Finished all my finals!
My roommate has challenged me to have the car started by next Wednesday night, so ya'll should see some progress in the next couple days.

I DID IT!

I immediately came home from seeing my mom on Mothers Day and got to work.
For the 3 days I had I was out there at least 14 hours each day, and it was well worth it.

Ran into a few issues, like my fuel pump burnt out for some reason, so I had to go run and get one. But for the most part it was smooth sailing.
I'm absolutely stoked at how nice it came out. It still needs a few things done to complete the tuck, but I still think it looks incredible.
Here's a picture of the engine bay with everything in it:

Finally got to wash the car (what a satisfying wash it was, to remove 2+ years of dust)

Still need to address the few body panels that are messed up.

Here's a first start video! This was right after verifying oil pressure was good and nothing blew up! So this is it in it's rawest state.

Having some issues with the TPS, so i need to line that out and get it idling properly. But not bad for just enabling speed density and throwing in a guesstimate for fuel.

Looks great man, let us know how it feels with that subframe

Man Logan, that looks awesome! The engine bay it to die for. Great work!:applause:

Thanks man, I really put a ton of time into it!

I can't imagine it will be a pleasant ride LOL. It already vibrates a good bit just revving it

I ordered mine, then asked about the bushings, then I found out there were none LOL, should be a good time

So the annual Houston DSM meet is coming up in about 2 1/2 weeks, and I would love to be able to take the car. I'm doubtful that I'll have it in driving condition (and trust it to drive ~2 hours away) though.
I've always needed a time crunch to get myself extremely motivated, so I'm definitely going to try to get it together. I've put together a list of things I need to do to have it ready, and I'm sure I'll have to add things along the way. These were just off the top of my head.

  • Axle carrier bearing bolts, driver axle, and two new boot clamps.
  • Attach turbo feed/return coolant lines
  • Set toe closer to where it needs to be
  • Crossmember
  • Add coolant/burp
  • Set ignition timing
  • Run a few more heat cycles, change oil/check filter for debris
  • Wire in new TPS connector
  • Front/rear brakes and lines
  • Bleed brakes and clutch
  • Shorten throttle cable
  • Attach slave cyl (giving me trouble. seems like the rod is too long to attach it?)
  • Swap straight fuel fitting for a 90* (could potentially rub on the axle)
  • Find out why dash backlights and blinkers don't work.
  • Attach gas lid/hatch cables
  • BLT
  • Add check valve to brake booster hose (valves have been on backorder)
  • Mount seats/belts
  • Wire radiator fan and switch
  • Swap driver door hinges/bushings for good ones that I have acquired
  • Re-attach weather stripping with the clips I've gathered
  • Add ground straps to TB, intake, and starter bolt
  • Swap the wideband from my Cobra to the Talon
  • Fix the body panels that are sagging
  • Mount tcase/ fill with fluid
  • Mount ECU (missing bracket maybe?)
  • Mount new fuel pump switch (one i have is intermittent)
  • Alignment
  • Registration/Inspection
  • Tune
  • Fix any other problems that arise.
So clearly I've got my hands full. Got all the brakes finished, and the radiator fan/switch wired up today

Got the brakes and clutch bled, as well as the tcase mounted and torqued.
I had one of the flairs that I made on the new brake line slowly leaking.. So I gotta try that again. Its incredibly hard with the garbage Harbor Freight double flair tool. DONT BUY THAT JUNK!

Do you coat everything yourself or have it done? Awesome build!
Yes, I powder coated everything myself. I have a small setup and have been doing parts for people for some time now. I actually quit my tech position at my old shop and am doing powder coatings (and cerekoting firearms) full time now.
Very clean. Wish my bay was that nice! haha
Thanks man!
I'm trying to get my 1GB ready for the same meet! Where in Houston are you?
No way! Hope to see ya there! (I'll be in my cobra regardless if the Talon is ready) I'm about an hour north of Houston, going to school in Huntsville.

We are now AWD again! Cleaned up and re-greased the axles, got em in and torqued everything down.
Also got the toe set much more close to where it needs to be. Put the new 90* fitting on the fuel line so it clears the axle properly, and bolted up the crossmember. (apparently I lost the motor mount bolt -_-)
Going to try and back it out of the garage tomorrow. Will be the first time it's moved under it's own power!

Planning to fix the brake line, get the turbo coolant lines on (not easy with all the stuff bolted up) add coolant, burp, and get it up to temp tomorrow.

Man super happy for you, I know how much work it takes to get even to this point. Great job love the k member and lower control arms... super jelly ;)

Don't underestimate how hard it is to get the coolant hard lines on with everything else still bolted up. When I was bolting the whole turbo assembly up I completely forgot that auto 1g's came with a 13g, (motor was from an auto car and still had the return line attached) and they have a smaller sized coolant return line banjo. JNZ came through once again with a new line, and got it all bolted up.

Got the front motor mount bolted up and everything torqued down with some loctite (including the other three), cause this thing's gonna vibrate pretty bad.

Wow what a great day! Drove the car in and out of the garage, and let it run for a while and get nice and hot.. This is the first time the car has moved under it's own power since I've had it. Figured out a strange problem I was having.
The previous times I've fired up the car, I was really rushed checking out things; making sure it wasn't going to blow up.. verifying sensors are reading correctly.. checking for leaks.. not letting it get too hot because I didn't have coolant in it yet.. ya know, typical first start things.
Well between that and never owning a cammed car, I had no idea it was only running on three cylinders. It seemed like it was way more choppy than it should have been, especially when i revved it slightly. I just hadn't had it running long enough to investigate.

The first two times I had started the car it fired up immediately. Surprisingly fast honestly.
Third time I started it, it took a decent amount of tries to get it to fire off. Well today it wouldn't start for anything. I wasn't sure what could have happened, cause everything I've done since then was just mechanical stuff like coolant lines, and transfer cases. Pulled the plugs, cleaned them up and checked gap.. all was fine. One of the spark plug wires was not making good contact inside the coil. I just so happened to pull that one and a friend noticed spark coming out of the coil. So I temporarily got it to make a good connection, and it fired right up no problem. Not sure why that would keep it from starting. Maybe it was grounding out or something? Who knows. It works now.

So now I gotta add a wire set to the list. But luckily it was just a minor problem.

Anyway, the car sounds and feels SO much more healthy now that it is running on all 4 LOL.

Here's a nice choppy idle vid

And a few revs. I still need to dial in the idle and properly tension the throttle cable, so it idles high after i touch the pedal.

Still no tune or anything, so it's not perfect.

Update!

Been a busy summer. I'm about to gone for another 2 weeks, but I got a good bit done while I was home.

Wen't to the Houston DSM meetup and met a bunch of great people, buddy got a cool rolling shot of my daily
C09DDE64-D80E-431B-B8F8-9A0FF08CD03F_zps9j0ahcs5.jpg

Anyways, progress is as follows:

Got the wideband 100% wired up and logging correctly, and simulating narrowband.

Got the front tube crossmember and motor mount bolted up. Nice and solid.

New plastic bushing for the shifter. These are the pieces nobody should ever have to replace, but I'm an idiot and powder coated my whole shifter assembly not thinking there was anything meltable. So it's all rebuilt and looking good. Solid mounting bushings went in as well. Gonna have to pull them out again once I add carpet, but it's going to look great.

Pulled the fuel pump and replaced the AN fitting and section of hose that connects to the bulkhead. I didn't have the correct size fitting for it at the time, and made due by forcing 3/8 hose on a -8 fitting LOL. I knew it was likely to rupture so I went ahead and fixed it.

Throttle body shaft seals, and biss screw/seal. Went back with IAC, but will have to extend the wires to make it reach again. Hopefully this helps with idle.. At the cost of uglying up my bay.

C384352E-52AD-4CDA-951E-F43A63AE0303_zpszwzdzjef.jpg

Apparently the vrsf throttle body elbow isn't made all that well anymore. It was hitting my idle position sensor base on the throttle body, not allowing it to fully seat correctly. Ground it down and it's nice and sealed now.

Boost leak test.. found a hole in the wastegate line, and something else leaking by the turbo area. Only starts around 15psi, after that it leaks pretty quick. Waiting on a buddy to hold the air on it while I search. BOV leaks slightly too :/

Started on the body panels. Tons of double sided tape everywhere. Takes forever to peel off, but almost finished.. I'll get them put back on soon. Only one left to fix is the center tail light piece, around where the lock cylinder is. (Kill switch in my case)

Got one of the seats bolted in, and was checking the bracket fitment, when I stumbled upon how bad they fit. I'll have to chop the rear mounts and weld some new ones, at least on the driver seat. Haven't checked the passenger yet.
First time I've sat in the car in the three years I've owned it!

80F94E12-4B82-470C-BDAA-266E9AEE1EF5_zpsxvagsipl.jpg

Finally managed to get a timing light, and of course it doesn't work.
So I'll be ordering one soon, and hopefully that will fix how choppy the car is. I've never had a car with such aggressive cams, but I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be really choppy up to about 3k rpms.

Did the oil change after 3 or 4 full heat cycles, and zero metal shavings. :thumb:

Here's a better shot at the sheet metal panels for the interior. I was planning on just using these, however I've been watching a lot about how to make carbon fiber parts at home, and I think it would be pretty cool to replicate these in carbon. These panels can easily be used as molds, so the hard part is done. We'll see.. It may be too expensive to buy all the rolls of twill.

Lastly, I successfully drove the car down the road in front of the house. Suspension wise, everything was tight, no weird noised, pops, clunks.. nothing! Engine did fine, still barely has a tune on it, so it's expected to not be perfect. Overall it's pretty stout. 11/10 would drive again

It was made by Joshua Callahan out of Pennsylvania i believe. He's primarily on Facebook. Very, very nice guy but his customer service is extremely lacking. He's just overwhelmed by the work he's got I think. I'm still waiting on the tubular crossmember with the front motor mount.

Do you know if Joshua Callahan make 2g front subframes?

Thanks

I really dig the color
Thanks man, it's pretty unique.
I wish I had my engine bay ( road racing ) that uncluttered. But Im having al sort of wiring issues, so maybe time to tackle a complete rewire...
It definitely makes things WAY easier to work on. You can get the starter out in 2 minutes, on the side of the road if you needed to LOL. Only thing that sucks is the wiring. Take your time and think about removal when planning your routing. Try to make it as easy as possible to remove, so you don't hate yourself in the future

I think so, but I couldn't tell you for sure. I really like his products but I wouldn't recommend him. Customer service is god awful.

No pictures to upload at the moment because I'm sitting in class.. (speaking of which, they have been absolutely brutal, hence my lack of updates.)
But yesterday was a great day! Got a few glitches with the TB fixed, IAC wiring extended and running properly, seat brackets fitted and re-welded, turn signals and gauge cluster problems fixed and working properly. Got a new Tial BOV and powder coated it black to match everything else. Had a friend come out and get the base tune set much closer to where it needs to be. Turns out when I tried to flash the DA tables back to stock, it didn't work. In my inexperience, I completely overlooked it. So it was completely fubar which caused it to barely run. Never drove it like that, just idled.. (barely)
Now that it's got a proper base map, drove it around the neighborhood a couple times, and everything seems to work great! Feels very healthy. No stalls, idle surge.. nothing. It'll definitely take getting used to though, with all the solid mountings, and cams, and everything that makes it not so friendly to drive.
Going to head out and catch an alignment and get it inspected today, as well as fix a few more minor issues. Then I'll be taking it to it's first meet tonight

He does make 2g front and rear subframes. I have one of his rears and I had to modify where the diff bolts up for it to fit right. I think its luck of the draw if his products turn out the way they should. Some people have had good luck some people(my friend Matt Kruger) has now been sent 2 front subframes for his 1g and neither of them fit. BTW, nice build looks so clean!

I got lucky, mine was #10/10 so he had made the revisions prior to mine being built. I really want a rear subframe as well, but I just don't think I can order from him again.
