ 57lb/min
Red is a step above somewhat with a lag increase @ 61lb/min
The black is a large step @ 71lb/min and considerable lag from what ive seen reported and dyno'd. (Even the evos cant get blacks to spool fast with TS housings)

Just my interpretations, but the info you need is on each manufacturers site, and lots of real-world reports on here and other sites. Google is your freind :thumb:

Good question. From what I've seen the current Green doesn't do anything a whole lot better than the 68HTA, and the current Black doesn't do anything a whole lot better than the Red regarding actual logged airflow for the spool compared to what the compressor is rated at. I've never personally witnessed a log of a DSM Black above 60 lb/min, even at 35psi on a built motor with a pile of supporting mods....which is where an Old School Red was nearly two decades ago. I'm sure FP has a method to their madness, but I'm not seeing the true value of either of those two units. If someone comes to me with a specific goal in the market for a new FP turbo, the 68HTA or DSM Red are the only two I really recommend.
