hello, my bore is stock at 85mm and I'm looking at getting the felpro mls head gasket but it only comes in a 87 mm bore size. can i still use this head gasket

thanks

ill be on e85 and prob run well over 20 pounds.. I'm new to this so is this not a good one ill also run the l19 head studs

You have mentioned you had headwork done in previous (recent) posts. You have not, however, mentioned if the block was also resurfaced. If you have not had the block resurfaced to an RA finish fine enough to use for an mls, you should stick with a composite. Cometic specifies an RA 50 minimum.

oh yea sorry the block has been resurfaced as well, would you recommend composite still or go with mls.

Yea I asked them and they said I can run a mls head gasket are cometic good. Thanks

If you're only doing 20psi, run composite stock gasket and standard arp studs.

30+psi use MLS gasket (felpro permatorque or OEM) with surfaces done correctly

35+ psi switch to L19 studs

40+ psi, head inserts, felpro head gasket only, 120ft lbs

Composites have been in the 30's with good head studs. Rather have an HG go than the motor.

+1

Head gaskets are cheap. Heads, blocks, rotating parts, and machine work are not.

I'd comfortably run a composite gasket (Felpro or OEM) up to the mid 30psi range with ARP hardware.

I have ran 30-35psi on $35 composite gaskets for years. Cylinder pressures are what's that important, not +/-5psi of boost. I have a head and blockbeing built by curt brown right now...and guess what's going on that motor...that's right, composite. If something goes wrong in the tune. I'd rather lose a $35 head gasket than a $5000 motor.

Ok now let me ask you this question im at a standard bore of 85 and they make the felpro in 87 will this head gasket work

I understand using the head gasket as a fuse but to be honest, if you rely on the head gasket as a fuse if something isn't right or goes wrong, stop tuning or seeks new tuner.
So what if you get some bad gas or the knock sensor goes out or some other unforeseen circumstance comes up. Bye bye engine. Has nothing to do with the tune sometimes sh*t happens. At the end of the day I'm not the one who would have to pay for it so you can take it or leave it but the composite will hold up just fine and keep your engine safer and is significantly cheaper and has a better chance to seal. I don't see why you would go with anything but the OEM composite with your bore and goals.

If you get bad gas, you would see knock, tune would suffer immediately, would ping and hesitate etc. if you stay in it, then you deserve to have your motor blown. If your knock sensor dies, that shouldn't matter. If a car is tuned correctly, you don't need a knock sensor. It's just a safety to have one and usually gives false knock sensor readings all the time. I have my knock sensor shut off and use all kinds of different fuel on an MLS head gasket and have never melted a piston. Then again I'm always monitoring my car and logging and before racing I check a log to make sure car is healthy.

Using a head gasket as an idea as a fuse isn't a bad idea but at the same time, it kind of is as it's probably protecting bad habits. If you get detonation enough to blow out a composite head gasket, then at that point you've pounded down on the top bearing and caused marks on a piston.

LOL. OK.

Ok I'm going to go with the felpro mls and just have one question I'm at standard bore of 85 and the felpro only comes in 87 will this be ok or should I go with the oem mls that's an 86 and says will work with 85. Thanks

felpro is one of the best head gaskets I have use when it comes to sealing, but you have to be careful it has very low tolerance to detonation which is not a bad thing because it act as a fuse it detonation get out of control to protects the pistons from damage. Good choice just watch your tune!!

Sounds good would you stay with the felpro or the oem mls

Thanks

Well it depend really on how far you are trying to go, we say yeah I am just gong to go to this level and we build our car to this level. The problem comes in when you get use to this level and want to step it up then all the decisions we made on the current setup i no longer valid. If you stick with a set goal then oem and felpro will be fine trust me. Just my $.02:thumb:
