So I just got done putting my top end back together, and its been about 5 years since I messed with a DSM, I forgot about THAT stud, you know the one, the middle turbo manifold stud that intersects the oil galley. To make a long story short, what do I need to do to seal that bastard off?

My engine is building oil pressure, but its a bit low, and I am spraying oil under revs all over the bottom of the manifold, downpipe, block, and lower intercooler pipe. Its pretty nasty, and makes the car un-driveable.

I know I need to pull the stud out, but I am trying to brain storm an idea of how to do it without tearing to much back apart. I don't think there is enough room to double nut it without pulling the manifold off. Not sure I can do that without dropping the turbo, which means f***ing with the oil return. I know there isn't enough room to double nut the stud coming from the turbo going into the manifold.

Guess that means removing the whole turbocharger assy, unless I can double nut that middle stud from the bottom.

So onto the next part, what to use as a thread sealant? I have some blue Resbond, will resbond with stand oil? Its a very high temp no hardening thread locker. If that is no good, should I go with permatex #2, or get a hardening permatex? If so should I use permatex red, or get some permatex copper?

You can just remove the turbo manifold itself. With power steering in the way it'll be harder. If not that, you can try doing just the stud, and get some thin nuts to double nut it. I've been lucky the couple times doing it and the stud came out with the nut.

I have the same problem on my 97. Luckily it's not terrible and it's mostly stockish as my gf dailies her, but I would like to know as well. I also have two broken studs so eventually I'll pull the head but not anytime soon.
This isn't my project car so I basically just do quick fixes to keep her running. I've used copper rtv on the manifold flange (yes, I know) to help seal up the gaskets (yes, two gaskets), and it actually has held up well, but now I swear by permatex "right stuff" a little more expensive but well worth it. I used this on a pesky oil pan leak and not only does it seal better, it dries in 5 minutes. Obviously the problem with "that stud" is that even if you get it out, it's virtually impossible to create a clean mating surface inside the head. I would squirt some carb cleaner in there and try to swab it clean.
You also have the option of just removing the manifold depending on your setup (if you still have the OEM style stud, probably not), or removing the rad fans and pulling the whole assembly forward a bit And grabbing that stud with some vice grips. I was able to replace a gasket this way, as well as a few studs.

Yeah I hadn't thought about removing the fans and pulling it forward. Don't wanna put that much strain on the oil return pipe though.

If I can't double not that stud out and use a bore brush to clean the hole. I will probably go ahead and pull the whole assy. Yeah I still have the stud, not really a fan of changing the OEM mounting style without a good reason/
