I dropped my subframes and control arms at the powder coaters. I spoke with him a bit about the process. I'm excited to see the finished product!

I didn't do a whole lot today. I put an oil filter on the OFH to keep debris out of that area. Then I started cleaning the threads for the water pump.

Next I installed the water pump.

I think I will clean the lifters and cams and get them installed soon.

I started going through my stuff to see what I would bring to the powder coater next. Man do I have some spare parts...

I need to figure out the difference between the 1g dsm front motor mount bracket and VR4. I believe they are different, I don't want to put the wrong one on!

I wasn't really sure what the process was for powder coating, this is when I youtube. Turns out it's pretty easy. Clean parts, powder, bake. Before you know it I ended up with this:

JZMEggl.png

I can save at least that much on all of the miscellaneous parts that I want to coat. I have a buddy that is going to be getting a new oven in the near future, so I will have a powder coating oven! More to come on this project later.

I did a little more prep work to the engine. I started by cleaning out the lifters. There was a bunch of old smelly oil that came out, there didn't look to be any sort of debris which is good.

I didn't have a paperclip so I used a really small drill bit to hit the relief.

I then soaked them in some fresh oil and pumped them clean.

I had the rocker arms lying around in a different bag so I figured i'd just clean them a bit and put them in the stew.

I also cleaned all of the threads for the valve cover. Some of these were in terrible shape with not many threads left. I think I am going to get studs for the valve cover instead of bolts. I don't want to screw up these threads any more than they already are.

I picked up my parts from the powder coater today, they look absolutely amazing!

I'm very happy that I did this. I have a few other bigger parts that I will take to him, the rest I will try to do myself once I get an oven for the garage!

I had to pick up some silicone lubricant for my bushings, as I had to remove them all to get the powder coating done.

9T9sBQp.jpg

Some miscellaneous gaskets and seals came in as well.

DNaLZV5.jpg

Hopefully that isn't the case, but they do look awesome!

The powder coater said he used some kind of tough primer and a form of satin black that has zinc in it, which makes it crazy strong.

He said if it ever needs to be sandblasted again someone is going to have a really bad time.

Yeah, kinda figured. You still planning to attend in the Evo or something?

As a driving car I prefer my STi to an Evo. As a racing car it is opposite.

I would like to go to the Shootout, i've never been. It seems to get put off every year. Maybe this year I will make my appearance!

I mounted the rear diff to the rear subframe and put it back on the car

A5IdwN0.jpg

After mounting it I realized that I didn't put the sway bar on it. Luckily it was easy enough to slip in with everything else out of the way still.

Next I figured I would put the fuel lines in the engine bay where they will be staying and mount up the front subframe!

Gngji5a.jpg

It looks so pretty!

Just checking the clearance while I was hoisting the subframe up. Looks like there will be plenty.

BcAWI4j.jpg

Mounted, here is the clearance out the back of the subframe.

RxCJ9Ip.jpg

All buttoned up! I need to get a throw out bearing, clutch fork, and pivot ball and the motor and transmission should be able to go in!

What brands are you using for gaskets?

I have to replace a decent amount of part and gaskets because i have a leaking oil pump i believe. And I am torn between felpro and OEM.

-Water pump im going Gates
-Timing Belt probably gates as well.
-Oil filter house gasket: OEM or Felpro?
-Oil pump gasket: OEM or Felpro?
-Front Seal: oem or other not sure if felpro makes one.
-Oil pump will be new from Mitsu

Would love anyone's input.

I had a timing kit from Gates (TCK167). If you get the Gates kit with water pump it was significantly more expensive than buying them individually. The water pump from gates is 42163. I picked up an OEM tensioner as well (MD164533).

I grabbed a Beck/Arnley front case kit from Rockauto. This included the oil filter housing, front case, and both seals for the front case (BECK/ARNLEY 0398016)

I apparently also bought Timken seals for the front case. I discovered those after I had already put the Beck/Arnley seals in so I never used them.

There isn't a gasket for the actual oil pump.

I believe he is talking about the oil filter housing gasket. Many are known to leak there...Weird now that I think about it. But yes, there is one for that. Either brands will do just fine. Just make sure you get copper gasket, in a spray can. Put a few coats on before you install and you will be golden. Ive never had one leak with that stuff.

Thank you for supplying part#'s. Im on a 7 bolt tho so not sure if those translate as well. OEM is just to expensive for simply gaskets. I like the idea of spraying it with cooper gasket as well. Well if you guys don't mind please go check my build thread and take a look at the photos i posted of the Timing side and oil pan/pump area.

Would you recommend just pulling my oil pump and resealing it. Or fully replace the oil pump all together?
let me know what you guys think. And Im sorry not trying to take anything away from your thread. I like reading about all your updates.

It's been a while since i've had an update, it's just been so hot outside that i've not wanted to do anything!

I was finally able to get the fuel lines mounted up. The bigger u brackets worked PERFECTLY! With those mounted I decided I would finally throw the fuel pump into the tank and put that back on.

First I had to replace the fuel strainer on the pump. The one that was in it (I assume the original one) was nasty.

VvAjPod.jpg

Next it was time for the new fuel hanger gasket and nuts.

UjbnE70.jpg

ibCbb6U.jpg

Putting it in the car I was still surprised that the fuel lines were the perfect length!

I switched gears to get the rear main seal replaced. The one that came off the car motor that I bought didn't have an oil separator ring. I'm not sure what the downside to leaving this off is (more prone to leaking maybe?). I had one so it went in.

juqLkgA.jpg

In case you haven't done this before. The seal gets pressed in to the housing (I used a socket and a hammer to tap it in), then the seperator just kinda sits on top of the seal. Put the hole towards the bottom.

I decided to start working on a bracket that would hold my AFPR. I wasn't really sure where to put it so I just grabbed some metal and started bending.

7LGQaBo.jpg

I put the original clutch master on to see where I would have clearance. I think the brake reservoir area is going to be the best spot. Ill be getting a 3g brake master which has an integrated reservoir.

6STm57l.jpg

Then I grabbed one of the spare pieces that I used for the fuel brackets and started bending and drilling holes.

BNlyMq3.jpg

Lz2g1e4.jpg

Mounting this to the car the AFPR sticks up pretty high.

0m2XMFH.jpg

Time to lower the mounting holes!

cgsC2j9.jpg

cWkEnt6.jpg

This should be good.

Vp9S5Rs.jpg

I need to get another reel of Russell hose so that I can finish plumbing the fuel in the engine bay. I'll also need the 3g brake master, clutch fork, pivot ball, and throw out bearing before the motor can be remounted.

Here's a little teaser of what's to come...
