You guys leaving in the cams and popping the rockers off or pulling the cams/cam caps too, then bleeding the lifters before reassembly?

I've got a small 5ga compressor, I might be doing this with ear plugs in.

Echo. Pull the cams and rockers and lifters to get access. This is a good time to replace the valve seals too if they are suspect or have been in there for a while at all. Have assembly grease handy and a couple magnetic screw drivers for putting the keepers back in and plug up all the oil passages with towels or else you'll be pulling the pan...

With the blue point tool I just put the keepers in the retainer, set the retainer on the valve/valve spring and a quick tap of the 5lb hammer installs the retainer/keepers.

So when you remove the spring what holds the valve up, the piston? If so you can bend the valve.
This is only as a precaution, but if piston is at tdc, even if valve drops it is not going to bend it.
The same as changing stem seals.
The reason is sometimes when you put air into the cylinder the piston will backpedal.

Corey,

I just picked up this: http://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/team-xi-valve-spring-compressor.501396/

Cheap, gets the job done fast, and works AWESOME. I installed a set of Manley springs, retainers, and new valve seals. I probably did the entire job in an hour...Head off the car, though. It shouldn't be horrible with the head on.

You can use compressed air to hold the valve up. If your valve seals are worth a damn, they pretty much hold the valve in place, but I wouldn't rely on that alone.

That one looks very similar to the euroexport tool and is $25 less. I also just found this one. There's a demo video on YouTube. Just wonder if anyone has actually used it and if it is that easy. If so, it's even cheaper, snap on brand so lifetime warranty and would be much faster than a bolt on compressor. Would still work the same using compressed air to hold the valves. It might be fun to use on some dual valve springs too...

06APR2014 - Pontiac Heaven Test and Tune
Yea, you read that right. PONTIAC Heaven, who knew? Apparently I was the only one that read the fine print in their flyer because I was the only car there other than all the Pontiac's, I think I even confused tech when I pulled up with a tech card... Craziest Pontiac they've ever seen! LOL

1st pass. 11.92 @ 127.63mph (PB trap)
My 60' sucks, I'm dropping the clutch to fast and bogging. Feels terrible in the car and looks bad on film. The car keeps getting faster at the top of the track though so no complaints, just makes it that much more painful seeing a 127mph trap speed and NEVER getting under an 11.5 pass.
---> 1st pass 0406
2nd pass. 12.276 @ 126.46mph
Wow did I bog on that launch, I was really wanting to beat the brakes off that Trans Am too. Guy driving it was in his early 20's and fit the 'Merica Muscle' profile, he was expecting to embarrass me (which he did) but it wasn't because his car was faster, it was because I beat myself. RPM's dropped below 2k, launching @ 5.5k, and it felt like I almost stopped before the car recovered... DAMN was I reeling his slow ass Pontiac in on the top end though. Frustrated but at least I'm consistent.
3rd pass. 12.642 @ 123.61mph
I'm getting slower... ugh.
It's was in my head that if I slip my clutch too much, launching the car @ 5.5k and having NLTS set at 4.5k, that I'll just start popping/backfiring by inadvertantly activating NLTS because it had happened before. If the clutch pedal isn't completely released (at the top of it's throw) Link thinks I'm trying to shift and will activate NLTS while I'm trying to accelerate out of 1st, then I pop and backfire at 4.5k until I completely lift my foot off of the pedal.
Not being able to leave on that 12.6 pass I made a 4th pass, no video of it and no log either. All I've got is a time slip which is too bad since I finally ran a sub 2 second 60' (1.9 which is awful) and ran a new PB time. It was two-hundredths of a second faster than my old personal best, 11.65 @ 121mph, but still a PB is a PB. It only 4.5yrs to knock .02 seconds off my time and pick-up 5mph. :damn:

4th pass. 11.63 @ 126.05mph (PB ET)

ANYWAY! It WAS a successful day since I had two time slips, both with a personal best time and trap speed. Race season in AZ was coming to an end but I still had another track day ahead of me to try for that sub-11.5, then I'd figure out my rev limiter issue... In the mean time it was time to pull a few things out of my hat to fix the NLTS clutch cut (so I wasn't trying to dump the clutch) and maybe squeeze even more airflow from this tiny td05 turbo.

22APR2014 - Velocity Stack Headlight Mod
I was getting ready for another Test and Tune event on the 25th and still trying to hack this HTA68 to flow more. Even though I was having issues launching, both my NLTS issue (launching and going into clutch cut) as well as my valve float break-up if I hit the rev limiter, I was still trying before summer to hit that sub-11.5 pass.

I'm subscribed to the 14b Drag Race Discussion Thread, I know I've got a HTA68 but those guys push that turbo to the limit and know a lot more about these cars than I do. Using some of their advice, I thought I'd try picking up some airflow at the track installing a velocity stack and replace the K&N air filter. Here's the specific post I was referring to in the 14b thread ---> @SBStar Velocity Stack Upgrade

I bought the BLOX Racings 6" opening and a 4" neck, ran around $30, and a 4" 90* coupler so I could make the turn into the headlight opening. It wasn't long enough to reach outside the frame so I bought a 4" HVAC duct from Home Depot to push the VS out further in the opening. It worked out great for a <$50 setup that I threw together a few days before the last track event before summer hit, I was looking forward to seeing the results...

25APR2014 - Last Track Day Before Summer
Arizona's race season was coming to an end, racing between May and October is too hot, so this was my last shot to collect that <11.5 time slip and then over the summer I can fix the issues that were ailing my car.

I did some playing with my NLTS settings and realized that having my launch set to 5.5k and my NLTS @ 4.5k was causing the problems launching, it should be higher than my launch limit so if I slip the clutch it's not going into clutch cut. I don't know why I didn't think of it before but, I set my launch limit at 5250 and my NLTS at 6.5k which (in theory) should make it possible to get off the line slipping the clutch a bit.

I wanted to visualize cutting a low 11 so before heading to the track I put it on my window...

1st pass. 11.79 @ 121.62mph
Slipped the clutch too much and didn't launch very hard but the NLTS RPM changed proved that it worked, looking at my IDC's my injectors didn't cut off after I launched the car so I just have to be more aggressive letting the clutch go and next pass I should get the 11.49.
---> 1st pass log
2nd pass. NO TIME
Prior to making my second pass I did install the velocity stack and drop my launch limit from 5250 to 4750, unfortunately I didn't get to see what 3rd gear airflow or IAT's looked like but lowering my launch limit worked. I didn't get a time slip because I bumped the rev limiter coming off the line and once again, the car wasn't drivable until after I let it idle (reducing oil psi in the head). Previously I was really watching the tach and making sure to short shift it, trying not to hit the 8k rev limiter... Well, it was obvious I wasn't ready for a MFBA launch and the DR's did what they were supposed to and hooked up.
The car launched harder than I ever remember and I'm pretty sure instead of watching the tach I was staring at the headliner with a big ass grin on my face because my neck wasn't ready for it. The good news, I can launch the car 1 in 12 attempts... :f-u:
---> 2nd pass log

3rd pass. 11.66 @ 124.24mph
Velocity stack still on and two step still at 4750 the car still launched great, enough to scare me into lifting on the gas when I should have used NLTS. SMH. I swear! I also lowered my NLTS value and it bit me in the ass because, once again, I slipped the clutch too much and the car started going into NLTS while I was trying to launch (you can see the injectors shutoff at 5.5k).
One successful thing that came out of all this, look at that airflow in 3rd!! WHOA! 51.3lbs/m with that velocity stack and IAT's started cooler @ 82* and creeped to 91* which still wasn't ambient but still cooler than with a filter on the intake.

The 2014 race season I learned a lot about the car and what I needed to fix before I even consider making another pass.
  1. Rewire the NLTS clutch cut signal to the clutch starter switch.
  2. Install a CNC stage brake.
  3. Install a set of valve springs to prevent valve float when I bump the rev limiter.

Someday that 11.5 will be mine, until then back to the drawing board... :aha:

Here's a video of those 3 passes, watching the 2nd one it actually launched like it was AWD. It's just too bad I kissed the rev limiter before shifting.

I really hope you break into the tens by the time this all over.

Awesone build Corey. Read through it all in less than a day haha. Any updates?? Its not too hot here in Arizona just yet!
Thanks! Lots of updates, still have 2yrs of updates to catch up to present day. Just gotta find time to post them which is tough but someday I'll catch up.

Seriously just read every single post in this thread. That car is beautiful!

Glad to see the interest in updates to the car, I'll try to set aside a few hours this weekend and see if I have some updates to add.

Planning on doing something like this with the oem spoiler and wrap.

01OCT2009 - Photos of the CF Spoiler

Picked the spoiler up from the body shop and they couldn't have done a better job. They color matched the red and followed the lines of the spoiler just like I had asked, PERFECT!

Also wondering, why did you change back to the eclipse bumper corey? I always loved your car with the 2ga twisties, 2gb talon front end, the spoiler, and the eclipse rear. I was planning on being a copy cat, but with a color other than red.
