Hey guys,

Im dealing with a no start after a timing belt and water pump change on a 98 gsx.
The car has been sitting for about six months before i decided to finally tackle the job.
I went to turn the car on and it just cranks over. I have done timing jobs on my spyder and other friends dsms before and never ran into this problem. here is where im at,

crank , no start.
p0335
no fuel
no spark
checked 12c power to cps
confirmed mechanical timing
completed compression test as follows (which is surprisingly high)
1 215 psi
2 200 psi
3 210 psi
4 218 psi

I read in a post during my search that a bad vss will cause the cps to not return a signal.b only one person referenced that and I'm not sure how accurate il that info is.
Before i parked the car i had been dealing with a problem with my speedometer. it would jump up and down at times other times it would work just fine and other times it would not work at all. Most of the time it would work tho so it didnt bother me much. Also, when i hooked up the scanner to the car it would never display the vehicle speed. So my question is, is there any truth to that? Could a bad vss cause the cps to malfunction? If so i would rather go after that before the task of changing out the cps

Thanks for the help,

A quick method that I have used to troubleshoot a bad ckp before is to wire in a 1g cas and see if it starts. I usually have 2 or 3 of them laying around, so I was never out any money, and it only takes 3 mins to do it. I have never seen a vss cause a no start, but I won't say it is impossible. They are both in the second harness and share a common power source

Hey guys im sorry for not being able to tend to this sooner i've just been swapped with work these past couple of months. yesterday i replaced the cps with a brand new one and it still wont start. The sensor was intact and did not appear to be damaged at all. i replaced it anyway same symptoms....i have confirmed that there is a 12v getting to the sensor, does that rule out the MFI relay? my next guess is the ecu might be faulty.
Any tips or advice on how to proceed next?

Also, i want to add that the engine cranks easily i have a new battery hooked up to a crank charger so it wont get depleted and the rpm guage does not move at all as the engine cranks over. Thanks for everyones help.

Pulled the ecu...absolutely no smell what so ever. Physically looks good to me but I'll admit I'm not exactly sure what to look for other then the complete obvious. Maybe you can spot something I'm not aware of.

One of the mfi relay clicks while switching the key from on to off and off to on. Is that normal? Only one of them does it. Also I have a 97 auto spyder gst...can I change the ecu to my 98 manual gsx to test it?

Pulled the mfi relays for testing. I applied power to the coils( pins 2 &4) and checked continuity between pins 1 and 3. When powered both relays clicked on and continuity was present. So they're good unless I'm doing something wrong.

Make sure you don't have the crank position sensor on backwards. The reluctor wheel should pass through the sensor. I have seen plenty of people install the sensor backwards and the reluctor wheel doesn't pass through creating no pulse. Double check it and take a picture if need be. With P0335, your list of possibilities is CPS, wiring, ECU. Not uncommon to pinch the wiring around the block, nor like I stated to install the CPS on backwards OR no reluctor wheel.

If you keep getting a crank sensor code then you have to double check your work, something has to be on wrong . car was running before right .
