So I just got my girlfriends 1G running and the 16g turbo on it is definitely blown. The car puts out blue smoke and there was oil inside the housing when I pulled the intake off (there is no catch can or anything recirculating to the intake so its more than likely from the turbo) however the turbo makes a whining sound under boost.

My question is what usually causes the whining sound? I'm thinking about just rebuilding it yet I want to know if a basic rebuild kit such as this one http://turbolabofamerica.com/mhi-14b-16g-20g-turbo-rebuild-kit/ will work to fix it since there is no shaft play and the turbine wheel seems to be okay. Thanks.

Boost leak.

Go boost leak check the car, you'll find a leak.

No, it won't work.

The Turbo Lab "kit" uses 18mm thrust hardware, which requires the bearing housing to be machined to accept it. So, unless your bearing housing has already been machined/rebuilt in the past, chances are this kit will not work for you.

Find a kit with factory specs and you'll be fine.

Do you know of any good kits out there for a reasonable price?
The TraderGreg kits on eCrater are the accepted "affordable" parts kit for MHI TD05H turbos at roughly half the cost of OEM. You'll definitely want to re-use your OEM thrust plate if it's not worn...I've seen cases where the thrust plates included in the TraderGreg kits don't hold up that great- not sure if it's the material being used or what. If the thrust plate is worn and you want it to hold up like stock, just spend the money and get an OEM parts kit. :)
And what is the benefit from running larger thrust hardware?
On turbos that need it, improved protection against thrust wear caused by large rotating assemblies, high boost, or excessive turbine restriction. An Evo III 16G doesn't fit into this category for 99% of the people reading this right now. The downside is the larger washer requires machining the bearing housing a bit, and also requires moving the oil feed to the filter housing with the use of a restrictor because what was once adequate oil flow for the stock rebuild parts suddenly becomes insufficient when the surface area of the thrust washer grows and the plate gains an additional (and much larger) oiling hole.

Justin, where can an OEM parts kit be sourced?

The flat or super back is the compressor wheel. It's either flat or concave. And most of the time a regular kit is ok. It all depends on how bad a rebuild it needs and which parts need replacing. I don't remember off hand what the difference is sorry ;) I believe there's a list on gpop of what all comes in each kit.

I'm probably going to get a regular kit. The turbo doesn't have much or any shaft play, just bad seals so leaking oil to the intake and exhaust.

Ya pretty sure the reg kit has the bearings and seals. They also send you instructions on how to do the rebuild (gpop). But I would watch the videos and tutorials on here as well, in tech section. Ah here ya go this tells you which kit has what. ;) http://gpopshop.com/rebuild-kits/
