Hey folks, I'm pretty new to the community, and cars in general so go easy on me if im not as savvy as some of you

A while back the motor in eclipse gst messed up bad and i had to have it machined. I dont know what all the machine shop did to it as i didnt know jack shit about cars at the time.

but, its been reassembled by myself so i like to think i know damn near every nook and cranny of that engine now.

now here's my problem, the car will start and "run" but it runs like crap. the rpm needle stays at zero while idling and it massively resists me trying to accelerate it (limping it home from truck after a move). when i put it in first it feels like i shoved it in third, in terms of resistance to acceleration.

it has brand new coil packs, spark plugs, and plug wires so those arent and issue.
tested and replaced the maf thinking that a messed up one was throwing off my a/f ratio. though that didnt help and i most likely didnt perform the test correctly. again im pretty new to all this.

I didnt do the timing while the motor was out of the car and still dont really know how so that may be an issue

cleaned the map sensor and nothing changed

obd scanner throws code for a misfire

any help would be greatly appreciated and let me know if there is any detail you would like me to answer, ill try to the best of my abilities.

thank you for any of your time

You need to start at the beginning. Verify your timing in correct. If you can't do it , find someone who can. Do a visual inspection, take the cam cover off and check if your cam gears line up. Is your compression good? Has it been tested? Your getting good fuel pressure and spark?

I second this suggestion. Our timing belts can be a beast at times to get everything lined up, when you think you got it, you find out you are one tooth off usually the exhaust cam. check everything!

i replaced the crank position sensor with a brand new one, but again im a bit of an amateur when it comes to working on cars so there is a potential of it being installed incorrectly

checked the timing on the cam sprockets so far, the timing marks are would be facing up instead of facing each other. looks like whomever did timing might have done it for the non-turbo 4g63 instead

Turbo and non'turbo 63's are timed the exact same way.

Misfire code. Id say verify all your cylinders are getting spark. Kind of sounds like you have a bad power transitor and are only running on 2 cylinders.

If everything checks out with timing, I would check for vacuum leaks, especially at the intake manifold, fuel injectors and intercooler piping next.

really think its the timing after taking a look at it LOL

You cant tell there. Stick a half inch breaker bar in the crank and rotate it until the cams line up and the #1 piston needs to be at TDC. Take the spark plug out and put a CLEAN extension in there to help you out.

If it was that far off you'd have bent valves and the car wouldn't run.

Edit: TDC means Top Dead Center, or when the piston is at the top of its travel in the cylinder.

between the A and R is the timing mark on the cam gears in the 11 o'clock position, and both pointing in the same direction so if they continued rotating since they are attached to each other by a belt they would never line up and meet in the middle like they should.
Ive also already pull the far right #1 sparkplug and used a long flathead to try to get as near as possible to tdc as i can before i delved into taking off the timing cover and belt, with no such luck in any of the marks lining up.
so im currently taking off enging mount and the timing cover to see the crank timing mark

No it's not. That little line Above the bar on the exhaust side and below it on the intake gear are the timing marks. Go see if they line up with #1 at TDC

ok you are right, after finding out what the cam gear brand was called and seeing pictures of how the A&R ticks should be pointing straight up, there are these faint tick marks that look almost like scratches that pretty much line up, i didnt try hard yet to see if they line up perfectly. and when in this position, piston 1 is nearly if not right at tdc. I also noticed i put the accessory crank pulley for ac and alternator on 180 degrees the wrong way, so the timing mark on it initially wasnt lining up with the marks on the timing cover, which it now does. After seeing this and reading what you guys suggested im going to look into testing and replacing the igniter/ power transistor, since im also reading 0 on the tachometer until I rev it a tad. and it would also be effecting the sparkplugs causing my misfire.

ps. sorry for the tad blurry picture

Is the crank pulley in the correct orientation in relation to the cam gears?

If the crank pully is dead nuts it looks like you are a tooth off. It could be more significant based on the position of the crank

hey fellas, going to try to replace the power transistor and see if that helps at all. there's a pick and pull near by me with a couple of 96 eclipse and i was wondering if those would work for my 97 gst. or would you guys have any other place/website i might be able to pick one up for a good price.

Buy a Jay Racing timing belt kit (or, the Extreme PSI one). It makes doing a timing belt almost idiot-proof, because the cam gear block ensures that the gears are lined up properly.

alright fellas, i replaced the power transistor and it didnt help at all. rpms arent even reading on the tach, and spark plugs are fouled because of the misfire im assuming. before my move it ran fine for a fresh rebuild and it just got progressively worse.

also a little list of stuff i replaced

coil packs
spark plug wires
crank position sensor
power transistor
maf sensor
