That assessment makes a lot of sense. :D I hate to admit I've had moments like this with cali speced cars.>.>
 
Cool build. Really unique with that electric power steering setup. I am curious though why you went to it over the factory power rack? It was a lot of fab work to make it happen and did it really gain you anything efficiency/power wise? I mean sure you dont have the PS pump to run anymore but that big alternator has to create the extra power to run the electric steering motor which should be close to the same drag on the engine.

Yeah I get the gist, I often see a lot of guys like Alice cooper sitting on the chair taping the cane LOL, but no one really ever swaps stuff in California LOL... well to be fair the select few LOL theres lots of Ford focus cars at the parts yards if you need something let me know.

Actually yes a there's lot of pros heres the list
1: no more p/s fluid to deal with like when pulling the engine etc.
2: less rotating mass on the engine, the drag you speak of is likely around the same if not less, then hydro p/s pump... It's obvious, but even more so when the unit is off like when your at the track or freeway etc. because you can shut the EPS unit off...[I'm not sure If i mentioned the assist switch also shuts the unit off, it takes a few seconds, but it does work]

On a side note: I'm not sure the alternator swap was a must for this swap, I only used it because my old one blew on me, and I happened to have it sitting around, and I did not know If I could rig it to work even LOL, no one has ever used this alternator with the dodge regulator... or at least if they did I did not find any info on this particular alternator used with the regulator.

3: more reliable charging system sort of... one of the reasons the stock dsm/csm alternators get a bad rap for reliability is the common leaking p/s pump [of course the heat from the exhaust manifold being right there could also have something to do with it as well.]

4: less engine bay clutter more engine bay room for a bigger turbo piping etc [if I ever get the 4g63t swap done and have the guts to go bigger LOL]

5: while not really a major thing, but I'll mention it anyway, better weight distribution the p/s pump hangs in front of motor, in front of the axles with the column mount its clearly behind the struts, not sure if it weighs more then the stock unit all things being equal, I ditched the weight of the stock column and the hydro ps pump lines/fluid brackets etc is it the same might be a tad more but more importantly it's behind the struts.

these are just what comes to mind for right now:D

And I had a lot of fun figuring the mounting out [not meant sarcastically LOL], not too out of this world, you just have to take your time [I might even do this to my 1g as well], I filmed a lot of the process might edit it and make a youtube video or 2 LOL.

A rare Volkswagen Scirocco radiator, most csm guys commonly run these when doing the 4G63T swap, or so I have read about them using them in their swaps, I was lucky enough to find it a parts yard nearby.

Looks like you're getting ever closer to the 4g63 being dropped in, any concrete ideas on what you're going to do with the Colt?
 
I can't find used cats in cali...unfortunately all the wrecking yards in California are not allowed to sell catalytic converters, kinda sad but on a brighter note an exhaust manifold is likely available LOL.

As far as the colt goes, it has a lot of tasteful mods already from the p.o most of them are really well done, but it needs some work...well here and there, both cars have their pros and cons, I already pulled the old colt motor out of the car, and I'm putting in the new one in soon, but a few basic maintenance things to get out of the way like, t belt, oil pan seals, filters etc. ,and it will become my daily driver while I work on the 4g63t swap on precious which will no doubt be down whenever that happens, but I'll make another thread for the colt eventually.

These cars are really cool daily drivers good gas mileage [when you drive responsibly LOL] and the stock motors are really easy to work on, for most dsmers its a piece of cake LOL, and the engines weigh around the same as a window air conditioner LOL, and vary few wires to remove to pull the motors from these cars.
 
I realize that it has been a few weeks without any updates on the build, but rest assured a 4G63T swap is in the works it may take time, but I'm confident I can get it done, but I'm doing it in stages, so I can have the whole setup done without missing anything in the process.

So you all may know that over the course of a few weeks I've been hunting for a 6 bolt motor for the "eventual swap" I eventually found one, but as a few of you may know...It sadly had some issues http://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/da...-this-fixable-pictures.505382/#post-153602428 namely with its front mounting bracket bolt holes:ohdamn:...:mad:, And so the hunt continued all over again :rolleyes:...I looked for a while, but for some reason there was a 6 bolt shortage in the valley or something LOL, so I decided to take the build on another route...

Well heres my take on route/plan B, I scored a non-turbo 7 bolt from a 1994 auto 1g dsm freshly plucked from the trunk of my mirage.

Looks to be in decent shape, someone recently replaced the timing belt according to the gates sticker on the upper timing cover, no signs of coolant in the oil, zero signs of crank walk. [and yes I know thats more of a 2g 7 bolt thing... but you never know].

I know that the pistons on the non turbo 1g motors, regardless of 6 or 7 bolt, are fragile, and less forgiving of tunning mistakes, then the turbo versions, so I looked on the web for a solution, and I found a nearby evo 8 part-out, so I got my hands on a set of evo 8 pistons and rods, they had some carbon tracing on the crowns and ring grooves, so some cleaning was in order, but I think they cleaned up nicely. I used brake parts cleaner and red scouring pads.

I found another evo 8 partout and the owner had some bnib unused bits for my build at a steel price, so I got arp head studs and hks t belt.

My mirage started grinding gears, so logically I checked my clutch hydraulic system, and sure enough my slave cylinder gave up the ghost.

Shortly after that my clutch master cylinder gave out...

...But luckily I was smart enough to order a new master cylinder around the same time I replaced the slave cylinder, but I also decided to throw in the mix a stainless master to slave clutch line [from STM Tuned] and I threw out my old unsightly stock clutch hard lines,along with the mushy rubber line.

I procured all these parts from near or local wrecking yards, the side skirts are off of a "97 Nissan Sentra SE they look really close to fitting my mirage [one of them needs to be cut down to fit the length], The scoop and The 2 vents are off a "98 Subaru Impreza wagon, The 2 side ambers I pulled from a "99 saab 9-3, and lastly the mess of wires, and connectors, are for converting my mirage dash harness to a dsm so both dsm and csm wire connectors from various junk cars, so I can make a patch harness [so it will look more stock].

I can't choose... whatever I end up doing I'd prefer it to be functional to some extent , we all know that turbo motors invite extra heat to our engine bays. again all opinions are most welcomed.

I started working on creating a dash adapter harness the other day.
[Mirage Dash wire pigtails on the right, to "91-"94 DSM engine harness on the left]

Eventually, when it's done, I'll make and then post a better diagram of what wire goes where etc, because I'm missing 1 of the DSM dash connectors...I cut and splice them in, but I want a clean install :cool:, so i'm going to get the right wire pigtail soon... I also plan to tidy up the finished product further by using braided flexible wire loom and marine heat shrink tubing.

A new urethane insert for rear motor mount arrived from prothane, part # 13-506-BL.

On the left, we have a set of arp rod bolts, part # 107-6002. On the right we have a set of ACL main and rod bearings, main bearing part # 5M1186H-STD, rod bearing part # 4B1185H-STD, all of these are for the eventual 1g 7 bolt motor build.

I was out at pick and pull, ya know hunting for wire pig tails for the swap, and all of a sudden [score] this showed up ...

You likely guessed it, I pulled the 6 bolt motor from this car, I wish I got there sooner the last guy botched up the wire harness when he pulled the injectors :ohdamn:... why would you even take the injector pig tails? they are a PITA to reincorporate into another car especially considering, in the near future, you will likely have to remove them again... whoever did this please do yourself a favor, and get the connectors off of a "96-"02 dodge caravan, at least then you will get the quick release injector wire pigtails.
I'd be less ticked if he left the rest of the harness Intact, but :banghead: he/she didn't...I digress lets get back to the build.

I found inside the car a recent smog report, and it indicated that the motor had passed California emissions testing, and thats a big plus in my books, I also checked the spark plugs and they all looked good. You can tell whoever owned this 1g, had took really good care of it...too bad it ended up here:(.
The past owner even left a boost leak tester in the trunk of the car, I took it as well [as you can see in the image above]... My thoughts are, I'll use the 7 bolt motor in the red rocket [it already has a flex plate attached for an auto], and then I'll use this 6 bolt in precious since it's all together and ready to go... well maybe after some cleaning LOL.

In other news my :cool: expandable braided wire loom arrived today.
I ordered it in 3 different sizes [all in lengths of 100ft]
3/4 [or 19mm], 3/8 [or 10mm], and lastly 1/4 [or 6mm]

This should help tidy up the engine bay some, I plan to eliminate many of the useless connectors on the dsm harness, and then re-wrap the harness with this, and some marine heat shrink tubing for more protection from the elements.

I built my 7 bolt because I couldn't find a decent 6 bolt at any of the pick and pulls up here near Sac. Looked for a long time. Funny you mention about the harness being hacked up. You see people doing some weird stuff at pick and pull. Nobody cares haha.

Yeah it was the Stockton yard, another odd thing they started doing at the Stockton yard, [not sure if this happens at all yards] but they started charging you $5.00 to use the engine crane...they refund you when you return it to the front of the store, I'm not really complaining about it... the real hassle at this yard is the shortage of wheel barrows, I literally had to wait at the front of the store, there was a line of guys waiting for wheel barrows, my best advice would be, to bring your own wheel barrow, wagon, or dolly cart if you want to get in and out quicker.

I ordered a set of Pico wire pin extractors part # 0660T, to help unpin some wire connectors...well I'll be honest they are good for some pins :(, but I feel like you'd be better off with a steady hand, and a generic straight pick...but we'll see how often I use these, :idontknow: I might need them.

I also ordered a 5 piece terminal kit set, from Astro [pictured above] part number 78445, I'ts on the way now, I hope it's better then the pico set, will update when I have a chance to try them out.

The Astro kit is a lot better, both tool sets are vary fragile [it's to be expected], but the Astro set has 5 tools with stainless handles, they come in/with a plastic storage case, and they work on a lot more components on a 4G63T csm/dsm wire harness, so I guess on a budget the astro 78445 is the way to go... to be fair the pico tools are good quality wise, but the problem I faced is many of the wire connectors I'm working on, will have smaller plastic locking tabs holding the pins in, and it does not help that the smallest pico extractor is still too big in most instances to do the job correctly.
 
Wire un-looming time... I got a lot of work to do on this 1G "90 harness.

After I identified, and marked all the under hood connectors on the 4G63 harness, via masking tape and a sharpie, I pulled all the tubing and electrical tape off the harness.

I'm thinking of adding a wall mounted mil spec connector on the firewall, for a better overall look, and it will make for easier engine changes etc, Also the harness in the pictures above was a freebie that came with my red rocket colt project, it was cut up in a few places, but I located most of the missing connectors and plan to make it useful again.

I aim to delete a few things, for now just the rear defogger relay, A-57 and it's capacitor A-56.
Then I aim to relocate, and mount under the dash, connectors A-58[Injector resistor], B-00 [Tachometer filter], B-15[Ignition power transistor unit].

I might also optionally pull under the dash, or delete, connectors A-55 [Fuel pump check connector]
A-60 [Timing check connector] and A-59 rpm check connector.
